There is a 4th way to measure with a set of calipers. On the back of the anvils, there is a notch that you can use to measure the shoulder depth of an item. Sometimes it is hard to get this measurement with the depth gauge measuring rule out of the bottom of the caliper. Once you measure a shoulder with the notch on the back, you'll see how much more accurate it is .

I just tried it, and that is awesome! I've been using calipers for the better part of 20 years and never knew about that. Thanks!

Macadamia, I didn't quite catch it from your description, so googled a little bit on that, and wow that's a new one to me as well as far as using the anvil to measure depth of a shoulder!

I've heard it called the "step" gauge. Nice to have since two of my three calipers are harbor freight "composite" and lack the depth pin.
