I know Ellie makes a comment early that FERDA or the military bombed part of the city, but I get the strong feeling that Seattle was hit hard by an earthquake. The amount of damage we see throughout seems more then what a few air strikes could do. On top of that, storm damage over the course of 25 years would be enough to make the area around the Space Needle an island.
An earthquake wold make sense for the Space Needle to be placed on an island! It would also explain all the flooding too. I like that interpretation!
Ellie assumed that’s what happened because she’s seen it down. It totally could’ve been earthquake damage
Its actually because Seattle was burned centuries ago and then it was rebuild over its fundations. Thats why the levels of the ground dont match. The bombs revealed what was under "the new ground". And earthquake could had happened as well, but its cool to consider this info too
@@sandromercadobustinza6339 I can believe the earthquake would have messed up Seattle's landscape.
I don’t see how the Space Needle would still be standing after such land altering earthquake. Its location really doesn’t make any sense.

The "island" is actually Queen Anne hill (north of Space Needle). The low lands were flooded so the island is newly formed. (there are notes about it). The foresty area is where the Seraphites "razed the ground" (there's a note about that too). So the Space Needle is actually perfectly located.
The amount of time and heart the producers put in to this game its astonishing, and it really shows. This has to be one of the best games ever created, everything in it feels so real and organic, its hard to put it in words. No to mention the story, gameplay and graphics. Il take my hat off to you man for making this video, Seattle looks like a nice city, but i have to say that i prefer the game version better, for as long as i can remember i have always been atracted to decrepit, abandoned and old places, where nature start taking its land back, places that depict how people used to live once. Anyway, great video:)
that's totally legit. Seattle right now is a weird mix of big tech companies and very close to the wilderness. So the juxtaposition is pretty startling. Cheers! I super appreciate the support!
The Serevena Hotel (Ellie, Day 1) also exists in real life. The real name is Hotel Sorrento, and it‘s also not too far away from downtown, just like in the game. Even the entrance hall is imitated pretty well, also the style of the rooms is accurate.
I've only been in the lobby, and that was pretty accurate from what I remember. I'll do my best to include Hotel Sorrento in the follow up!
Maybe most of the area around the Space Needle sunk into the water? A lot of places in the game showed sunken areas in Seattle that needed a boat
Possible. They do go west from the Aquarium so that makes me think Bainbridge, Kingston, or even Vashon Island?
@@thingsareinmotion From the game, the Seraphites "raze down" most of the pre-Outbreak structures as their religious beliefs blame the old world and technology for the outbreak.
The Space Needle would probably be a little harder to burn down and raze than some wood and drywall structures XD

Great video concept :D Wish they did some Seattle grunge/music-related monuments in games though, that would have been a cool easter egg
The song "Future days" , the one Joel sings to Ellie and is present throughout the whole game , is actually a Pearl Jam song.
Also the song is from the album , which you see a promo poster for in the music store in downtown Seattle.
Amazing video! Thank you. I visited Seattle three times so far and aching to go back, especially now after the game. I wished for Pike Place Market to be featured in the game and agree on the space needle position. I guess they wanted the needle to be shown in the game, but also needed an island. Hey. Great video. Just a small correction regarding the Space Needle. You needed a boat to get to the Space Needle in the game because of all of the flooding that had happened in the city. It created a small island north of downtown, and the Scars have claimed that as their island.
I totally can understand that point of you. The reason I was skeptical of it is because the topography doesn't seem the area the space needle would actually be in even with all that flooding. I wondered why it didnt look more similar to the flooding that happened near the downtown area with more destroyed buildings around.
This is the only video without ads. big thumbs up to you great content. And wait, Lev where's Abby? 😂
Thanks a ton! super appreciate that. I locked Abby in the basement since she took so long to save me
I live in Washington and have been to Seattle a few times. I was very confused when the space needle was on an island because I've been to the top of it myself and I believe there is some sort of concert hall next to it, it was this reflective freeform metal facade and Pikes place is nearby as well. I was surprised to not see that building and see all of the trees there in the game that looked way older than 25 years old because the area around the space needle struck me as more Marshland than evergreen forest and it is very flat there. I also can't remember if the stadium was still the Questfield stadium or the CenturyLink stadium by 2013 on Outbreak day (near Halloween).
Yeah, I think they missed a big opportunity by leaving out the whole Seattle Science Center area and the EMP. I don't know if it was cause of legal issues or not but it might have been a factor. The stadium changed names in 2011 to Centurylink so that part still matches.
The reason why the space needle is on an island is because of the flooding after the outbreak
it still so strange, but I guess A lot of Seattle is below the sea level so geographically it could happen lol
But the space needle is not that far from downtown so it still confuses me

I live in Olympia. I've been to Seattle several times but I didn't know where some of the places were at. So this was super duper cool!
About the Space Needle location and needing a boat to get to it: they show massive flooding in the city, perhaps exacerbated by global warming and sea levels rising. I don’t know the topography of the area but let’s assume they are implying that those issues caused that area to be cut off from the land mass, thus creating an island requiring a boat to get to it
Wow! That's pretty dope!
I'm from Seattle and I think they did a really good job!
I really enjoyed what they did as well! The caught the city-suburb vibe, Bellevue or anything but more like Greenlake and around Capitol Hill and put a lot of attention to detail in Downtown.
I think the space needle wasn’t on any of the islands like Brainbridge or Southbeach, but instead the city itself was separated by mass flooding, hence having to take a boat north, and getting to the “island”. Aka the upper half of Seattle, the half that includes the space needle. The real islands west of the coast would have taken a lot longer to travel to. And the space needle being over there has zero sense to it, and ND would never choose to do that.
I mean that's kind of what I think too. It's just crazy to think it would turn into a giant village. Where did all the buildings go?
Used to live in Bremerton, which is an hour away from Seattle by ferry
It makes me super proud that TLoU2 takes place in Seattle. I love seeing the aquarium, the ferris wheel, Lumen Field, the Space Needle, Chinatown, the Gayborhood... Its all so well done. I miss Seattle...
WA State resident, born and raised ✌💚
(Also fun fact, the original release date, Feb. 21st, is my birthday! ... needless to say, i was bummed out when they delayed the release to June...)
I agree about the space needle, thought that was a strange liberty to take, I guess they wanted a landmark and there wasn’t one out there. If you notice, every last of us level has a landmark to help you gauge progress (capital building, bridge, ferris wheel etc)
That makes a lot of sense! I guess the smaller suburban areas also had the rainboe crosswalks and little easter eggs like the music shop and etc too
Imagine if they included a mission part where you had to go through Pikes Outdoor market or had some other easter eggs like the gum wall 😂
I was wondering the same thing! Walking through the wrecked pikes place. They would have been able to tell some haunting stories through there. Plus make it plenty scary with a bunch of infected walking around.
I still remember back in 2014(while the game was set in 2018), Joel as Delsin, spent a wonderful time with Abby as Fetch in Seattle. Damn....
lol, Troy Baker is literally every character in every video game ever released
I want to know the construction cranes that Abby and Lev go through, which buildings they connect to in real Seattle? I have some assumptions, correct me if I am wrong.
I think the first construction crane connects the Fourth and Madison Building (shown in the game under construction) to the DocuSign Tower, and the second construction crane connects the DocuSign Tower to the 901 Fifth Avenue Building.
To the right of Abbey's movement over the second construction crane you can see the building with the exterior resembles the Seattle Municipal Tower, but the height and roof resemble the Henry M. Jackson Federal Building, the Downtown Seattle YMCA with a green roof and in the distance you can see the Harborview Medical Center with a slightly different view of the buildings.
To the left of Abbey's movement over the second construction crane is the Safeco Plaza, behind the Fourth and Madison Building (shown in the game under construction).
As Abby begins to descend the second construction crane on the ladder before falling into the pool, Smith Tower can be seen behind the DocuSign Tower.
KMAB 13 News Station in The Last of Us Part II is a KOMO-TV in real Seattle near the Space Needle.
The buildings in the game are not located in their true geographical location.
Woah, you know the buildings pretty well! I'll have to look back and peek at the details to find out for you but I'll see what I can do!
Pretty good video. The one thing that was quite disappointing in the game was not seeing the Space Needle more often. I’ve been to Seattle twice and have been up the Space Needle both times and I only saw it pretty close to the end of both Seattle Arcs.
I don't know if there were any legal issues with landmark likeness they were trying to avoid or not, but yeah I wish they had a specific section of the game that we got to experience in or around that South Lake Union/ Queen Anne area more. The space needle is far enough away that you can tell what it is but there are no details visible of the structure, which makes me think that was an intentional design choice.
Its amazing and so beautiful how fast nature claims everything
I think a lot of people won’t get this reference but the convention center’s location has been confirmed
hmmm I tried really hard to think of what your referencing but yeah, no success. Is it from a movie?
Great job. I've never visited Seattle, but the placement of the Space Needle looked off to me. I never realized the Space Needle is only a mile from the Aquarium. From what I looked up on Google Maps, they make it look like the Space Needle is on Bainbridge Island?
Firstly, thanks so much! Yeah I believe they made it look like it was on bainbridge.
I looked it up because I also thought it was odd. The sepharite island is Queen Anne, it's just severely flooded and they've knocked the buildings down. During Abby's portion of the game you can find a map in the theater that shows this. It's pretty neat.
My prom was at the Seattle aquarium so pretty cool I got to see it in the game
If you look up the distance from the Ferris wheel to the space needle it is clear that the Serephite island formed after the ocean flooded the Pike Pine area
And in game when you have to swim as Ellie after that boat stops working that there’s way more ocean than what the google map shows and what is in real life so I think that pike pine area got flooded and just became an island in the ocean and
I believe that the reason Yara and Abby had to take a weird route was because they needed to go to where the WlFs had their boats to get to the island so they probably had to go around meaning the approaches it from a completely different side since the space needle is closer to the Ferris wheel anyway irl
it’s also heavily mentioned that FEDRA (the game equivalent of FEMA) tried bombing cities and parts of the city outside the QZ so that is why it’s so messed up and also all that rain after 25 years the ground probably got supersaturated meaning it got brittle and crumbled
I wish they had an updated map of what the area looked like after everything happened. The map in the theater isn't reliable in that sense. I'm also curious how quick do you think the could get from the top of that skyscraper to their home base?
Love some of the very specific shops and stores I notice living in Seattle. Space needle on an island makes zero sense though. Even if there was and earthquake or flooding, it's at the bottom of a massive hill and only like a mile from the aquarium. Apparently my place is underwater too. Oh well.
haha I think I feel the same way. Both would be flooded because they're so close to each other and that Seattle is under sea level. I saw a lot of Einstein Bros bagel shop references and Jamba Juice type stores too.
Thank you so much I really wanted to see this once I heard the aquarium was in real life

Greetings from a fellow photgrapher (amateur). Neat video. I wonder if more remote locations, like Hillcrest, is also modeled after the irl-location. Is it a fact it (almost) always rains in Seattle?
Hey how's it going? I would say that Hillcrest resembles the "vibe" of Capitol Hill. My only piece of evidence is the rainbow crosswalks, but you can also find them sometimes in other parts of the city. And yes, but it might not be as you would suspect. By rain, it really is a light shower that lasts 2 hours, goes away for a while, comes back in the evening. It sometimes can be overcast for consecutive days with no rain. October through January, it rains the most. Summer's here are the best.
@@thingsareinmotion T.y. for your reply. I don't know how things are going to me personally. Up and down i guess. The only thing I found weird is the Space Needle location in-game.
It is on an island accross the bay, yet even the in-game map shows it at the correct location.
Yeah I found that super confusing too. The only thing I could attribute that to was that there was no need to update maps after an apocalypse lol.
I grew up in wa and how came they close to certain things was astonishing
I am from Seattle and I think the whole island part with the space needle is supposed to be because of the flooding. I think that Seattle center and Queen Anne are supposed to have been cut off from the rest of the city. Also you left out Pioneer Square from when Ellie first runs into the seraphites.
I would think that too. The only thing that makes me think that's not the case is that the infrastructure around the space needle isn't there anymore. Queen Anne has a lot of hills and none of those elements are incorporated in their version. Sure it could make sense with the flooding, but I feel like it would look a little different with the terrain.
Yea when Abby was explaining where the scars island was I was like um there is no island of Seattle
Thanks for this video, the game brought a destroyed Seattle to life for me I found myself looking at Google maps and CZcams for images of the city to compare.
I first thought that Haven might be Mercer Island and Abby and Lev were heading across it towards the Space Needle but from comments below it is possible that in the game nature as well as military force took back the original Island that the Space Needle is on and that is where Haven is. I'm still not sure though - I'm on my second walkthrough now so I'll pay more attention. There is also the cut scene where Abby meets Isaac at the base and one soldier in a tent is initiating new recruits and has a map of Seattle there.
Wikipedia on Seattle land reclamation:
"When white settlers first came to Seattle in the early 1850s, the tides of Elliott Bay lapped at the base of Beacon Hill.[2] The original location of the settlement that became Seattle-today's Pioneer Square-was a low-lying island."
I didn't notice that map! I'll definitely take a look thanks for that. Yeah there's quite a debate about the location of the Space Needle which is awesome to see haha. I've been digging through gameplay and actual maps to see how their narratives fit and I'll definitely be exploring it in part 2 :D

Wow they did a great job! Obviously not an exact match but I think they did well representing the city.
I think they had a great interpretation of the city! Thanks for the support :]
When they’re walking around Capitol Hill it seems like both City Market and the Crescent are depicted on Olive Street
I definitely felt they tried to capture the "tone" of the neighborhoods of Seattle in their more residential parts of the game. They mostly just reminded me of the first Last of Us with a Northwest environment. They did make a nod to how many damn coffee shops we have here.
I legit had to look a couple times to see that the WLF stadium was actually in game lol
The Queen Anne is an Island in the last of us because of the destruction from the war and the Lake Union and the Sea get flooding the way. You can see it on the map where Abby go up to the theatre to find Ellie and Tommy.
Not only the places, but the vegetation is all PNW native. I have been to most of the places, but never been to the aquarium. I really want to go now
I didnt even consider the vegetation! The only one I noticed were the firns. Thats a really good observation.
I just finished the game and loved it. I grew up on Bainbridge island so you can imagine I was pretty blown away when they said they were going to “the island”. But it was definitely odd to see the space needle there Lolol. Strange choice for sure.
yeah "the island" where the Seraphites are reminds me of Kingston, Bainbridge, Silverdale area with the surround water, environment, and the fogginess.
What you should've done was a side to side comparison like your thumbnail so we can get the two worlds in one picture
I thought about it but the field of view would be too small you would barely get the scope of like the convention center, light rail, the stadium, etc.
The village of the cult should have been on MERCER ISLAND. Literally an island in Lake Washington that is super forested and would have been secluded as hell if the bridges were destroyed. Would make a lot of sense how they’re so insular. Also could have had a dope shot of the boats racing toward the island and Mt Rainier in the background (anyone can tell you the view of the mountain is breathtaking from Mercer island.
Feel like they just wanted the Needle in the village and made it work somehow.
I would agree! That was probably the only part of the game where I felt it was disjointed. But I think that only matters to the people that know the area pretty well. Similarly, I thought it would have been a really cool sequence to have the waterfront sniper/chase scene to go through Pikes Place Market or some other iconic areas near downtown.
@@thingsareinmotion pike place would have been perfect for the sniper sequence
It was accurate enough to where I can go "Oh yeah, this place!" The thing that confused me most was the Space Needle location. The only place I haven't been to was the aquarium. The flooding explanation doesn't really work for me as I'm not sure I believe it would do that in that time frame, even without human upkeep. I don't know.
Yeah I totally agree. I don't think I needed it to be 100% accurate. It was plenty realistic enough to enjoy the playthrough for sure! The aquarium in real life is a little underwhelming lol
@@thingsareinmotion I've never been inside, just walked past it. A friend told me it wasn't similar. Although it's the most important Seattle area in the game to its story and where you're at most, my favorite was Paramount (Pinnacle in the game) theater as I saw the video games live concert there in 2017 and I could look up in the stands and see where we were sitting. Oh, and another geographical inaccuracy: wasn't GameWorks across the street from the Convention Center? I've only been there twice, once for Comic Con and PAX, and remember walking across the street to GameWorks, which is much different for the game. As someone that's lived in WA my entire life, I will admit I do not go to downtown Seattle much at all. Used to live in Lynnwood and Shoreline, but moved a bit closer to Bellevue in 09.
@@mrchiledonut They did put a lot of gameplay at the aquarium, you're right lol. Yeah gameworks is literally across the street. Downtown isn't what it used to be, that's for sure. They also made Cap Hill extremely small, but I do like all the small details they put in. Rainbow painted cross walks, all the small coffee shop (they had those in part 1 and probably used the same models, but it fit since we're the coffee capital. Other than the geographical changes I think they got the tone and vibe pretty spot on for what it might look and feel like after an apocalypse.
The view at 4:34 is literally from my old apartment building’s rooftop terrace at 5th and S King St, so that’s weird 😂
The lenghts they went to depict sections of Seattle after a post-apocalyptic civil war is genuinely incredible, nevermind tying it all up to the story and how it plays out from place to place, I really hope to check out these places myself now after playing the game.
seriously! it's one thing to recreate a city, and its totally another level when you can elevate that hard work with an incredible story.
the fact it looks so realistic is scary, mainly for the people that live in seattle. i live in california and for the small portion of the game when they were there hit way different than the rest of the game did, and it's definitely because it's my home and it's destroyed. it's scary to imagine it that way.
Its totally different when it hits close like that, but maybe that might have been a point NaughtyDog wanted to make. I mean we are in the middle of a global crisis now too. And with everyone saying its all going downhill, to me, after this game, I'm like it hasn't even begun O_o
@@thingsareinmotion ikr lol! like guys....this literally could've been a zombie apocalypse. it's not as bad as it could be!

I honestly can't blame you. Things are very turbulent here, right now. And that, probably, adds more credit to your reluctance to Seattle. Downtown Seattle is still mostly boarded up. After the protests this weekend they're probably even more so. But really, there's not much to fear other than being asked to come over to a board game night, have a conversation about the nuance of local sourced craft beer, and bragging about which exhausting hike you tackled this summer. Still a wonderful place to live, I promise.
@@thingsareinmotion I want to visit Seattle so bad, I think it's beautiful, from downtown to the suburbs
@@streetslayinggto2505 Spring through Summer is the best time to come visit. If you don't mind a little bit of drizzle any time is good :D
Get more scared because actually the fungus in the game came from Brazil lmao
@@wtfisthis96 Yes, in the Amazon there is this type of fungus, but also in various parts of the world in tropical forests. But it really is scary.
