Floating amidst the dense greenery of the Mekong Delta, Anchor House stands as a serene sanctuary, a place where the noise of the world fades into the rustling of leaves and the gentle flow of the nearby river. The structure, a testament to monastic minimalism, is an exquisite retreat designed to harmonize with its natural surroundings. Tucked away in a secluded patch of jungle, the concrete hull of the house seems almost to disappear into the verdant foliage that surrounds it. The sail-angled roof, resembling the billowing sails of a ship, shields the dwelling from the elements, providing both protection and a symbolic connection to the journey of life.
The house's open, graceful form invites nature to become a part of the living space, blurring the boundaries between the interior and the exterior. The austere interiors, finished in raw materials like wood and untreated concrete, exude a sense of simplicity and calm. The internal mezzanine, exposed terrace, and glass-encased lavatory create a multi-layered experience, where each space offers a different perspective on the surrounding environment. Whether one chooses to bathe in the inspiration provided by the natural world or retreat into the comforting embrace of simplicity, Anchor House offers a space to reflect, rejuvenate, and reconnect with the essential.
This retreat is the chosen home of an artist with a sensitive soul, someone who has spent a lifetime exploring the beauty of existence and now seeks solace in the quiet rhythms of nature. Having seen all that life has to offer, they have turned away from the distractions of the city, longing for a place that fulfills their daily needs while allowing them to engage with the world on their terms. Here, in this minimalist haven, they find the perfect balance between solitude and connection, between inspiration and introspection.
Despite its simplicity, Anchor House is meticulously designed to support a thoughtful and intentional way of living. With a total floor area of approximately 160 square meters, every function has been carefully considered and logically arranged. The open spaces are curated to draw in the elements, with wooden divides framing views of the towering trees and allowing the breeze to flow freely through the house. The scents of nature, the play of light during dawn and dusk - all of these are integral to the experience of living in this home. It is a place for solitary reflection, where one can lose themselves in thought or art, but it also offers spaces for hospitality and kinship, where friends and family can gather and share in the tranquility.
Nestled behind the wooden façade is a cabin that includes a guest kitchen and bedroom, a thoughtful addition that ensures visitors are always welcome. The house is a place of retreat but not isolation, a home that encourages connection with others as well as with the self. In a region where the climate can be harsh, with intense downpours during the wet season and sweltering heat during the dry season, Anchor House is a fortress against the elements. The extended roof provides shelter, while the design allows for ample airflow, ensuring that the interior remains cool and comfortable no matter the weather.
The interiors are purposefully minimal, with a focus on decluttering the mind as much as the space. The raw finishings of wood and concrete are not just aesthetic choices but a statement of intent - this is a place where the unnecessary falls away, leaving only what is essential. The simplicity of the design creates a space that is free from distraction, allowing the mind to wander and the spirit to rest.
At Anchor House, every moment is an opportunity to reconnect with the earth and oneself. Whether it’s watching the play of light on the leaves, listening to the rain as it taps against the roof, or simply sitting in silence, this is a home that transports its inhabitants to places of poetic imagination, introspection, and peace. In the heart of the jungle, amidst the sights and sounds of nature, the artist has found their sanctuary - a place where they can live fully, simply, and beautifully.
