  • Try to limit added sugars (cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup, agave, etc.) as much as possible. The American Heart Association recommends women limit them to 25 grams per day and men to 36 grams per day.
Wondering how much sugar is too much sugar? Registered Dietitian Whitney English explains that it all depends on which type of sugar you're consuming, natural or added.
-Natural sugar is sugar that naturally occurs in food, like fruits, vegetables, and dairy. These sugars aren’t associated with health risks, so there’s no need to limit them.
-Added sugar is sugar that’s added to food during processing. This includes cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup, brown sugar, agave, honey, maple syrup, molasses, and more. Added sugars are associated with type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity, and tooth decay, so limiting them is a good idea.
    The American Heart Association recommends:
-Women limit added sugars to about 100 calories per day (25 grams or about six teaspoons).
-Men limit added sugars to about 150 calories per day (36 grams or about nine teaspoons).
Keep in mind: your body doesn’t need any added sugars to function healthily, so you can skip them altogether if you want. Want to reduce them without obsessing about it? Eat whole, unprocessed foods as often as possible and when you choose to have a treat with added sugar, enjoy it!
