    Since the title is "playing jazz standards and surviving jam sessions", it might be useful to give tips specifically for bassists worried about just surviving jam sessions. The bass is supporting the band 95% of the time, and doing it in very specific ways that you need to be familiar with. As a bassist, if you're worrying about survival, the number one thing you have to do is learn the language of jazz bass lines: mostly walking bass lines, but also latin jazz, and less intrusive but still supportive ballad bass lines. Sadly this video didn't even hint at this.

      @janekgwizdala  Před 10 lety +2

      Rob, thanks for your comment and for checking out the video. I always say sound is a really personal thing so you would ultimately have to try some different options and make up your own mind on the pickups. But what I can tell you is why I love the Aguilar pickups in my basses. The difference for me when we put them in my main Fodera bass was incredible. It opened up a bunch of new elements of the instrument I hadn't heard before and gave me far better response in my right hand, as well as a fatter tone and a tighter low end. Good luck with it all!

    • @ShynAwkward
      @ShynAwkward Před 9 lety +2

      I play Yamaha TRBs exclusively.
      The pickups are great, it's the TRB preamp that sounds hollow, thin & clanky.
      Replace the preamp with an Aguilar obp-3 or a John East U-Retro Preamp.
      Your TRB will sound phenomenal! - (tight, thick, clear & punchy).
      Peace & Luv. . .

    • @SL-to4oh
      @SL-to4oh Před 5 lety +4

      Yes, it is serious. Thank you for responding. I should have worded the question better. My question is: What is your purpose for choosing bass as your main instrument over a guitar which has a much larger range of notes, octaves for soloing and chordal opportunities?
      Your clearly a master soloist and musician. Conventional thinking would say a broader palette of range would give you more freedom for creativity.
      I'm sure you have a strong conviction for why you approach the bass the way you do and I'm interested in knowing what it is.
      I'm a bassist as well and I have had other musicians ask me this same question as I like soloing an playing melodies as well.

      @@SL-to4oh I think it's probably summed up easily using a couple of phrases in your more in-depth question here. I have no wish to ever be associated with "Conventional Thinking" and in my opinion, the only thing offering you less or more "freedom for creativity" is your imagination. I'm a musician who just happens to play the bass. Not a bass player who's trying to be a musician.
