  • Dr. Rex Marco, a prominent spine surgeon at UTHealth Houston, found a new purpose in his profession when a serious bicycle accident turned him into a patient. Now at TIRR Memorial Hermann for rehab, Dr. Marco's life-changing injury has given him a new perspective on the importance of hope. NBC’s Priscilla Thompson reports in this week’s Sunday Spotlight.

My mother has been a quadriplegic for over 20 years now and hope was not given whats so ever. Maybe some hope would have helped for all of us as it emotionally killed us all. We all went through depression seeing my mom like this.
I asked a nurse in rehab if there was hope as the doctors in the hospital said there was none. She said doctors cant give hope because of insurance reasons. If there is a chance your mother will ever walk they will tell you. If they believe she will never walk they can not offer hope because the patient can come back and sue saying they were either told they could walk again or have hope.... My mother just turned 80. Probably the oldest quad in the world. She is the most amazing woman. Love my mommy

This is a hopeful message ❤. I have a spinal cord injury and a classification as incomplete tetraplegia. Every day is a challenge, to educate people that they don't have any idea what is Spinal Cord Injury. My sincere respect and admiration for Dr. Marco.

I remember making a new patient appointment with Dr. Marco and I had to cancel it. The next time I called to reschedule it, I was told he’d had a horrible accident and wouldn’t be back. I had to Google it to find out the details on his Go Fund Me. So terribly sad. He was a renowned spine doctor. Glad to see he is able to pass on his knowledge by teaching.

Thank you for sharing his uplifting story - a prime example of why “bad” things happen to “good” people. He feels more connected to humanity today and is teaching more people. Beautiful.

Front wheel caliper breaks are a liability for those who are unfamiliar with with them.
I nearly did the same thing when I was a kid but the bikes speed was lower so I avoided injury

Was honestly hoping for some report on the advancements of severe spinal injuries. New research? New medicines? New technologies? Nope. Just the fundamental need for hope. 👍

Why does the black lady need to be reminded that her patients are human? Uhh duh. They are humans going through the toughest situation in their life, why do they need to be reminded of that

You’re overthinking it dude. Medical school probably makes them overemphasize intellect at the expense of seeing their patients as humans deserving of empathy and compassion.

I'm thinking the doctor himself came to realize this only after his accident. And from his own experience, becoming a patient himself, he learned. I love that he's doing this.
