I never understood the hate for this song. I always loved it. Bang bang!
One of the most cheerful and upbeat tunes about murder. Always loved this song, and thanks for playing it!
You'd be surprised, honestly. Lyrics dissonance is a popular thing.
Loving your Beatles reactions. It's certainly an enormous and varied treasure chest 😊 I dont understand anyone who doesn't like the Beatles!
“Don’t let Maxwell get behind you” 😂😂 I loved watching your face when you knew what was coming lol. The haters are gonna hate but the song is brilliant. A story of a serial killer set to a vaudeville style backdrop. (It’s a story of instant karma, really.)
Totally agree with everything you said! I couldn't help blowing up your photo to get a better look😂! No worries though. First, I'm just a old man complimenting you. And second, I won't sneak up behind you with a silver hammer! 😅
@@RobertDavis-qh1ry Lol, good to know. Thanks.
This song took a very long time to record, all the other BEATLE's hated this song. Mal Evans is hitting an anvil with a hammer. I always liked this song
Hated making it. They didn't hate the song. John did.
Three days. Many many songs took weeks during months
I always liken it to elton John's 'I think I'm gonna kill myself'
Hitting that anvil!
Took them 3 days.
One of my favorites by the, but Paul had to be on a good one when he was writing this!!
GREAT one, Miss Jayy!! Told ya, the Beatles are like a box of chocolates: you never know what you're gonna get! 😂
Your Beatles reactions are so fun and entertaining! LOVE them, Miss jayy!!!!!!😊
Always expect the unexpected with the Beatles especially after 1965.
I love this song SO MUCH. First, I love how cool the arrangement is and how upbeat it sounds, and how goofy AND scary the lyrics are. I also think this is one of the most funny and enjoyable bass lines from Paul.
This song just tickles my spot in terms of dark rumor. And I know of very few songs that did it this well. Hell… maybe none, actually. Paul is just such a musical genius, honestly.
I love the old Music Hall style.
Paul introduced Maxwell during the "Get Back" sessions in January 1968. Paul, George (who plays bass guitar) and Ringo returned to the song in July. (9th, 10th and 11th). It was John's first time back in the studio after he and Yoko were hospitalized after being in a serious car accident) in Scotland on 1 July. Yoko requested a double bed be delivered to the studio so she could stay close to John. The bed and an overhead microphone were set up for her, much to the chagrin of the other Beatles and studio staff.. Paul overdubbed the Moog synthesizer bits while Mal Evans bang banged an anvil. Paul's wish to have Maxwell be their next single was shot down quite effusively by his bandmates. Dark humor indeed JAYY. That was a great reaction. RNB
By the way JAYY, to clarify for you, MAL EVANS, who banged on the anvil, was the Beatles long time roadie, who they used before they were famous, he was a gentle giant of a man, and loved very much buy us Beatles fans
@@patticrichton1135 Author Kenneth Womack, one of the very best of the Beatles authors, has written a bio of Mal entitled Living the Beatles Legend: The Untold Story of Mal Evans, due to come out in November if not mistaken. Ken has also written two excellent bio's of George Martin, "Maximum Volume: '26-'66" and "Sound Pictures: '"66-'16", and "All Things Must Pass Away: Harrison, Clapton, and Other Assorted Love Songs" about the friendship of George and Eric and the recording of the All Things Must Pass and Layla albums.
It was a dark humor, and they don't condone killing people either, but it is a funny song. I LOVED your facial expressions when you see where it is going! Jayy, you are SO MUCH FUN to watch when you are reacting to the Beatles music....you are just a delight, and always make me happy! You are ADORABLE. ( I told you once that on your journey through the Beatles music, you will NEVER know what you are going to get....that is WHY they were NEVER EVER BORING!
You caught that Paul laughed after singing “…so he waits behind.” The urban legend is when he sang the line John pulled his pants down and mooned Paul.
My husband was taught this in primary school music class 😳 A room full of kids singing “Bang Bang….”
Great instrumentation
Ha ha, you have to admit that it catches you off guard and it actually makes the song fun
When this song came out it was to me just a great sing along melody and catchy production… it was quite a while before I picked up on the lyrics and realised how dark it was. Another clever song from Paul!!
Jayy, you totally understand the Beatles music. You get the most out of their music. There are millions if not billions of us. Love your videos. You observed that while everyone can tell a Beatles song when they hear it. Not one is the same as the other.
Oh wow, haven't heard this gem in ages. Thanks. Love this song.
The Beatles showing their diversity - great review!
An upbeat cheerful song about a serial killer. Genius from Lennon / McCartney
Recently, I've speculated that the people Maxwell kills are vampires. That's why the hammer has to be made of silver.
initial reaction - priceless !!
This was hysterical to watch your face!
Abby Road is one of my fave Classic rock albums.
Thanks for the memories...and the insights!
Music is subjective. One person might say its not their/his best but thats just their opinion. IMHO All Beatles songs are great 😀
Beatles. Always a trip. Well! Lol! That's right!! Great reaction! Thank you!
When a reporter asked John Lennon why the Beatles broke up, he said "Maxwell's Silver Hammer."
during the making of this album, it was rumored that Paul MacCartney had died. If you look at the Volkswagen Beetle on the street of the album cover, the license plate reads "28 if" which would have been the age of Paul at the time.
Love listening to our Beatles with you! A medical murderer indeed!!!! 😁
Best reaction to Maxwell💯😂😂😂
Jayy, your facial expressions are priceless. 😂😂 I love it! This is just another silly, fun song from my favorite album of all time. Keep em coming honey. I watch your videos every single day and they make me smile. 🌺✌️
Great reactions😂
We listen to the entire album, not as singles. (Time was slower then). It was an event.
I have always loved this song! Like you, I laughed the first time I heard it. It is still one of my favorites from the Beatles. It is a feel good song to me. Love them!! 😊❤️❤️❤️❤️🎼
You never know what you're Going to get when you put on a beatles song
McCartney had started writing this during their excursion to India, and he had intended this for "The White Album", but they didn't have the time to record it during those sessions. They then rehearsed it some more during the "Get Back" sessions which ultimately became the "Let it Be" album, but they didn't actually properly record it until the "Abbey Road" album, which is where it finally appeared.
The song I used to sing at bad days at work. The bosses sure were lucky I didnt have a hammer hehe. If your mad then singing at least puts you in a better mood ) It has been mentioned that the way Paul kept working on the song over and over made the others mad at him even when it was done. They did not like it.
Way back in 6th and 7th grade we had to do a exercise routine to this song as a warmup for P.E. I don't think I could do it anymore. Enjoy
Listen to where Paul starts to crack up..Writing 50 times...
Some excellent work from the great Wendy Carlos on this song.
Paul made the band do so many takes of this that they all nearly went insane....talking about it years later in an interview, someone asked John Lennon “what broke up The Beatles?”...and John replied “Maxwell’s Silver Hammer”.
I like it tho.
🤣
John broke up the Beatles.
This song is a banger LOL!
Jayy, I just rewatched this video and I love your reaction. I don’t get why some people think this is a throwaway song! I love it and your reaction is perfect! Yes! It’s about a serial killer. Yes it’s awful! That’s what makes it funny! You saw that immediately and I love it. You’re the best. I’m quite certain you will never see this but I had to say it anyway. ❤️
Great anvil work by the under appreciated Mal Evans.
Nevertheless, John, George and Ringo shared a great disliking for Paul's creation
The other Beatles hated this song with a passion, but Paul insisted it get recorded
They were so rrrock and aaaartsy
Great track from the incredible Abbey Road ❤
Beatles always had a foot in Dance Hall (Comedy music), This is a dark example of that influence. A more positive song is “When I’m 64”.
ahahah I knew this would be a perfect video LOL I personnally speak french so for a few years I thought it was simply a very happy song... THE DAY I REALIZED. Omg ahah ;-; This is not a very well loved song amongst Beatles fans from what I read on the internet but I love it, especially because of the lyrics vs. the music :P
Maxwell's. Silver Lay down upon upon his his head.
Only The Beatles can make murder sound so pretty. LoL. 😂
Rose and Vallerie were Max's groupies.
One of my fave Beatles' songs! Sorry to hear that John, Ringo, and George hated it ... oh, well.
McCartney wanted to make the point how fleeting life can be.
Somebody must do a Silver Hammer Man movie
That's Paul's song, he must have been joking in a strange way lol.
Light and breezy tune about a homicidal maniac.
"It takes a silver bullet (hammer) to kill me"-Lawrence of Arabia
This is pure self indulgence by Paul McCartney. He made the band do over a 100 takes of this to get it just right. They understandably got sick of it. Paul wanted it to be a single but it was never going to be.
The Manson Family tried to reenact the final verse while Charlie was on trial for orchestrating the murders of Sharon Tate and her houseguests. Squeaky and one of the other girls started chanting "Must go, must go free", as Charlie jump from his seat and lunged at the Judge. They caught him and took him down before he reached the judge. Luckily, Charlie did not have a hammer.
A bit of trivia… the Manson murders took place the same day (August 8, 1969) the Beatles did their photo shoot walking across the street for the Abbey Road cover.
So who takes the part of ROSE and VALERIE in the song, it must be John and George
😂😂😂😂😂
Leave it to Paul McCartney to write about a serial killer! Lol
Only the Beatles could make murder sound fun 😅
Paul McCartney did so many takes and re-takes of this song the rest of the Beatles came to hate the song
Your reaction to that song is astonishingly awesome!
Could this be the first song about a serial killer?
Charlie Manson liked this song.
That man was evil. You could see it in his eyes.
@@kimberlygarwood-jl5om Aww Charlie was just misunderstood
Ha! "Not again, Max!" Just some dark humor, not to be taken seriously. Leave it to Paul to come up with a sicko tale like this and put it to a children's sounding melody.
Can anybody tell me what this song is about? Please.
The times, they were a changing! This song was very unusual in it's day and broke new ground pushing the limits in violent expression.
Unfortunately, it helped to open the floodgates toward what we hear today in so much of the music and see in every form of entertainment.
Maxwell's Silver Hammer's violence was not to be taken seriously and didn't lead to more violence. There were already violent songs like Stagger Lee, And Then He Slapped Me, Hey Joe, Down By The River...
@@Accam570 That's your opinion. I disagree with your opinion.
Down by the River was approximately the same time period but did not have near the influence of The Beatles on the youth.
I know..I was there and one of the youth at the time.
Your opinion is different than mine. Your saying I'm wrong doesn't make you right.
@@rogandbingofbingalahtravel3680 Tell me the names of some other serial killer parodies.
@@Accam570 I referred to violence in the song and it's groundbreaking elements of the time, not serial killers in particular. Read the first comment again and then try this..take a deep breath and chill. I'm not here to argue with you.
Your opinion is fine..enjoy it.
@@rogandbingofbingalahtravel3680 lol, as if I need to chill. Anyone with any insight can understand that the song is just a parody of murder mysteries . Do you think we're supposed to take Maxwell, while on trial, getting up, getting behind the judge, and killing him with his hammer, seriously? The song may have led to comedic violence in other songs, but I can't think of any.
T.T bad ending
This song gets a lot of hate, but, in all honesty, I love it. Leave it up the Beatles to make an upbeat song about a serial killer. 😆
This is the most hated song by the three Beatles who did not sing it. Names need not be mentioned.
They did indeed despise that track saying it was for kids. Being a kid when it was released I did like it lol.
@@vincentschmitt7597 They despised that track because they felt it was a lousy song that Paul insisted on doing over and over again. This song was first tried out during the Get Back/Let It Be sessions, so they were working on it for several months.
Why was it silver though? Copper would have worked.
Maybe Paul had read about the ancient Vatican ritual when a pope died. If that happened, the cardinal camerlengo verified the pope's death by tapping the pope’s head with a silver hammer while calling out his baptismal name three times; when receiving no response, he pronounced the pope’s death. So, the silver hammer made 'sure' that the pope was dead. (Dunno if this is still customary though.)
@@BCTMarcus
Informative, thanks.
Hahaa, copper. I have to laugh at my comment.
All the other Beatles did not like this song. It's Paul's brain child. It's not his best effort.
Its a great song!
I think Maxwell was autistic.
It has a catchy tune, but it's rotten. Hated this one. Too many maxwells in the world.
The Beatles never fail at childish pop music. Unfortunately, they released this stuff to the "psychedelic" crowd so people read something into this that wasn't there.
