    • Learn Malayalam | Sans...
I gave myself 7 days to learn my mother tongue. By the end of it, I aimed to speak to my Grandmother in Kerala fluently in Malayalam.
All the work was totally worth it just to see the cute, surprised face of a happy grandmother!
Here are the 4 most effective methods I used. Hope it helps anyone who wants to learn a language quickly.
I used these methods just to gain conversational fluency over the language -- reading and writing aspects aside. If you really want to master reading, writing, and speaking -- more power to you! But be ready to invest a minimum of 8-12 months in this endeavor, maybe a little less if you invest every waking moment in it. You can do it!
Thank you to these darling people who helped me out:
Elikutty -- An inspiring and pretty gutsy woman to embark on learning Malayalam - it's not an easy language. Have got lots to learn from her, I barely scratched the surface of her work. She goes into reading and writing Malayalam also.
Elikutty is a native English speaker on a journey to learn Malayalam herself, she shares tips for understanding alphabets, grammar, and conversational phrases to help you get in touch with Kerala culture! Be sure to follow her on Instagram: @eli.kutty and subscribe to her CZcams channel / @learn-malayalam
Even if you don't want to learn Malayalam, it's just too cute to see her speaking and teaching so sincerely.

Your Ammamma is a gem!! So proud of you going on the journey to learning your mother tongue, I'm on the same boat as you with coming to learn Malayalam too!! My mom's side of the family hail from Thrissur, Kerala and my fathers side of the family come from Jaffna, Sri Lanka:) Being born and raised in Montreal, Canada, I learned English and French, and the traditional Jaffna Tamil dialect because of my Appamma which I'm so grateful for but I just find Malayalam absolutely beautiful to listen to, it's truly like music! I can understand Malayalam decently because Tamil is so close to Malayalam especially the Jaffna Tamil dialect, in fact most people from Tamil Nadu hearing the Jaffna Tamil dialect automatically assume we're speaking Malayalam. I was supposed to go to Kerala for the first time this July with my family but trip got cancelled due to the COVID mess, so I'm taking this as a sign to learn Malayalam:) you're inspiring! Your Malayalam is beautiful and your content is AMAZING!! New subscriber thanks for sharing! May God bless you and your beautiful family!

You will catch on the Malayalam pretty easily , esp w your Tamil background . But I guess your mom would have a better idea on that😊 take care and best wishes in your Malayalam journey🌟✨⚡️

I don't typically comment but I feel really compelled to. I am a mallu born and raised in Canada and was never taught to speak Malayalam, although I can understand pretty fluently. As a lover of languages myself I can speak French, and currently working on Japanese as well. Ive always had this disconnect from my roots as we are Christian and kids at school would use that to denote my Indian heritage saying I was 'too white'. As I've grown, Ive tried taking lessons in Malayalam with my traditional church but kind of dropped it. This video really motivates me to pick it up once again. Goal: be able to speak to my Ammachi. Thank you for this video and the encouragement!!

While this is great, I think it's a bit misleading to say how "quickly" you've learned. Anyone seeking to learn should understand that while she did not know the language starting out, her background is being Malayalee. Meaning that subconsciously she actually knows quite a bit more than someone who has no familiarity to the language. She states in the video that she understands quite a bit already which is half the battle. Otherwise, great tutorial.

Wow speaking an hour is pretty good!!! I feel a lot of South Indians, Malayalees especially born in Canada, we understand a lot but we don't speak. We are laughed upon and so we don't end up speaking I found or people don't try to speak with you. Only when we are older and we really push that we want to try, then its taken seriously in my experience. I am doing a lot of what you are displaying in the video, so I hope that I can also carry on long conversations. I can do short conversations but wish to get into deeper dialect! This video was encouraging! :D

  • @riyaroy6528
    @riyaroy6528 Před 4 lety +8

your malayalam is soo good, I was really impressed, especially since the pronunciation was amazing, to improve it even further you would just have to practise saying the words and phrases, the way you say 'malayalam' needs a bit improvement because you need to use your tongue to say it when you say the 'lam' your tongue needs to touch the bottom of your mouth and that will help make the pronunciation much better and sound so much more stronger than saying 'malayalem' which sounds less convincing
Malayalam is a really tough language to sound native in and the fact that you are already so good is amazing!
    Keep up the good work.

You are great to learn the language very fastly without any hesitation. Good, you could recall your language and learned it. Language depends upon where you are brought up. There is nothing wrong to learn the mother tongue at a later stage. Frankly speaking, people who are from English medium background use English for the script. Even Indians also speak a lot of English with their mother tongue. Indian Youngsters use their mother tongue but hardly the Indian script is used by them for reading or writing. I respect all languages, cultures, and also western culture. Do not be shy about learning. It is a continuous process applicable to all human beings. All Indians must know to speak simple words of their mother tongue to speak. The literature of Indian languages is very vast and all depends upon people's interest. Language must be learned with passion rather than compulsion. I feel no one should compel a person to learn the language. You are learning it with your passion. That's awesome.
