  • @herrbrahms
    @herrbrahms Před 8 měsíci +1

    I don't listen to this piece very often because of the extreme technical intensity. To me, these books of variations/etudes are like the K2 of the piano. They're a nearly impossible undertaking. They exist beyond where anything can hope to live. They dwell in the Death Zone. They're not themselves even alive, but a creation of a machine that has complete ambivalence to whether you the mortal pianist live or die.
    But if you somehow make it without turning back as any sensible person would do, you reach the truest summit of your craft. You achieve piano godhood. There can't be more than a couple dozen pianists alive at any one time who have truly mastered this.

    First and foremost, Liszt is one of my heroes, and his Sonata in B minor has had a profound influence in my life.
    He was a tremendous pianist, and supreme arranger. Everyone agrees on that.
    Nonetheless, I´d like to say to all of you in all fairness: Sight-reading these variations could be achievable ... playing these varitionas at first sight is impossible. We have to accept that there are a lot of myths and fallacies surrounding Liszt's persona. The dubious anecdote regarding Liszt performing these variations flawlessly at first sight, is one of those myths. Too bad we don't have recordings to support my argument.
    As far as pianism is concerned, It is my firm belief that Brahms was as remarkable as Liszt. Do not belittle Brahms´ chefs d'oeuvre. From my point of view, Brahms and Beethoven wrote the most brilliant piano pieces ever.
    Brahms´ greatest merit, in terms of pianism, was to commence moulding his unique style at a very young age, in an epoch were 90% of composers pianists were deeply influenced by Chopin.

      Though very hard to imagine, it is possible to play these variations at first sight... I saw the pianist Conrad Tao sight-read Alkan etudes better than I could play them if I studied them. This is the best recording of the Brahms -Paganini I know. the Arrau could have been better recored. Kissin is so smart he puts in the growlof the eighth chord in left hand .Obviously Brahms wanted that there is no accent but that he wrote another left hand chord there pianists shoud kow what this means . Yet I don't remember all the great and not famous pianiss too I ve heard not noticing . Or maybe ts my 1s time noticing . Kissin makes this exciting .I'm amazed hat other ianists dont bring out the lion in this . Backhaus,the young Kempf,the famous Brahms Julius Katchen player American who died young I need to hear him again .Pletnev does he play Brahms How could this firebreathig demon not play eithe rof the big Brahms Var. Katchen IS wonderful in the Brahms -Schumann which I grew up as a child loving ! ) Arrau got 3 suites in he Phillips along with Brendel who I say is a greater virtuoso with as much panache .I've been very against Arrau unfairly and foolishly but i have not heard good recordings and his piano sound is always not "right" .His Mozart playing is astonishingly ???Iwont say but if you hear Ingrid Haebler!!!,Uchida !! Perahia even Lili Kraus who has sincerely grown in my estimation ! in Mozart you realize ow Mozart should sound and how he makes sense. Many a supervirtuoso shows his lack of taste and ghetto demeanor in his essaying Mozart . Lupu recorded an ideal Mozart whni was achild with Andre Previn ( he is astonishing too in his own right. He was smarter than many international ly known pianistto have been able to play as he did with rather limited training . Brendel did right when he told Phillips that Haebler was worth representing . I have her Chpin waltzes on a cassette. she is a Phenomenon of taste and can play a passage in a way that no mtter how many centuries Im given I will never be able to accomplish . Someone tell me Rosalyn tureck left us some mozart . Did she tramp haha all around dis welt in all Bach recitals and was she recorded in any thing else. I must research this . I guess i better hear Kissin's Chopin again . when his videos came out along time ago . Ipicked them up couldnt wai to watch a great pianist as a child play chaikosky concerto. he shold give us no2 or 3 . How is it possible no.2 and 3 are so trivial and weak sounding. He wrote every one of thse symphonies is fine music and i want to study those orchestrations . Tchai was a very smart man .Trifonov is really impressing me . Noone plays chopin better than the almost unknown Chiu . record companies sould be pushing him .I think chiu is the most talented! most astute, tasteful virtuoso -trueMUSICIEN ( a are beast ) on this planet . If he ever gives us some Liszt it will out class every other Lisztian on the planet .Poetry in chopin is not as obvious as the cheap peanut gallery would have us think. Hear his etudes and then write and beg for the Ballades, Scherzi an Nocturnes someday !!!! Forget Pollini ,dust off Cortot and see how much diving of chopin chiu really accomplishes I need a piano blog but who the hell am i and i never
    studied with a famous teacher or went to a conservatory and even today now that Im
    woke still couldnt even win a competitin in my own little town . I simply canot play piano ! But I've learned aout style , taste and judgement and i know a little about what
    the hands sound like when they fall on a keyboard . Perlemuter 's etudes why didnt we hear them earlier not great stuff. I have so many recordings of he Chopin etudes .Brailowsky is worth remembering ? Cziffra defintiely IS !

    Kissin's technical prowess is Horowitzian in this reading. Variation 11: even Michelangeli leaves it out; Anda flubs part of it; Bachauer slows it down a bit to play it; Wuja Wang mutes out the octaves and does the variation with the thumbs and index fingers emphasized. The rest of the books are tossed off magically and Kissin takes time to bring out the musical elements. I wonder if Brahms was able to fly through these. Or even wanted to. Arrau's reading is less acrobatic, less like what you'd hear from Argerich, but weightier.....more moderate tempi.......more Brahmsian............nothing glib or supersonic tempi.
