I feel he’s singing about someone whose job takes him away from home. Maybe a long distance truck driver like he mentions or him being away on tours and how wonderful it is to get home. The line where he says, “and your mother called last Friday/Sunshine made her cry,” was a real life reference to a time he was away on tour and his wife’s mother called her and told her that she heard John’s song Sunshine On Your Shoulders on the radio and it made her cry. Wonderful. He sings of his real life, his love, pain, sadness, extreme happiness by living in the Rocky Mountains and his deep sadness for causing his wife’s unhappiness and their divorce. We all feel him when we listen to his heartfelt songs. He died way way too early, but his music lives on and on.

John Denver was a complicated man in many ways. But, he had a very sensitive heart and was gifted in sharing it through words and music. One suggestion for your emotional reaction to this song - it could be that your concept of home has changed with the presence of your newborn son in your home. Nothing seems to change someone's perception of life more than becoming a parent. You and your wife are no longer just a couple, you are a family. No matter where your house is, your home is where your family is.

I grew up in a military family like John did and by the time I was 9 years old we had already moved 6 times so it’s a very nomadic life. By the the time I reached adulthood we had logged 10 moves. To a shy child it was excruciating but necessary. You grow up a little faster and you learn a lot about people and life. I think it made us closer as a family as we learned to depend on and look out for each other. Another of John’s songs that I think you would enjoy is his song called For You that he sung at his Wildlife Concert. It is beautiful. Thank you for enjoying John Denver as much as I do. Every day events and times that most people expect and/or take for granted, John Denver has a way of singing about those same events that makes the person realize how much they truly mean to you, the intense amount of love, and how much every second can be cherish, down to the look in her eyes when she sees you walking up to her after you have been gone for 10 days on the road working to support your family. Nothing is ever taken for granted with John Denver, he cherished every thing in life. Whether an eagle soaring above in the sky, the sight of dolphins jumping and swimming..................every little thing was a priceless gift to be cherished and respected. I miss him so much. I have all his music and continue to play it and smile. Although some songs will bring a tear to the eye, at the same time it fills your heart with love and appreciation. Oh Andre it is so so hard moving away from home for us americans. As a military child myself, I have moved to and from the east and west coast 7 times, I have lived on islands and in deserts, in America and abroad. But through all that, my family has stayed in the south, near Florida or in Kentucky, so hearing these songs, that I was raised on from my parents, and them by theirs, makes me so homesick for my family home. It is the little things, the fire, the family dinner, the emotion of knowing you are with those who see you as yourself and have since birth, it is the best feeling to be home.

Andre, never apologize for your English! I wish I was bilingual as fluently as you. Your accent is lyrical.

I was married to a truck driver for 20 years. This was practically their theme song.

I love watching your reactions. I love that you get emotional listening to the words of the songs. To me, it shows, that it doesn’t matter where we are from we all treasure the same things. I hope that you are able to come to the United States. God Bless!

He was amazing. I love his "Wild Montana Skies" obviously because I'm in Montana. A really fun song he does is "Grandma's Feather Bed" you'll definitely want lyrics on those to songs if you listen to them.

Enjoying your reactions to John Denver. A few other suggestions are Seasons of the Heart, Dreamland Express, Shanghai Breezes, How can I Leave You Again, Perhaps Love and For You.

I'm pretty sure he's describing Highway 82 (a four lane still, I think), that goes from Glenwood Springs to Aspen, Colorado. John lived in Aspen. I used to live in Carbondale, which is on that route, at around the same time. I can easily picture the scene that he is singing about, even though he refers to Brighton, Utah. Yes, there is a valley between the Glenwood Springs and Aspen.

Yes, most Americans move several times in their lives. University, then fist job, life events. Some folks are in the military. You miss "home", but oftentimes when you go back... everything has completely changed. Then you really long for "home".

I tear up listening to this too. John Denver has a number of songs with great lyrics. The Carpenters are great too (Karen Carpenter's voice is top notch)
