We seriosuly need a remake of the first two wing commander games. Those images are gorgeous 😢.
The Broadsword... good memories! 🤩
I always prefered either the Sabre or Thunderbolds. Still when heavy firepower was needed the Broadsword was your weapon of choice.
Nope...fancy weps are no replacement for 3 turrets and heavy Armor.
The sabre might punch through jalheki groups, but only the broadsword will bring you back home alive.
I’m kinda of partial to the Crossbow
It was slow, but the many turrets also kept me happy it was like spraying destruction in all directions.
I think it was also useful when you were turning away from a target and still fire at it
I do feel the Saber is a better torpedo delivery platform. Lock on, afterburn in, release closer to the enemy capship than recommended. Less chance of the projectile being shot down. The Broadsword holds up better against Flak, but future bombers after its limited run replacement the Crossbow had afterburners...
the actual mad-lad got this out before the new year, hot damn xD
I gave up an end of the year party yesterday for this.🤫
I am not sure the broadsword is a coffin with guns or tank but it was a damn cool design
Great narration as always, and your VFX are getting increasingly better with each new video! Happy New Year dude!
Happy New Year to you too Chris!
One of my top favorites in WC2. The switching to the turrets was so much fun and the triple mass drivers just shred through Kilrah's finest fighters.
I need to watch a playthrough of this game at some point.
Broadsword is a great ship
Ah the Nephilim, love the organic; almost coral ship designs & the creature designs themselves. Although only seen on one cutscene if I recall were refreshingly none humanoid. Yeah I'm still angry that EA Pulled the plug on the Nephilim trillogy...
Yet ported Prophecy to the God damn Game Boy Advance 8 years after release.
Because why not
Slightly off topic, sorry. It's great to see more content from you Mac ^_^
I only ended the WC series on the fourth game, so I never learned much about them. Prophecy just felt... off in my opinion.
They were supposed to be called Skeltek or so anyway. They completely messed up the background. Sadly.
I remember the few missions that we got to fly this beast in Wing Commander 2, I would switch to third-person camera when surrounded by Kilrathi fighters. The three neutron turrets would automatically fire on enemies within range while I try to dodge incoming fire. Quite often, this was more effective at taking out large numbers of Kilrathi than in first-person cockpit view where you only controlled the forward guns. Loved this ship.
Wow this lore series is awesome!
Nice. It's like the A-10 but futuristic. Lol
Dude your channel is so damn good. I have a ton of these books I found at a thrift store and I love them. I'm missing like 3 or 4 of the whole collection. So thank you for bringing these craft to life. Happy New Years and always check six.
Happy New Years to you too Warhawk!
@@MacsLore thank you Mac's Lore. You do the same and here's to 2023 just blowing up for you in subscriber's numbers.
It's intended to be a B-17, but futuristic! :)
@@WingCommanderCIC now that makes it even better! Love the B-17.
Amazing work and great voiceover work as well.
The Longbow looks like a huge step backwards.
It could ram things damn well. But don't try turning in it.
I am a big fan of the Privateer game I love my centurion.
I was actually gonna request a ships of privateer video. Honestly these are so atmospheric I listen to them while I do paperwork and they keep me sane haha
One of my fondest memories of Wing Commander was making my name Damnit "Damnit" Damnit. That way, whenever someone would get mad at me in the game, they'd say, "Damn it, Damnit!"
Wow. Just found you. Love wing commander. Great channel
The quality of your videos are so well done.
Lovely old bird. Happy new year.
Happy New Year to you Clyde!
Short and sweet, always looking forward to more WC lore. Do keep it coming, the more the better.
So good, awesome job mate!! Many a capital ship destroyed with this beast!!!💪💪
You're obviously an AUSSIE!
God if there was ever a franchise in need of a remaster and resurrection..
Oh I still remember the Broadsword from the “Wing Commander Academy” cartoon.
Your history explanations are spot on!
Well, this is it. My favorite ship from WC 2. Yes, she's slow, but she's got teeth. All over her, as the video shows. With those three turrets you could switch over to on the fly, no light fighter could sneak up on me. And you were the bane of any capship. After this, the Longbow just didn't entirely measure up for me, even though I, as a general rule, prefer flying heavy fighters and bombers in flight-sims, as opposed to light and medium fighters.
Solo you could be in trouble, but with several flying formation you have a lot of supporting cover fire which eats up enemy interceptors.
Back in WC2 the AI will actually man the turrets for you, you will not need to visit a turret for anything except tractor beams. After all, as part of a working military, your ship must always be fully crewed, and the crew complement of a Broadsword is 4 (1 + 3 gunner). This feature was not present in Privateer, making turrets less useful than they should have been.
@@GreatChicken2 Yes, but the AI fired rather infrequently, as I remember. It was more fun for me to take control of the turrets myself.
Broadsword rear terret is always my triumph card.
ps. Fly slow then wait for them to line up on my 6 . ^_^
i always wondered if the gunnery crew was just left to die if you ejected in WC2
Hell yea, happy new year mac
Happy New Year to you Iggy!
My fav was the wasp 🐝
One important and interesting game that most people overlook in the Wing commander series is Wing commander Armada. Particularly the manual "Voices of War" contains captains logs of the first contact between the Kilrathi and the Terran's and explains how the war started. in addition in a campaign if you tell it to actually allow you to fight the combat instead of just going by the odds it is the only game in the wing commander series that lest you pilot Kilrathi ships aside a few missions in SM2. in addition it was the first introduction of the Arrow (one of my favorite fighters in the series), the reaper cannon, and some other control features ("autoslide" button ) that were included in Wing commander 3. Its also the only canon Wing commander game where you can fly a Gladius. but also there were some new ships and weapons' that didn't make it into wing commander 3 that are also very interesting. and by the way its multi player mode is a lot of fun to use if you want some WC bragging rights against someone who claims to be better at the game than you :)
I loved the one... Uh Morningstar or so? Very fast thin wide winged fighter with good guns.
Also the flak you got in carrier attacks in Armada were just brutal.
The only worse damage I remember from the whole series was being one-shotted by crossfire from two destroyers in wc1 or wc2.
Note, that antimatter guns also penetrated phase shields.
(and occassionally stray pilots...}
Can you cover the alliance coalition war from the Starlancer game
i love the broadsword
I'm old enough to remember wing commander so this brings back happy memories of my childhood.
Love wing commander stuff.
Shame the movie was abysmal..
Will you be doing the Concordia class, and Midway class?
Happy new year mac 🎉😊👍
Wooow!!
Just epic!! Not to mention your amazing narration and ability to well convert pixellated designs from wc2 into well defined VFX!
Well done Mac's lore!! You are one of those rarities left who still revels in good lore!
Really was looking fwd to this!
May your tribe grow!👏👏👏👏
Lol, thanks. I wish I could take credit for the models, but they are very much the work of Hangar B Productions. Its because of them allowing Wing Commander fans to use their models that my videos look the way they do.
@@MacsLore
Either ways,
The effort put in by you in searching out and scripting a narration fitting lore is commendable.
Hope that I also get to see your narration on the crossbow and Morningstar from wc2.
The classics- ferret, epee, sabre, broadsword, rapier from wc2 and the crossbow and the tac nuke capable Morningstar are waay better than any designs origin made after wc2..
I loved the design of this ship since I first saw the animated series. I was very disappointed when I finally got to play a game that featured it as it was so slow. Eventually came around a little, but I still hate some of the dogfight-heavy missions in one but love the look of the fighter.
Cool video.
Good to see you again how is the heavy gear lore going for you
Not to be confused with the Halo universe's UNSC space fighter mass produced in the post-Human-Covenant War era, this craft.
Looks amazing. I am curious why you said the Gothri was the first torp bomber, rather than the Grikath (Klavs has a model for that). I would also, if it's not too late for the final video mention the fact that a torpedo's lock time is a danger, so the turrets have their jobs cut out for them. My understanding was that sabres/rapiers/swords were deployed in other engagements, just not on the victory. Any truth to that?
As always, this is a work of beauty. Thanks Mac!
My understanding was that the Grikath was primarily designed as a Heavy Fighter that could load a Torpedo or two, like the Sabre. But at the end of the day it was never specifically labelled as a Bomber. While the Gothri has been called a Heavy Fighter, it's also been called a bomber as well. So for me it came down to siding with the ship that did have the name bomber attached to it, over the one that didn't.
About torpedo lock times...yeah. That was an unintentional omission on my part.
Lastly, about the WC2 fighters, I don't think it's been explicitly said, but if the WC4 novel (I know it's canon is *Very* dubious) had the UBW using that era of fighters, then I would think they did use them in the war. If there was any other mention of them anywhere else, I'm unable to remember.
@@MacsLore You got it! I forget which book, but it was a clear way to have the fan favorite ships still in circulation. :)
Thanks for the clarification of Grikath vs Gothri!
At this point are you still using FRED (with WC Dark Saga in this case) for these scenes or something like blender?
Still, really like your content and have begun the Earth\Star Siege playlist.
Mainly just for the Freespace stuff specifically. I've since mostly moved onto Blender for the 3d stuff as its easier for me to bring in whatever assets I need easily for a video.
@@MacsLore thanks for the reply. It's great to hear you have enhanced your workflow. I keep hearing good things about blender.
Hope your skills continue to grow here and in non-youtube!
I preferred the heavy fighters personally. As far as WCII bombers I’d rather have the Crossbow
it feel like you are talking about a10C...
How come spaceships have a maximum velocity? I can understand maximum acceleration, but velocity?
That's Wing Commander!
No, really. The manuals all give every ship a max velocity value, with the games following suit. In my own headcanon I just say it's a quirk of how space combat in the WC universe works.
Look at it this way. A fighter has a finite fuel and the max speed is dictated by how much retro fire required to arrest that forward motion a return to the carrier, the engagement or escourt. Think of it as a limiter
I think a better explanation is that the game designers did not think it through, or did and didn't care. Still a great game.
I remember people buying PCs just so they could play Wing Commander.
@@waynem4791 actually I think they simply chose WW2 fighter dynamics over real physics because most people understand how planes fly.
Clearly they knew how fast kilometers per second was. The Space Shuttle is 7 kps. 450 kps is a million miles per hour and on afterburner the fighters are hitting a quarter light speed. That would mean earth to the sun in 32 minutes and 45 minutes to the Asteroid belts. Wing commander maps may lack Orbital dynamics and traditional solar system features but the distances shown seem very purposeful to me. .
This is the minimum speed to have a spacefaring interstellar civilization with out FTL engines.
I survive more fights with Broadswords than woth Sabres, for some reason.
