    Let's talk boat transducers. We recently upgraded to the new DST810 Smart Multisensor which takes the Depth, Speed-Through-Water, and Temperature capabilities of the original DST800, adds a new attitude sensor and bluetooth.
    In this video, we unbox the new transducer, go over setup and calibration with the Airmar Cast App, and provide a review of how it works during a 1,000nm passage from Virginia down to the Bahamas!

    According to an Airmar install video, the black seal is actually mean for retrofitting the new transducer to the older thru-hull fitting (if you already have one in place).

    We replaced our DST-800 with an 810 a couple of years ago after we were hit by lightning and the transducer quit working (along with just about everything else electronic on the boat.)
    The new app is nice and well-appreciated due to the pain of trying to set offsets on multiple displays. Calibrating the data source only once is better.
    The new water wheel seems to foul a lot quicker and easier than the old style. That's a pain but the excellent water stopper gate makes pulling the transducer for cleaning super easy and low stress. Changing the transducer creates about a half quart of.water inside the boat. We rarely pull or.change ours until the wheel is fouled or we are hauling out. Installing the plug before hauling out is a good idea. Definitely make sure there is no water in there above the O-ring(s) if you expect freezing temperatures as any moisture in there could freeze and damage the plastic thru-hull.
    On our transducer the water temp stopped working almost immediately but we never used it anyhow.

    Love my Dst810, very easy to use and calibrate, much easier than anything else I have tried.

    Nice, we just bought this for Elysium along with a whole bunch of other new electronics, so the timing of this was perfect. Thanks!

    So many people give advice after a few months of sailing. I remind myself that you guys have circumnavigated already and likely know what your talking about

      I really appreciate you saying that. We still feel a touch of imposter syndrome every once in a while, but we remind ourselves that some of our lessons along the way others will find useful.

    Thanks for the video. I just received my DST 810. I applied marine grease to the o-rings and was trying the fitting of the plug and transducer in the housing and it is so tight that I can barely remove them by hand. Did you experience the same? Are those easier to remove once the boat is in the water? Thanks.

    So to get a dst810 ‘for Garmin’ simply means that it comes with Garmin compatible connections?

    I recently replaced an old DST800 with the new DST810, though I notice mine has the Gen2 Paddle wheel as standard. It is a wider wheel and does not spin as freely on the axle as the older type as in your video. It would be nice to se a review of the unit with the new Gen2 paddle wheel and the differences between them. I suspect they are fouled more quickly.

    Nice video thank you! I will add this transducer to my long keel yacht, it has some inclination under the waterline of course. Is it possible to set the transducer by software to compensate this inclination? What’s the available range?

      If you buy the B&G Triton package through Defender you get this transducer, a great wind anemometer, two Triton displays, a smart GPS/rate-compass puck, and a complete backbone NMEA-2K wiring package.
      It's about $1800 but is a super deal because if you bought it all separately it would be easily twice that. The Triton displays are excellent and are about the only decent things B&G sells IMHO. All the other stuff in the package, like thr DST-810 is manufactured by third parties.

    Great DST-810 review! Does changing the temperature units from C to F on the Cast app change what is sent over the NMEA 2000 bus? Asking to see if it is changed there, whether chart plotters and software like OpenCPN need to do any unit conversion.

    Thanks! I'm curious if you considered the UDST800 that doesn't have a paddle wheel. Would save you from pulling up the floor and cleaning the paddle wheel every time it gets fouled.

    • @geoffthefarmer
      @geoffthefarmer Před 2 lety

      I would be interested in that. Having to clean the paddle wheel all the time is a pain.

      I’ve got the 800. Didn’t want a paddle wheel again. It works great

    • @OutChasingStars
      @OutChasingStars  Před 2 lety +1

      We have a few friends who've tried the UDST800 and they've been happy with them so far. They're also quite a bit more expensive than either the DST800 or DST810 and require some additional hardware installation.
      Of all the problems on a boat, cleaning the paddle wheel has been a relatively minor issue. At least, it hasn't bothered us enough to go the full ultrasonic route... yet. haha

    Hi, thanks for the information and clear explanation. I replaced my DST800 with DST810. But we are having problem. Our instrument which is ST70 is not recognising the transducer. The technician said that we have to upgrade the instrument as well which is quite expensive. Is thrte any way to over come this problem? Or can I monitor the data on my tablet thru app?

    Location - What would debth, temperature or waterspeed have to do with the location ? I'm always skeptical about such options and do not allow them, as I think they are not used for calibration, rather for statistics...

    We have installed an airmar ust800 transducer and have Raymarine axiom system with I70s. We can’t get accurate readings and are told by airmar that we need to calibrate it with a garmin. Which is ridiculous. How can we get this to work correctly?

  • @cncarstens
    @cncarstens Před 2 lety

    Nice... I recently purchased and installed a new paddlewheel but will look at this. Have you hooked up any additional engine sensor info to your Raymarine MFD?

    • @OutChasingStars
      @OutChasingStars  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes actually! We have 2 Yacht Devices YDEG-04 (www.yachtd.com/products/engine_gateway.html) engine gateways hooked into our MFD. It was an easier way to monitor coolant temp then adding additional gauges and gives us lots more info as well!

  • @geno92308
    @geno92308 Před 2 lety

    Especially in the Bahamas, would a forward facing sonar be of much use ?
    I suppose the speed of the boat would need to be minimized and in the case of a cat, both motors would need to run near idle to ensure adequate maneuverability should a hazard be detected.

  • @davewright7254
    @davewright7254 Před rokem

    Is the app needed for calibration of anything if it's wired into the network going to the chart plotter or is it just a gee wiz thing and one more way to see the data?

    • @OutChasingStars
      @OutChasingStars  Před rokem

      The app does provide significantly more calibration options than we can do through the chart plotter.

    • @OutChasingStars

      The DST810 will definitely fit in the DST800 thruhull. We made the swap without replacing our thruhull.

  • @Cptnbond
    @Cptnbond Před 2 lety +1

    Thanks for the information. It looks like they sent you a pre-production prototype and software that was not even tested. I understand that Airmar is eager to get the new products to the market. But, it kind of gives a foul smell of the company culture with obviously no quality control for units sent for review.

    • @OutChasingStars
      @OutChasingStars  Před 2 lety

      Airmar didn't mention anything about our first transducer being a pre-production prototype so we can't speak to that. It's not the first time we've had issues with equipment we've bought for the boat, but to Airmar's credit, they were extremely quick to rectify the issue.
      As for the software, the units issue is the only one we came across in our testing. And compared to most other marine industry apps/equipment that we've used, that's surprisingly good.
