I'm a keyboards muso of some 60 years. I dropped on these two supreme players three years ago. Domi taught me how to play again. I renewed my scales and arpeggios and got them up to speed. Thanks to Domi, my skills have been reborn.
It's like Drum and Bass, chopped + Chick Corea + Cory Henry + J Dilla + Vince Guaraldi (Peanuts cartoons) on Adderall. Incredible.

Good catches. In the NPR Tiny Desk video, I was thinking Chick and RTF early to mid 70's. But I watched another video of them in an apartment loft, and at about a dozen minutes in, I heard her quote the theme from Bill Evans' 1961 'Nardis'.

Domi's base line on the keys along with the melody line makes her more than two people playing in sync. JD has it all. They are locked in. Doesn't get much better improv than this.
The music is like being on an acid trip. I love it!

Regardless of what planet they come, it's so amazing to see that the best parts jazz fusion and hyper-complex jungle - style drumming are in such good hands with these kids... on a compositional level (harmonic / formal / melodic) they are also virtuosi. So yeah, full package right of the bat... thanks for the vid and the perspective.

These two always blow my mind! Their talent, technique, skill level and style insight is far beyond their years. Listening to them and watching them play always affects me emotionally .... it is so profound ...

Ive listened to groove collective and many in this genre over the years... its amazing what these two are doing... like he said you get lost in what theyre doing...
I'm 60 and have played drums for thirty years. I've never heard this drumstyle before, JD has invented a completely new style of drumming.
You should check out Chris Dave, the drummer for Robert Glasper Experiment.
These sorts of drum patterns have been around in electronic music since the early 1990's.
Johan, this style exists since some time... originally samples (in the 80s), Jojo Mayer has been pushing it a lot since almost 20 years now. Johnny Raab is also there, and many other great drummers. What imho makes it unique is the combination with Domi's harmonically complex yet so musical keyboards, since Drum 'n Bass alone is much simpler.
In combination they are exceptional abd unique. And that with their age!

its as if some took a standard jazz track, cut it up in an MPC and smashed all the bits back together doubled timed the drum loops then gave the track to these teens to learn .,.,.. and they did ,,,,

Jose Molina says that all the time about stretching your fingers. If you're able to do more with your right hand on the treble side of things, makes creating complex chords and progressions a lot easier.
