The BMW E34 is the third generation of the BMW 5 Series, which was produced from November 2, 1987, until 1996. Initially launched as a sedan in January 1988, the E34 also saw a "Touring" station wagon (estate) body style added in September 1992, a first for the 5 Series. BMW replaced the E34 with the E39 5 Series in December 1995, although E34 Touring models remained in production until June 1996.
The E34 generation marked the first time all-wheel drive was incorporated into the 5 Series with the 525iX, and the first V8 engine to be used in a 5 Series. The E34 also saw the introduction of stability control (ASC), traction control (ASC+T) a 6-speed manual transmission and adjustable damping (EDC) to the 5 Series range.
There was an unusually large range of engines fitted over its lifetime as nine different engine families were used. These consisted of straight-four, straight-six and V8 engines.
The E34 M5 is powered by the S38 straight-six engine and was produced in sedan and wagon body styles.

Back in the day when even the "slow" 520i sounded good with a 6-cylinder motor and manual box for lots of RWD fun! Try doing anything like that in a modern 520i/d No chance :-( The sound of that S38 motor give me shivers! We must preserve these wonderful machines at all costs!
Exactly... And back then, even the ordinary versions of the E34 could have been ordered with optional limited slip differentials straight from the factory (at least in Europe, it was possible). Nowadays, only the M cars have LSD :/
This is not a stock system. It is straigth piped in the video. The original street legal system sounds nothing like this.

@@vladniculita4176 I like the new 5 series very much, but I miss the fact that the old ones had 6 cylinder engines even on low specs like the 520i. I also miss the manual transmission option on all engines, and the availability of limited slip differentials on the non-M versions. Sure, those things would nowadays be unprofitable for BMW, or even impossible to sell due to regulations. But, just because we miss all those things doesn't mean we hate the new models!

I never seen 1.8, 520 six cylinder was the most common model in europe, it wasn't that expensive, in the USA only the most expensive models were sold because they were targeting different customers.

The 525i driver didn't even wait for the engine to heat up first, before revving the absolute nutsack off the car
and the crazy thing is the engines hold on with that aggresion! so cool engines!

It was a minor temp gauge malfunction, that happened earlier that day. Engine as well as the rest of the car is and was maintained in a pristine condition. Think before You comment.

I had a 520i M50 loved the car, it wasn't the fastest but the sound of bmws 6 cylinder won me over.
It was a metallic red 1995 car
I remember these cars brand new, from the 518i to the M5, 1989 - entering the M4 motorway at 120mph hitting 155mph in no time at all. All very illegal in the U.K. at the time but no speed cameras back then and I was an apprentice mechanic and passenger. The most special thing about a quality car back in the day compared to a new new one today is the new car smell. Today they smell of different plastics and glues, back then it was leather, wool carpeting a new car smelt like nothing else and very special, not like you just unboxed a food blender.
Even today the e34 e39 has that bmw smell that you cant find in any other car. It is the best quality fabrics, leather insulation they used to build these cars.

That 2.0 E34 is sweet. I'm on my 5th vintage 5er... been driving them and/or a tii or E30 or various SAABs now since '97.

watched this video and understood a few criteria required to shoot bmw acceleration:
- empty fuel tank
- broken ESP / ABS
- not warmed up engine
- tightened parking brake
EMPTY fuel tank is problem of dashboard its not true
I'm missing the 525i with 192HP that I personally owned one for over 10 years and I think was the most common 525i and I would even say for the e34 overall. The 12 valve version with 170HP was very rare as it was only available the first two years of the 525i engines. (btw. 125KW=170HP, not 168)

Года два назад m5 хотел сделать из своей 525i , еë родной мотор умер, прошлый хозяин заливал плохое масло и редко его менял, масло каналы забились и прямо на ходу мотор заклинило. Я решил пусть стоит в гараже до лучших времён, но в один момент в одном объявлении на сайте я увидел ,что продают s38b36 вместе с коробкой передач на 6 ступеней и редуктором за 1200$ , удивительно, но они были в очень хорошем состоянии, даже когда я их разобрал не было ни единого намёка на неисправность и загрязнение, не было трещин и сколов, всё было отлично... И вот в гараже уже 2года стоит пылится моя 525i и мотор вместе коробкой от m5😂😂😂

most 525is actually had M50B25s which are 189hp so including the M20B25 525i version is a little unfair
M50B25 192hp
12v is 178hp and 24v is 192hp same is with 535i it has 211hp and 2.0 24v is 150hp and 2.0 12v is 136hp.

One thing that could have been more interesting for the video is to make a comparison between the E34 phase 1 and phase 2, because they do not have the same engine block and therefore not the same power as the phase 1 have m20 and m30 motors, while phase 2 have m50 and m60 motors
M60 is the V8 which was featured in the video
If I remeber correctly there were two iterations of the 525, it changed about 1990, think it went from a 12v around 170bhp, to a 24v with 192bhp. I had a 520 and the later 525, I think the 0-60 times were just under 11 and 9 seconds repectively. This was UK specs, with manual gearboxes... To cause more confusion there was also a 6 cylinder 530 until about 1990, and VANOS added to the 525 (and maybe others) later on which may have added some extra performance...
You're missing the M20 models. The M20B20 E34 is probably slower than the 518i due to being heavier and having longer gearing. It's like watching a rock erode.
S38B38 is also missing

The M20 was covered but only as the 525i.

If the last car's acceleration test was taken in Gauteng South Africa as suggested by the number plate, it could be much better done. There is about a 17% power loss at Joburg's altitude compared to at the coast.

It is quite pointless to put up revving sounds of all the different versions of engines when some are with aftermarket loud exhaust and others are without. I know this sounds lame but they should have been stock so it is easier to compare them. Also there are cars here with both automatic and manual gearboxes and as we all know the autos are slower on these cars. With that said the 535i sounds the sweetest and the M5 by far the coolest. ;-)
This is great collection, but e34 m5 has special place in the hearts and minds of enthusiast around the world 🌍. Bmw fans from New York City man.

I’m glad the car is slow. I use a carbon intake so I can at least enjoy the induction sounds the car makes. Like the M5 driving in the tunnel. Though he was twice as fast, the car is still just as fun.

5:09 white M5 is in South Africa. Plates end in GP which stands for Gauteng Province. So probably filmed somewhere around Johannesburg or Pretoria.

If you are looking only at standing starts then yes. But from a roll a 525i auto will easily win against a 520i manual. 42hp more is quite a lot!

Comparing a M50 Vanos 520i to a M20 525i is hardly a reasonable comparison. The M50 engine is far superior, what does a M50 525i do?
