I can understand your frustration about the inconsistency of BPC inks. After all, I have a bottle of PA Fieldstone that bears no relationship to Shauna's sample that inspired me to order it. But if you tell them, they will send out a new bottle. I'm probably biased toward them because they're hometown guys for me. 😅

Came here to add a comment like this. One of the browns I ordered was different enough from the photo on their website that I sent them an email about it. They responded super quickly and gave me the option to have them send another bottle or to have a credit issued where I could order another ink for free. Since I knew I'd be buying more, I took the second option. Beyond the affordability and the quality of their ink, their customer service, shipping times and attention to packaging materials has kept me a big fan.

Great video Simone. I love how the scribo grigio and cherry sunburst look next to each other. Grigio reminds me a bit of Herbin Vert De Gris.

With BPC as much as I love them and they perform beautifully, you are correct about the inconsistency. I think it is something to worry about with all small ink makers and yes the same understanding should be given to all. I really like Anderillium too. I think you are right and it is a family owned business too. I am loving all the colors you swatched. The Diamine Cherry sunburst is beautiful. I love the way you format your swatches too.

Great point! It's just something I noticed that doesn't seem to be talked about.

Oh my gosh, I’m so late watching this swatching video! In regards to the amount of ink samples I sent being 7, I’d like to think I had forethought but it’s most likely random. 😹 I’m glad you enjoyed swatching these.
I give Birmingham Pen Co a lot of grace because I’ve been buying from them for so long and I love their evolution. I also give grace to most companies, because they are rarely setting out to damage the customer. In the cases where there are shady things knowingly going on, I will avoid the company altogether.
The Everlasting inks have such weird performance. I’m sure it has something to do with being water-resistant but I can’t figure out what. Thank you for sharing! 🤘🏼😸🧡🖋

This is what I have heard from so many people - and I think that's totally fine. I'm glad they exist in this ink space so we get to experience fun handmade inks.

Absolutely there is a consistency problem with the Birmingham inks. My samples did not match what I got in the bottles. I was able to forgive because they were close enough for my purposes, which was to write with wet light coloured inks. No one else has really pulled that off yet. I will be buying the mixing bottles next and make my own colours from their mixing instructions. That way I can control the consistency myself. I have a theory on the surfactant they are using. Seems closer to propylene glycol than what I suspect White Lightening to be, which is basically Kodak Photo Flo. All conjecture on my part based on some personal experiments and reddit deep dives. Blah blah blah.

BPC can be a tad inconsistent from what their website shows, but the price is so good and I have a good experience 95% of the time, that I've found it worth it and I have TONS of their inks. Now I want to try Anderillium!

I think the Diamine cherry sunburst ink is named after the guitar style?

Just to update the current situation on Birmingham pen co's business structure. They seem to be making inks daily, and orders are shipped within 2 days. Any order I've placed on a business day (for inks only) has gone out within 24 hours. (I've ordered several times in the last couple months and started a "buying group" so that more of us could try them).
I think the difference in expectation between Anderillium vs. BPC, whether justified or not, possibly comes from the fact that Anderillium is sold via retailers, which in U.S. mindsets, makes them a larger company with an international presence, rather than a local, new start-up ink company. Again, this may be unfair, due to our lack of knowledge about Anderillium.

I have a lot of Birmingham inks. So far I’ve only been disappointed with 2. One ink I wasn’t as excited about was not surprising. I am not sure if it’s supposed to be an actual ink. Haha. It’s Railroad Worm. I was just curious if it’s the fluorescent component that they used in their inks and yes, it seems to be. I was trying to mix a retired color. Railroad Worm is just invisible on its own. But I guess if you like to play, it’s something to play with.
Also “Goldfish” was just too pale and watery for me. I may try it in one more pen, but the one I used was a wet writer and it’s still not great. I added another color to it to make it legible.
If you look on the ink recipes, some inks are: x ink with 10 parts of diluent. I would hold out and buy the diluent separately for those. Just get the concentrated color. And one that you swatched, Dewberry, is a color you can get with mixing. I was able to make that color with some of my Atomic Inks.
I LOVE 💚 Sugar Kelp 🫒💛🧡. If you look up the recipe to that, you’ll see it has a lot of an orange ink and some sheening green ink as the mix. It looks soooo good in a nib on tomoe River paper. I have it currently in a Pilot Explorer with M nib and I have refilled my pen already. I think it’s one of my top favorite inks, but I’ll also experiment with adding other colors to it.
Wetness: I have a whole set of Atomic inks Everlasting Colors, and I have several of their traditional line. Cold Steel is traditional ink and it’s super wet. However, I use it in my very dry finicky pens (Kaweco Sport) it works well.
I have not felt the Everlasting inks are too wet, but I’m still experimenting. Inland Teal is my favorite. But I can also mix that with my Naples and Hibiscus? (I had gotten Inland Teal, first). The Everlasting inks are not as saturated in color as DeAtramentis Document inks. So the range of colors you get can be more muted and of a watercolor effect. But they are much easier to clean out. If you want super intense Everlasting Inks, not sure if they have any.
Sheeners. The only one I have is Voltaic Arc. I won that one and don’t use it much. But I have used it to mix some great olive greens by adding it to Sunburst.
I do very much wish they sold samples. One thing they do is change the formula and recycle some of the old names. This was shown by other you tubers. Old/new formulas. That’s not a practice I care for. I wouldn’t mind if the colors are very close.
