  • Another episode in my short, and somewhat intermittent, series showing off the best of the local traders and produce to be found in and around the city of Stoke-on-Trent.
    Today, it's the turn of Parker's Butchers, Weston Road, Meir, Stoke-on-Trent.

    My thoughts :
    For many years now, I've been far from convinced by the current prevailing world view that globalisation and overly dominant corporations are always beneficial to the average man in the street. By all accounts we, as a society, are heading for tough times with the cost of living crisis, inflated fuel prices, war in Europe, the list goes on.
    It's even more vital today that we continue to support our local economy. Once your local butcher, baker and candlestick maker is pushed out of the economy by the big boys, we are all the poorer for it.
    What happens when another container ship gets stuck in the canal or the next war breaks out denying us of wheat, flour, gas... water?
    If we fail to continue to support our local trades, they won't be there to take up the slack and provide the vital life giving supplies we need to exist.
    Just a thought.

    I supplied their chicken for many years, always a quality establishment. Nice to see Rich and Terry are still there and Graham still fully in command.

    To the left of what used to be the Tiger Moth pub on Sandon Road in Meir, now the One Stop, is a row of small flats in a converted bungalow at the top of a long drive and front garden. To the right of the building there’s a small L-shaped bit. My grandparents kept a little shop there in the 60s and 70s, and lived in the whole bungalow, which had a back garden then, with old farm buildings behind. Nana stood at the front with the sweets and cigs, and Gaga was at the back at a counter with meat and cheese. (He used to take me with him to a wholesale place in Stoke for supplies, can still smell the place, and to the countryside for eggs and dairy). Some local ladies in macs and headscarves with string bags would come in to help, and made elevenses. My brothers and I earned ‘rations’ - sweets after tea - by stacking shelves etc.

      @@northstaffscountrywalks Plan on doing it all over time. I've got a great story about walking "up Hanley Duck" with Nan & Grandad as a young boy back in the early 70's and watching the barges being loaded with pottery while standing on the bridge on Eastwood Road... Happy memories.

    Remember when that was Arthur's store we had to learn how to shop for our cookery lesson at Meir secondary school in the 1948 .

      A bit before my time Pat but great to hear from you and know you have fond memories of the place. We did "Home Economics" when I was at Colclough Road under Miss Nutall around 1978/9. Unfortunately, today, things are very different. I remember my niece asking for help with some shopping when she did the same course a couple of decades later. She was told to buy a pot of jam and some ready made pastry... when did we stop teaching our kids how to cook? By my reckoning, it must have been 20 years ago and look where it's gotten us!
      Thanks for the comment, good luck.

    Tesco almost destroyed Longton’s shops. Luckily it seems to be picking up. The Town centre was busy at the weekend, and I recommend the new coffee shop ;)

      I agree C... it struck me just how much more inviting Longton was just a few week back while walking across the precinct for my eye appointment at Royals; another independent I would choose over the big nationals. I diffidently shouldn't have gone to Spec-savers 🥸

    My family is from the Meir…what a mess the A50 made of destroying the Meir. Mum was from laburnum place, dad from South Walk, later Pinewood Crescent and Brookwood Drive. Many memories of Meir.

    • @Bloke-in-Stoke
      @Bloke-in-Stoke  Před rokem +2

      Hi Jane and thanks for the comment. I was born and bred in Weston Coyney so attended Pinewood Crescent Primary School back in the 1970's and my walk in each morning was down Brookwood Drive. Some really happy memories of that place but sadly, like both Colclough Road and Box Lane high schools, they have all been erased.
      The trauma of building the A50 was indeed a major blow to the heart of the Meir, one it will never fully recover from. Of course it's decline isn't entirely due to the road. Like the vast majority of town centers today, it's decline is much more to do with economic and political reasons that seem to have been stacked against us since the end of the 70's.
      On the up side, I can't imagine what King Street, the old A50, would be like under the pressure of today's traffic volumes. Meir, Longton and Fenton were gridlocked before the new A50 dual carriageway replacement was installed. Today, the new road is tail-to-tail in both lanes during rush hour from Blythe Bridge, all the way to the Sideway junction with the A500!
      Happily, I very rarely need to use the road these days but do feel for all those that do.
      Cheers

    I used to always shop at this butchers before moving out the area. It was lobby time! The perk was if some cooked meat had just come out the oven. A meaty bap put lobby on hold, but not for long.😊

    I applaud your devotion to the little guys and local shops. Seeing all those pies, pork,snake and pigmy etc made me wonder what happened to Browns pies from Stoke market? I'm an ex-pat Fenton-ite brought up on a diet of Browns pies and Heron Cross oatcakes. I can almost taste em 😁😁

    • @Bloke-in-Stoke
      @Bloke-in-Stoke  Před rokem +1

      Thanks Steve. I'll have to do a bit of research on Brown's Pies. Stoke market was like foreign travel for me when I was a lad with Longton and Hanley being my regular feeding grounds. I'm Weston Coyney born and bred and Hanley came in via my grandparents. Great days. So many places are long since gone, sadly all to be replaced with the likes of KFC and McDonald's. The once famous "Hold in the Wall" (ow in the wow) oakcake shop is no more and there is no more "alf a ovis" butty from Burgess's, Meir, either. More to come as soon as I can get my finger out. Cheers.

    Hi mate just discovered your video , am a stoke lad too my question is are you filming with a insta 360 and if so do you edit the footage on your laptop/ computer thanks Terry

    • @Bloke-in-Stoke
      @Bloke-in-Stoke  Před měsícem +1

      Hi Terry, nice to have you with us 👍
      Yes, most of my stuff is done with the Insta 360 ONE X2.
      Editing usually starts with shot selection on an iPad. Once I have the shots set up, direction, zoom and pan, that gets exported as a standard, none 360, MP4 file.
      Final edit is done on a Linux desktop.
      The reason I don't do it all on a desktop is because raw 360 editing isn't really supported to any degree just yet as the Insta software only supports Windows and Mac. I don't have a Windows machine with good enough GPU to handle the 360 raw footage and doing it on a machine with out a GPU is possible but painful.
      Hope that helps but happy to give you the full demo if you are interested.
      Have a great weekend, cheers 🍺
