    As a Brit / European, I will try to explain to Americans. Football is steeped in history and tradition, these teams were created by the working class from within their cities hundreds of years ago. Families and generations of people grew up supporting their local teams, it is not just a team but almost a religion.
    During the years, teams would have rivals from other teams in the same city or neighbouring cities, sometimes something completely different. This gives bragging rights to the team who beats the other. Usually, these are called "Derbies", the biggest ones around the world are
    Liverpool vs Man United, (The Northwest Derby)
    Arsenal vs Tottenham (North London Derby)
    AC Milan vs Inter Milan (Milan Derby)
    Real Madrid vs Barcelona (El Clasico)
    Bayern vs Dortmund (Der Klassiker)
    Celtic vs Rangers (The Old Firm Derby)
    Boca Juniors vs River Plate (The Superclásico)..and more.
    The home crowds are sometimes referred to as the "12th Man" (matches are 11vs11) because they can have an influence in the game by creating a hostile atmosphere for the opposition team to make them nervous. But also chanting aka war chants and songs are a way of showing support for your team and lifting them up.
    Sadly, I think this is hard for the MLS because my understanding most teams are franchises? They are missing the core and heart of what makes a football club.

    • @Bueraner
      @Bueraner Před rokem +2

      Bayern vs Dortmund is NOT a Derby. The so called "Klassiker" is just an invented marketing slogan by the DFL (League association). Relevant Derbies of the two mentioned teams would be Bayern vs 1860 or Dortmund vs Schalke

    "Ultras - our way of life" .. great videos about Ultras

  • @OlamRii
    @OlamRii Před 2 lety +79

    Hi mate I’m a big fan of yours so I’m going to bombard you with info here starting with the clubs in the video
    1. Millwall - Formed by Scottish Dockers on the isle of Dogs they have a pretty terrible reputation in the UK for being especially Violent even in the 70s and 80s when the violence was at its worst hence the “no one likes us” they are also historically Right Wing
    ( mostly liked by supporters of my own club despite huge differences in views and politics as we share a common enemy and they offered to let us use their ground when ours was sold by a corrupt owner)
    2. Marseille- They are arguably the most supported club in France and regularly have huge attendances , their fan base tends to swing to the left politically
    3. Napoli or Naples in English - Incredibly well supported club however have not been successful trophy wise in their history they were at their best when Diego Maradona( one of the best players of all time) played for them and they won a few trophies, Naples as a city has a bad reputation for crime (Mafia) and is seen by the North of Italy (where all the wealth is ) as either the last city of the first world or the first city of the third world, it’s not uncommon for Napoli supporters to be welcomed with signs that say things like “Welcome to Italy” when playing northern teams , they don’t really lean anyway politically.
    4. PSG- they have been dominant in recent times due to Middle Eastern owners pumping lots of money in however they were always well supported as they don’t really lean either way politically compared to other Paris teams who’s fan bases tend to heavily right and left.
    5.Boca Juniors- they were singing about River plate their arch rivals and fellow Buenos Aires based team , Boca being mostly Left Wing and River being to the Right.
    6. West Ham- Formed in East London by ironworks workers (hence the Hammers in the club crest) their main rivals are Millwall the first clip , however unlike Millwall they don’t really lean in any political direction.
    7. Ajax- the most dominant team in Dutch football history , huge fan base and an a academy that consistently produces some of the best players to ever play , I don’t know which way they lean politically however they were formed in a Jewish area and have a close friendship with Tottenham another club with Jewish heritage.
    8. Celtic- where to start ? Huge fan base great atmosphere and they are one half of the greatest sporting rivalry in Football , The Glasgow derby(Celtic Vs Rangers) Celtic were formed by Irish immigrants and whatever Celtics viewpoint is Rangers (Protestant) is the opposite, Brexit, Israel/Palestine , Scottish independence, Ireland , the list is endless the hatred is at a level that nothing else comes close to in football, it’s Religious , Ethnic ,political all rolled into two clubs in one city.
    9. Panathanikos- One of the biggest clubs in Greece, with a huge fan base their rivals are fellow Athens based Olympiacos ,Panathanikos historically were the club of the middle and upper classes and their rivals the working class however now days those lines are pretty blurred and both clubs have fans all across Greece.
    10. San Lorenzo- Formed by a Catholic priest who when seeing some young lads playing football in the street saw one almost knocked over by a tram and told them they could play in the church grounds if they came to Sunday Mass, like Boca juniors and River plate they are also located in Buenos Aires and are also the club the Pope supports! .
    Something that tends to confuse Most Americans with Football is that while the sport is fantastic it’s less about the sport and more about representing your Area/ City/ Region and religion/Class /Ethnicity or political leaning while this isn’t as much of the case anymore it’s very much imprinted into the soul of clubs and it’s local fanbases, as in they could play anything and we’d still turn up !
    Regional differences are huge not just linguistically as sometimes it’s almost a different language in some countries but because some nations only unified in the 1800s Italy for example in 1861 the same year your civil war started.
    One last thing I wanted to add was I’d like you to watch a video about my own clubs recent struggles ( you don’t need to upload it as I’m sure no one would care ) it’s called “ 20 Remarkable years at Brighton and Hove Albion” it’s on the clubs official CZcams page it might give you some insight into how connected we are with our local teams.

    Marsaille's "Aux armes" is a reference to the Marsaillaise, the french national anthem. It was written as a marching song for the volunteers from the region during the French Revolution, and yes, it is quite bloodthirsty. It begins with the line "aux armes, citoyens" ("to arms, citizens").
    The chant has been adapted by a few other left-leaning clubs, like St. Pauli from Germany.

    Ultras' are the top-level, hardcore fans of football and basketball in Europe and South America, many of the ultras, especially in Eastern Europe, attached to football clubs, have para military and political affiliations, they are the next level up from the football "hooligan"😎🏹🙏

      @@KingBoomer I second that. Basketball fans are another level of wild. Specially in the Balkans, Greece and Turkey. Back in the 80's they used to throw all sort of stuff to the ground, coins, screws, eventually the own arena chairs when things didn't go their way...they are not so savage nowadays but same passionate neverthless.

    So the smoke and fire your referring too is flares and smoke bombs. A lot of country in Europe and South America use them as they are allowed. In the uk where I am from these are banned from stadiums because of the trouble we have and what’s happened in the past. Same as like how’s fans in the uk can not sit with each other because of the trouble we have. Hope that helps

    You said it's like a tribal chant, but it's not _like_ one, it _is_ a tribal chant!
    Football is like a bit of a special zone in society where people can act in those kinds of ways that would be frowned upon in the rest of life. And there will be some times when people overstep the mark and have clashes with the opposition fans, but so long as everyone stays the right side of the line it's a good way of people letting off steam and getting it out of their system. It serves a useful social purpose.
    ('Ultras' is the word for the hard-core gangs who support particular teams by the way. Well, nominally support, in that they turn up primarily for the violence to fight the ultras from the other team, and the football is just an excuse for them! Only a very small percentage of fans, but some teams are more notorious than others.)
