13 Fishing Spinning Reels. I'm Told They Suck?

  • The results are in! For 4 months I've been fishing this combo using a variety of baits and line. Do they suck? 13 Fishing is one of my favorite brands, but I gave this an honest, non bias shot.

    You are a fishing legend :) Over here, Jarvis Walker has the same rap, but the yellow tip rod and reel I have had for 8 years now and never had an issue. Great review and landing that Peacock Bass is all the proof needed. Well done Joe!

      HAHA Thanks Larry! In my own mind at least LOL. People have been telling me how bad they are for years. I finally had to try it out for myself. So far so good. I think sometimes a brand just gets a bad rep and people will take that stance, even though they never tried it. Ah, the internet. And I just wanted to show that peacock again. Man that was fun! LOL

    Another great video Joe. Definitely one of the best (if not The best) reel review videos I have seen! I like that you showed it in action with fish on the line over a descent amount if time, not just a single trip. Keep it up man. I can't wait to see more reel reviews in the future. Thanks Paul! I'm not sure how people can give a true review of a product, especially something like a reel, with just one day of use. Bada bass bada bing! Good job out there with that gear fishing legend!👊💥🎣
    That’s one of the best spinning reviews I’ve watched, the importance of trying it without the braided line to see how it acts on the spool can’t be overlooked. And the drag test was sweet! Loved seeing that peacock bass catch a second time around. For that price point and right off the shelf, that’s an impressive combo.
    I like that you also approached it with different presentations too. Good to see your buddy throwing mono on it with the same results.

      Thanks Joe! Like you, I try to give honest and unbiased feedback. I was almost a little nervous doing this one because I am such a big fan of 13 Fishing. But, if it failed, I would've shown it. Thats why I wanted to try different line, baits and techniques. People know I like that brand and I wanted my review to be as honest and fair as possible. I prefer a bait caster most of the time but I always carry a spinning rod with me when I go out fishing. Hey Joe. I don't have issues with my 13Fishing spinning reel. I own one of their ultra-light reels on a 7 foot Defy light action rod. Never had the line wrap behind the spool. It might be because I use braid on it. Just bought the same combo for my nephew in Connecticut. Heard they had a sale on them a Dick's this weekend. Appreciate the video. I didn't get this reel/ rod combo but a Kalon A/Defy combo was 40% off here so I picked it up. Couldn't find anything on that specific reel, but was nice to at least come across your experience with another one of their spinning reels.
    To be honest, I've been spending the last couple of months looking for gear (I'm trying to get back into fishing) and there isn't a rod or reel out there that doesn't have a bunch of people complaining about it, at least not one I could find. Which is basically the case in any product space, but fishing seems particularly bad. Any rod there is, from $30 all the way up to $300, $400 has a concerning amount of "Piece of junk, snapped after a few trips" reviews on it. I feel like you need to ignore reviews for the most part, at least as far as budget/beginner gear is concerned.

      You are 100% right about the review thing. Seems everyone is an expert on everything. And of course, all brands have their champions and their haters. I have always been a big fan of 13. But I’m the first to admit that not everything they make is gold. I think especially in the budget lines, they are a really good option. I still use this combo in my regular rotation and still has yet to “fall apart” or “snap”. Thank you for the comment! Means I’m doing something right! lol good luck and tight lines 👊🏻

    I had one of the first series of 13 Fishing Creed GT's .. I actually still have it. I use it sparingly because it does in fact eat the line if you are not paying close attention. I put a finger down the insure the line is going on the spool. I warn any of my fishing partners trying to use it. They will still get had by it. I was really disappointed in 13 with that reel.
    I am sure by now they have corrected the issue but man that first bunch of spinning reel was a bad hit to their reputation.

    I have 7 13 fishing spinning reels, and have had no issues with them. I bet most of the reviews are user error. My guess the issue with the line getting up under the spool is using too light of lures for how they have their rig set up. I know I used to try throwing crappie baits on a bass spinning set up and only had headaches.

Luckily, 13 fishing had nice customer service and sent me the spare parts within a week. I’ve used it just about ever weekend since and now the drag on it has gone bad. Perhaps it’s just my reel. Hey thanks man! Appreciate your comment. This may be a long response LOL
      I am huge fan of 13 Fishing, I have bunch of their gear. As far as rods go, I have the FATE rod in this video, a couple of the DEFY Black, 2 Omen Black, 1 Omen Gold, and a DEFY Silver. The difference is basically the quality of the components. I really love my Omen rods. I think the DEFY rods are the some of the best budget friendly rods on the market.
      More to your trout rod question: My Omen gold and Defy silver are both Ultra Light rods. I believe the gold is actually marketed for trout and panfish. I like it but I am not sure it fits the price point. The defy silver is actually a hell of a rod and only runs about $40. Might be a good call for trout. I am no expert on that tho. I dont have trout down here in Florida.
      The only light power rod I own is a st Croix panfish rod and I do not recommend it. Overpriced and not nearly as sensitive as others on the market.

      @@ParabellumFishing I've heard about St Croix rods blowing up for no apparent reason. I didn't really believe it until it happened to me. They are generally pretty good at replacing rods but that didn't make me feel better when I was out on the lake fishing and it snapped, that ruined my day. I will just stick with fiberglass rods from now on (unless its a fly rod or travel rod). I have never broken a glass rod. confidence is everything!

    I just bought a 13 combo at Walmart for $65. It's a source f1 and I'm about to try a 6lb high vis line hoping to catch pan fish on it but the pole says that you need a 3/16 - 5/8oz lure on it. I only have 1/32, 1/16, and 1/8 Oz jigs for lures. Should I keep it or return it for an ultralight?

    • @ParabellumFishing
      @ParabellumFishing  Před rokem

      My Walmart doesn’t have any 13 gear! That’s pretty cool yours does. Sounds like the rod may be a bit stiff for what you are looking for. You’ll still be able to use it with lighter lures but may lose some casting distance. And if the rod is too stiff, it may overpower the smaller panfish, so less of a “fight”. If they have an Ultralight option, that would certainly better suit those smaller jig heads. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching 👊🏻

    I'm definitely not an expert on spinning reels at all I don't use them very often. I have had the issue on several different reels where the line gets wrapped up inside the reel and I didn't think it was specific to the reel itself but I thought it was just something that can happen to all spinning reels. Probably user error!

    • @ParabellumFishing
      @ParabellumFishing  Před 2 lety +1

      I think in a lot of cases, it is user error. I’m also no expert but reeling in loose line will almost always cause that, no matter the brand. I did have a quantum reel that did that to me a lot. I was new and looking back, I probably had the line on backwards. Lol. Thanks man! 👊🏻

    Not too piss on anyone but, 90% of people who fish spinning reels don’t know a good one from a bad one! They pickup a new reel, spin it fast, let it stop and proclaim that’s a smooth reel!
    To me, spinning reels needed to pass two tests, first, it needed to have a very smooth drag, second it needed good gearing!
    Metal gearing, yes bearings are important, ball bearings, not plastic, not nylon!
    When you get real metal gearing, real ball bearings, and a good drag, it costs.
    A metal frame and spool would be preferable.
    Let me say this, fishing reels can be the biggest rip off in the fishing industry, I have always been very anal about maintaining my reels, before my stroke, I would deep clean my reels one a year in winter when the fishing was slow, and you would be surprised by how similar reels are inside, people are paying high prices for the name, not performance.
    Drag and metal gearing, drag gets you more fish, metal gearing gets you reel durability!
    I’ve always been a person who tries to spend as little as possible on equipment, but get the most bang for my Buck, so I’m not a equipment snob!

    • @ParabellumFishing
      @ParabellumFishing  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey I admit it, I am a gear snob! Lol. Fishing is really the only thing I spend my money on, and I spend! But I agree with you. I pay for the metal over the plastic. I pay for the carbon drag over the felt. And sometimes I admit, I pay for the name. But I’ve gone the cheap, no name, route and the hassles that come with it aren’t worth it to me. I don’t get as much time fishing as I’d like so I want to fish, not mess with the equipment failures. As for this reel, for the price I am very satisfied. It’s the cheapest combo I own but it works very well. And that with zero maintenance. Always feel welcome to let it out on my page buddy. I appreciate the honesty and don’t think your “pissing” on anyone. And if someone doesn’t like it, that’s what the internet is for lol. Take care bro! 👊🏻
