  • Learn with me on this stressful journey of replacing my Thermostat.
Do you even need to replace a broken thermostat?.. Yes!
If your engine is not running at the correct temperature it will damage your engine! Make sure your engine is running as well as possible!
I am not sponsored by Carista or by FusionOBD, they are just the combination that I use when trying to diagnose running issues with vehicles that are missing or have broken gauges. I'm sure there are other options out there to gain the same information.
Merry Christmas and I wish you all a very happy new year!
    Tom

As you said it could be better to set the front in service mode. I worked at a VW dealer (05-10) and if i remember right its is 32 screws to put the front in service mode.

That is 100% what I should have done! It actually wasn’t that hard to get your hands near it, but it’s completely blind so you’re just guessing where the bottom bolt goes.

Your supposed to give the thermostat a half turn into the plastic housing mate, theres 2 plastic tabs that catch onto the top of the thermostat as you twist it. Good chance the head of your thermostat can move in the housing or pressure could move it

This engine didn’t have any tabs or locking mechanism unfortunately, the pressure of the housing against the o-ring and block secure the stat in place, when removing the housing the stat stayed in the block and I had to hook it out with a pick

What year is your van ? I have a T5 and carista only lists T5.1
I am about to start chasing exactly same faults. Poss boost leak and vans not getting hot.

Mine is an 07, I can’t ever remember checking if the carista app actually works or not, I’ve left it in a friends car but I’ll have it back this weekend so I’ll get back to you.

What made you realise it was running to cool
Was the heater not getting hot . You might find the bolt and tools when you take the under trays off .
    I have a 2012 2.0Tdi
With no temperature gauge . Got me thinking should check I’ve got a dongle with Cristal app never thought could check with that . Have cam bus interface on the radio head unit but doesn’t show coolant . temp

I was actually chasing a boost leak and was using the app for the boost data and noticed the van never getting up to temp, it was a luck thing more than anything, I have no idea how long the thermostat had been stuck open for before that.
My van doesn’t have any undertrays so Unfortunatly that wouldn’t have helped, the bolt is just in an incredibly awkward position, however with the front end off it would take seconds to do, but live and learn I guess.
I think it’s worth checking the temp to make sure, it might be my imagination but I’m sure that since changing the stat and getting the correct temperatures my engine runs more quietly too!

Did the heater blowers in the cab still blow warm air in spite of the low engine temps? Would you have still changed the thermostat if they weren't? @@TeeeTV

@@MarkFargethey blew ‘warm’ air for sure but I did notice that if it’s below zero outside I never really got warm in the van, at the time I put it down to bad door seals or something, it’s much hotter now though and haven’t noticed feeling cold in the van again
