I’m so glad I came to the comments. I adore this song. Of the whole album, this instantly grabbed me, but it didn’t seem so popular in my circles. For me this feels original. The verses, modern, sounds like Ice Spice or in that modern arena, and the chorus, quintessentially Kylie.

People might be surprised to know that my favourite singer of all time, that i would easily spend HUNDREDS of dollars to watch live - is Kylie Minogue. This is because Kylie Minogue is not a showboater: she is not known for her vocal range like Mariah Carey or Ariana Grande, her soulfulness like Whitney or Jasmine Sullivan, her complex harmonies and artistic layering of voices like Brandy, or technical prowess like Kelly Clarkson or Christina Aguilera. She doesnt have a distinctive timbre to speak of like Sia or Cyndi Lauper, or a signature song-writing style like Taylor Swift or Adele.
Rather, she knows whats her wheelhouse and that is to do POP MUSIC and to DO IT WELL. Yet every single album that she throws out is remarkable different yet incredibly well-produced and you know that it is a Kylie Minogue production because her musical identity is just imprinted all over her music. Her recent album Tension (2023) is so different from her disco album Disco (2020) which is to date the best disco album in the last 20 years, which is also so different from the dance pop album Aphrodite (2010) based on the theme of spiritual, romantic love which is also remarkably different from her pop album Body Language (2003) which is a darker, grittier exploration on flirtation and sex.
It is easy to dismiss her vocals as nothing special but a closer examination of her music revealed careful thought in how she plays with the textures of her voice to create a lighter airy effect to bring about a sense of sensuality, and how she switches to “diaphragm singing” to create a deeper, firmer texture. She once mentioned that her favourite singer is Blossom Dearie who is considered to be a “singer’s singer” and the influences of Dearie on Kylie can be clearly seen in the musical phrasings she does, the lack of embellishments, the playful airy takes on songs etc.
Kylie songs while never complicated, all possess a distinctive melodic line which can work when transposed as a piano piece. Her songs all possess a gay sensibility that to me, represents the best of what gay culture can be if it chooses to work on eradicating its toxic traits. She sings all her songs live while performing complex chereography and unlike Katy Perry, she doesnt overreach and give herself rangy melodic lines such that she cant perform her songs lol. Rather, all her songs were composed such that she can deliver it, and deliver it well. I mean, just listening to her production on the song “Hands” on her latest album, I am wowed by the variations of melodic lines, that Brandyesque voice harmonies, the transition from sensual rap to the chorus etc. Kylie Minogue has been in the pop industry since the 1980s and the fact that her NEW MUSIC is still going viral speaks to her success in speaking to new generations, her ability to grow and adapt to emerging musical trends and her humility in approaching music.
