I gotta say bro, you sound exactly like Kip from Napoleon Dynamite. And you look like him a bit too. No disrespect AT ALL. I actually love that guy! Peace
Smozoma is an absolute legend in the NHL 94 community. He's donated countless hours to help build and support the NHL 94 online community.
Best hockey game ever.
I wish there was an option to play with the original rosters
Same! I think the problem is getting the rights to the players since they're no longer active NHLPA players.
My guess the extra skin colors is because they’re not working with the original engine so if they wanted a new skin tone, they can just make a new sprite sheet and not worry about hardware limitations. Plus 2020s, let’s be inclusive here.
From what I understand now a couple years later, it's some kind of hybrid system, where they in fact are using the original game engine from a ROM file, but it runs in a special emulator called "Arsenal" that can intercept and modify the data and graphics during gameplay. The new rosters aren't even stored in the ROM, they're in a separate file (unlike our community roster updates for emulators, which have all the updated player data right in the ROM). Like you mention, I guess they found a way to swap the palette for individual sprites, or assign different sprites, based on a tag that's included in their external player list (the skin tone value ranges from 0-3). I hope I didn't say something in the video that made it sound like this wasn't a neat and welcome feature. Unfortunately we don't know how to add this feature to our community updates with a ROM-based mod.
Is the sound any different? I used to remember the crowd could get really loud if there was lots of hits and saves in a short amount of time. Haven’t really noticed it in the rewind version.
The sound should be exactly the same, other than the problem with the sound being delayed about 200ms due to some kind of bug with how sound is processed. Maybe the delay/disconnect between what you see and what you hear is making the crowd seem less excited? It's possible they may have adjusted the crowd's behaviour but I don't know why they would bother to do that.
Did they take out blood and fighting?
Blood and fighting were taken out in the original NHL'94 and were not restored in this version
Mine seems different on the ps4 more pixelated 🤔
Hm that's odd.. It should be identical. Maybe it's a illusion due to playing Rewind on a bigger TV screen than where you watched this video?
@@NHL94Community yeah it could be but my original nhl 94 on mega drive looks better.
Maybe to do with HD
@@chrisdonovan1981 ok yeah the old signal will be scaled up by your TV which will blur the edges of the pixels. The new game's signal is high def to begin with so it preserves the pixelation (the game's original resolution is roughly 240p). So it's a trade-off between blurry(original) or pixelated(modern).
@@NHL94Community I guess that's why the game has a border aswell to Handle pixels slightly better rather than full screen on hd tv
