For an external hard disk, it should have a drive letter assigned to it when it's connected. Just point the backup to that drive. For example, if your external drive is drive D, the command is: backup database TestDB1 to disk = 'D:\TestDB.bak'
Thanks for putting this together. I know the backup isn't difficult however I don't have sql server 2012 installed yet so it was nice to see you walk through the steps. Question, can you set your backup to a networked drive? I'm thinking I'll throw a DROBO on the network and place that in a separate building on the same LAN.
Does the label "(Restoring...)" next to database name on Object Explorer, appears also during automatic Backup?? it is very important for me to know every case that label can be shown there. Thanks
Can I just save this file to, say dropbox, then put it on another computer without any previous databases or access or whatever. And just add it there? I just want to save my database somewhere. How?
hi, i tried to restore one backup put i got this error: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo) ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The media family on device 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Backup\Sports Management (2).bak' is incorrectly formed. SQL Server cannot process this media family. RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3241) pls help!!
I don't get an OK or RESTORE button. Mine just says VERIFY BACKUP MEDIA or something like that. Can only do a verify media operation, but can't restore.
***** I found my solution. My screen resolution was too low and the OK and RESTORE buttons were out of view off the bottom of the screen. Try increasing your screen resolution and the buttons will be visible.
The .MDF file and .BAK files were Corrupt and, we fixed the backup file by SQL backup recovery software. This backup recovery software is the part of Stellar SQL database Toolkit. by this incident, we learnt to maintain the backup of the database. More details about the toolkit is available here: www.stellarinfo.com/sql-database-toolkit.php
Hi Miss Parker, Good to know that the software fixed your problem. I am SQL database administrator having 15 years of experience. Well, in my position, the organisation do not expect any mistake for the database and its related things. We maintained the proper backup plan and fixed the corruption so many times without any software. This time, your mentioned software saved my job. We repaired our company’s database with the help of it. So, thanks for sharing it.
