9:35 If you thought the undead giant was out of place, let me explain something. In the original campaign, the group discovered an abandoned tribal home of giants in the mountains. Although there was signs of conflict, there were no bodies. When you realiez that Delilah is a necromancer, you understand how they managed to solve their worker shortage.
One thing to remember is that Percy is the one that made the first gun in this world. So when he holds the gun up in front of people they usually have no idea what it is, or whats coming.
About keeping the sister alive: Keeping the crown to the origin bloodline of rulers was a common thing in medieval times. Even if someone conquered the land having the name tag attachted to the crown saved reputation or was used for having a marionette king ruling the land. So there is reason behind that from a real life point of view.
Wow, I thought maybe they were keeping her as a pseudo daughter to uphold this image to outsiders as being a respectable loving family and to fill the void of not having children of their own like what Lady Dimitrescu did to the three women who would become the Dimitrescu Daughters in _Resident Evil: Village_ or The Countess with the pale blonde children in _American Horror Story: Hotel._
@@rogue7723 I mean...they were also doing that in the campaign. Kinda. She was concidered " family"... but they also tortured her psychologically and physically in the time she was with them. So they weren't entirely...nice to her.
So about Vex and Vax: I think it's less that Keyleth is becoming an important "woman" to Vax or about jealousy, and more about the twin's past. Without giving up any spoilers, they have been together their whole lives and have always depended on each other, so I think Vex is acting out because she is super protective of her brother, and is afraid that someone might put a wedge between the two of them. Also, I think that moment about "courage" and "stupidity" really shows the core difference between the twins - Vax is more willing to put himself out there and be vulnerable with others, while Vex is much more closed off and tries to be rational and pragmatic
It's probably a mix of the "Losing Vax to another waman" and the idea that he is stepping away from the golden rule of only being loyal and attached to each other since everybody else inevitably fails them
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Vex is definitely scared she might lose Vax as irrational as it may seem. Vax is all she's ever had. Laura talked about this during the watch party. Also if you listen to or read Kith and Kin you will truly understand how close they are. If we had traveled a mile in Vex's shoes we'd probably feel the same way.
Every time I see that scene with the little girl excited that she "won a prize", it breaks my heart. There's just something exceptionally evil about hurting people who can't even understand you're hurting them 😢 And to do all that not for any practical reason, but just as a warning to your enemies? Fuck the Briarwoods.
It was done not just as a warning to VM, but as a warning to the towns folk that if you associate or help these people… your fate is the same Also, you may have missed it but you can hear the swinging of the ropes during the credits
😂 this so reminds us of our Batman livestreams where doors were our worst enemy. We would search for hours how to get out or go somewhere when all we had to do was walk through a door 🤣
It's also a hilarious reference for other long-time D&D players. At one time or another, almost every adventuring group has found itself outside a door or another portal and gotten a series of lousy rolls and just COULD NOT get the &^#%$&$% thing open. And of course, inevitably, that's the only simple way to get to the next important part of the "dungeon". It's as common a horror/comedy story as the times your characters got TPK'd. (Total Party Kill by the monsters - start over with new characters).
Re: Vex's attitude to Keyleth. As others have stated, the twins had only each other to rely on through some very dark times, and they both have some dependency issues as a result. Vex's are much more overt and noticeable. Vex's creator and VA (Laura Bailey) specifically brought up that at this point, Vex actually adores Keyleth, but is forcing herself to dislike Keyleth and find fault, because Vex is scared that Vax having something more than a casual fling will mean he leaves her behind.
Fun fact: as others have mentioned, Vox Machina originally had an 8th party member, a sorcerer named Tiberius. The player who portrayed Tiberius left the group just before they left for Whitestone on not so good terms. The vampire hunting supplies they lost over the cliff was a nod to the fact that Tiberius was storing those supplies in his bag of holding, so when he left the story, they also lost access to all of the equipment he held.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Orion Acaba, the player, was a monster. Good he left. He was unstable, did dangerous things in the game and out, cheated on rolls/etc, stole money from charity, abused multiple girlfriends, was super inappropriate during sessions, and more (some of this was after he left the show). At the time, it was hard to notice the signs esp because his character had a lot of good potential, and most things didn't come out until after he left. Watching it now it's very obvious. If you watch CR, it's best to start once he leaves (which is around episode 28 I believe). This is also at the beginning of the Briarwood arc which is what season 1 is about too.
The door scene with vax, scanlan, and percy was a real thing that happened in the game where they just rolled super poorly and couldn't open it no matter what they did which made the door a meme among critical role fans. And the suntree scene was Matt mercer's (The DM) way of showing the players that he wasn't messing around.
actually actually, in Percy's backstory, he tried approaching Anna Ripley at one of her dig sites, probably to exact some revenge, and he was beaten and jailed. Unless Ripley just randomly decided NOT to inform them they'd failed to finishe the job, they knew.
Fun aside all of the campfire stories they told are actual encounters from the live campaign (except for Scanlan's). In terms of the big moment in this set of episodes the Sun Tree moment is what pretty much all the players agree was a turning point in the first campaign. It was when they realized Matt (the DM) wasn't playing around and things got real for them.
Cassandra was useful to the Briarwoods. They forcefully took control of the city, and the people who lived their. Having Cassandra as a prisoner meant that the resistance were less likely to take the risk of attacking them directly. They could also use her as a way to legitimize their claim to Whitestone.
oh my god. I somehow edited that entire thing without ever noticing it 😂 sorry about that. Glad it was only in the first video (episode 5 not 6). Will keep an eye out for that in the future. Seriously never saw it somehow. 😳
Episode 5: The Dinner guests did have a dinner fit for Kings, there was Lobster and all manner of gourmet foods it really was lovely. while I know the Briarwoods have done damage to the Suntree, I do wonder if his memory is that of a Noble boys seen threw Rose tinted Glasses. All there greatest Kills are actually from the Campaign, except Scanlan's, Episode 6: the first Guy the Giants Kill in is Mat Mercers Cameo in this episode, he also Voices Levi in Attack on Titan. If you count the shots Percy fires into Stonefell, he fires 7 Shots from a 6 shooter with out reloading. what does Percy Bring to Vox Machina if he loses his smoke powers, ... the city of WhiteStone and all its resources.
Marisha (Keyleths player) was actually the first one to put the pieces together and say out loud "Oh my god...It looks like us." in the stream, people in the stream's chat were thinking it might of been Percy's family but when it clicked for everyone, it was like unleashing Pandora's box of horrified fans Also the main reason Casandra is alive is because its much easier to control the populace of Whitestone if they are the caretakers of the only known living heir of the de Rolo family.
It was actually Taliesin (Percy's player) that got it first, but he just said that Percy walks away and let Matt (the Dungeon Master) continue describing the hanging bodies. Marisha got it second and was (understandably) distressed and vocal about it. Then, one by one the rest of the cast got it and they all were appropiately shocked. It's definitely worth a watch.
Quick categorizing for the dnd world. Demons actually do not come from hell they come from the abyss the hells are the home of devils and they´re kind.
@@jkuzem96 Unless they changed it in more recent D&D, the Nine Hells were separate from the 666 levels of the Abyss. The Hells were for the Lawful Evil Devils and the Abyss was for the Chaotic Evil Demons and they regularly fought each other as much as they did the celestials from the "Good" planes, which was one reason they couldn't just invade and conquer the Prime Material Plane - the "base" plane where most of any campaign takes place. Evil can't even get along with itself.
The hanging serves two purposes: To Vox Machina, it says, "We know you're coming, so here's a preview of what we're going to do to you." To everyone else in town, it says, "Do not help these people."
Your videos actually answer a question I has when I watched the show. I'm a hardcore fan of critical role and enjoyed the show thoroughly, but my main concern was that with all the nods, and fan service, I was wondering it would also appeal to people outside of the critter community. Your insight on it is fascinating, I love it
OMG, you guys are going to LOVE Scanlan's BiG moment! Also, have no fear, your questions about Cassandra (the sister) will be answered. And, glad you guys finally caught the glimpse of Percy's 'alter ego', yeah, let's go with that. ;)
That "Tree scene" in the End of episode 5.. its the hardest/darkest scene in the entire season for me.. that is pure cruelity. I know there is never be just good and evil, there are many shades of colors, but now.. it is personal. Not just for Percy. But his darkside is super strong and if he lose control? Oh gee.. To be honest. When i first saw this: I'll got also Jamie and Cersei vibs from Vex and Vax. Which is okay in my eyes. But it is just they care for each other. And it is said that Vex has not yet found the right man or woman in life to make her happy.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 I mentioned this once in the stream: I find authority and this charming way of being clever very very attractive in women, then their sense of humor and only then everything else.
@@GirlofCulture Vex and Vax are half breeds, human mixed with elf. they are each others sanctuary from the open dislike and distrust of humans and elves. twins are typically close as it is, mix that with the racism and hatred...... they are literally each others world.
read a book years ago. basically space pirates mixed with spartans. they steal a cargo spaceship and find alcohol labeled in a language unknown to them but labeled with a black skull and crossbones on it. they were discussing what to do with it, drink it or sell it. the naive member asked what the skull meant. the reckless one replied "great times and memory loss. oh well, didn't need those brain cells anyway."
Hearing Matt Mercer describe this scene during the campaign is what drew my attention. It came out in a top 5 mind f*** video and it definitely succeeded
One way you can look at it is similar to the fantasy trope of hostage taking/keeping as seen in things like Game of Thrones. Keeping Cassandra around as a hostage is a way to keep the population in check. She (Cassandra) becomes a symbol of their “benevolence.” Remember, the Briarwoods concocted the story that the De Rolos succumbed to a disease, so parading her in front of the people is a way for them to also be seen a protectors/saviors. However that is a thinly veiled ruse, as you can see the region has gone to shite, hence the rise of the resistance. No spoilers, you will learn more in the next few episodes. Oh and I wouldn’t worry about Kiki. Vex clearly doesn’t want to lose more than she already has - as you pointed out, the imagery from the credits, Vex’s story from episode one, and the meaningful exchange the twins had at the end of episode two over receiving a home.
Funny thing about the Sun Tree reveal and how massively dark and powerful it was... Matt is one of the nicest, sweetest guys ever, he's actually said between him and Marisha he's the passive one who will eat the burger he didn't order... Yet he came up with that. It says a lot about how dedicated he is to the story and how well he gets into the heads of the characters he's created, like Delilah and Silas
It’s always the nicest people that end up playing the darker roles on stuff like tv and movies. I know this was a D&D campaign but it still works. Being nice in real life all the time means you have a lot of pent up evil to come out through art apparently 😛😈🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Oh there's no question that Matt can do some truly evil things... You think the cliffhangers in the show are bad... What he did to the players from time to time was much, much worse. You could see the evil grin on his face when he did it too. But as a DM I understand how much fun it is to tell the players "And that's where we'll wrap up." and see the looks of anguish on their faces. My personal best was when I told the players via a NPC, Merina who was their housekeeper. "Oh and Wren, your mom is here." then told them... "And that's where we'll end tonight." Wrens parents had abandoned her on the steps of a temple when she was like 5... The look on her face, was priceless. :D
Its so interesting seeing people react who werent apart of seeing the original play through. Their theories and fresh non understanding is..fun. Theres so much missed in the animation and Ill always encourage the original material viewing but its pretty sweet to watch it happen like this, hope to see more in the future!
Fun facts; The flashbacks during the campfire scene are all actual things that occurred during the campaign, one of which led to a mini-arc which we may not get now considering how the story has had to shift things around a bit for this show. Pike wasn't originally hung up on the Sun Tree, having already bowed out of the story before encountering the Brairwoods. Instead, another character named Tiberius, played by another actor who had left the show a few episodes earlier was there instead, as was Trinket. The door they had trouble unlocking was yet another in a long line of doors Vox Machina had issues dealing with, and was possibly the worst one they ever faced. It took 3 spells and dealt actual damage to Scanlan before they got through.
The bit at the end of episode 5 with the "hanged message" on the Sun Tree always reminds me of something I heard a while back, (don't remember where exactly) but its that: the best way to snuff out a "hero" is to break their will to fight. A hero without a will to fight won't get up after being knocked down. a rebellion without hope dies. So I think it was 1. a message to Vox Machina, trying to scare them into giving up and kind of a "Hi, we knew you were coming. welcome to your death" but 2. a message to the rest of the city of Whitestone. and maybe even try to turn them against Vox Machina. A "Go away! You'll only get us all beaten and/or killed"
They kept Cass alive mostly as a means of control: To legitimize their rule in the eyes of the towns folk and to give them false hope that a de Rolo restoration was possible, which prevented people from committing to far more destructive acts of rebellion or attempts of escape from Whitestone.
Originally, they rode horses and had to leave them behind along the way; they ended up torn apart by harpies. The first two kills actually happened, earlier in the campaign. Though the details differ, the door thing actually happened.
Funny you mentioned Arya's list, that is actually what Taliesin named that gun "The List". Also, though hard to believe due to his voice now, but Archie was voiced by Dominic Monaghan, i.e. Merry from LOTR.
@@dhamon45 he is a heavy smoker, as far as I know...but it had to be something else on top of that...because yeah, his voice is EXTREMELY hoarse now. Something more than just frequent smoking, I think.
"Keyleth, could you posess that one?" She probably could unless one of two problems I believe may have happened at that time. If I'm mistaken, someone correct me. 1) The demon dog was outside the 60ft spell range of her "Dominate Beast" spell or 2) Keyleth could only cast the spell once per day As for the dark and twisted world, you can thank and/or blame Matthew Mercer and Tallsin Jaffe (Percy's creator/voice actor)
Skull and crossbones on liquor was to depict it being super strong. Yes, it's basically saying poison, but in the sense that its high proof. Poison to someone that doesn't have a high tolerance. Primarily from old west movies and cartoons.
A little Easter egg about Cassandra: Archie referred first to her as their rescue target, "The Kestrel". A kestrel is a small, brown-feathered hawk, also known as the Sparrowhawk. (If you've never read Ursula K LeGuin's legendary classic fantasy, "A Wizard of Earthsea," it's also the name of the protaganist.) They are tiny and fierce, often living on rocky sea cliffs and battling fierce winds to raise their fledglings.
Cassandra was (at the time) the last known living member of the ruling family in Whitestone. Her being a de Rolo might be helpful for the Briarwoods to manipulate the populace and quell any possible revolts. Fun fact: Percy said "The Suntree was planted by the Dawnfather." Pelor, the Dawnfather is one of the gods of this setting. He is a deity of light, summer and agriculture. It may or may not be a big deal. Fun fact 2: Percy's pepperbox has 6 barrels, which means he has to reload after 6 shots. He is shown reloading his gun every 6 shots many times. When he met Captain Stonefell, he shot him 7 times without reloading. I can neither confirm, nor deny that to be intentional.
These reactions are great! Both of your intuitions and theories are very clever and some are VERY good calls. Desperately looking forward to more episodes, as always!
Not a spoiler since its not mentioned later in the cartoon, but in the game Delilah once said to Cassandra "You could have been my daughter". Sylas as a vampire can't have real living children, and he's a monster on the inside anyway. But Delilah though evil is still human, and maybe once a family is something she once wanted. Although its a very twisted way of going about it, she could still see Cass as some kind of actual daughter
Don't underestimate Percy. He's rather crucial to group in many ways, partly for his inventions and for other reasons too. I can't go too much into details without spoilers, but there's a reason why Percy is a fan favorite.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Lol. Yes, he's especially useful when he let's out No Mercy Percy. I'll admit this much, going back through the 1st campaign, I'm not sure the group would've survived without him.
That's true and hilarious without further explanation. Essentially Scanlan asked Gilmore for a way to leave marks that he could use like a camera, and because Sam Riegel is Sam Riegel he made sure to specify he wants the marks to be his poop.
So by now, the main cast has killed of most of their children. The fisherman's kids that died in the first episodes. The girl was Liam's (Vax) daughter and the boy was Sam's (Scanlan) son. The little girl that was hung in the Suntree was Sam's daughter. Left is Liam's son and Travis' (Grog) and Laura's (Vex) son.
It happens in the next episode but I'll comment here because you're talking about it. (Ps I know I'm way late). In the next episode Percy is explaining his list and scanlan says "that's only 5, whos the 6th barrel for?" Percy is holding the gun pointed up but his shadow behind him is pointing the gun at his head.
To make things even more morbid... the girl in this as well as the kids for Episode 1 that died from the dragon attack are voiced by Liam (Vax) and Sam's(Scanlan) kids...
For the undead wolf-things, think of it like Delilah applying the principles of fusion cuisine to making new servants with her necromancy. ;) Also, a little background note. As the presence of an established resistance in Whitestone indicates, this isn’t the first spark of rebellion against the Briarwoods. All the other open rebellions failed though, which was why Archibald and Keeper Yennen were keeping a low profile until Vox Machina came along. The scene at the back door happened ingame too, and is a great way of showing what it looks like in practice when the players roll low and fail to meet the difficulty checks set by the DM. :)
Speaking from personal experience as someone who watched their playthrough of campaign one and knew what was going to happen at the tree, oh man actually seeing for the first that family that got invited to dinner wrecked my whole evening.
Percy's pepperbox is called 'The List', and 5 of the 6 barrels have names etched on the sides. If you count the shots, Percy shoots Stonefell 7 times without reloading. You might think this is a continuity error, but it's not.
"Dagger, Dagger, Dagger": Another iconic line/catchphrase from Campaign 1 by Liam (Vax's player/VA). The end scene could have been worse, in the original game, Trinket came along with the group to Whitestone and the Briarwoods also had a bear hung up on the Suntree with the rest of them. The bag that Percy put the rifle (called "Bad News") is an actual item in D&D, it's a "Bag of Holding." While I don't think it's going to be shown in this show, there is a version called a "Bag of Colding" which basically acts as a fridge variation of a Bag of Holding where it preserves meat and such. Fun fact, if anything living put into the bag will more than likely die.
If the DM is being a stickler for rules any living thing put inside any extra-dimensional container will probably die within a very short time, since most of those magical devices don't have a source of oxygen if they aren't open to the outside air. That's unless the living thing is one of the particular "types" that don't need to breathe (Warforged, Undead, etc.).
Vax is the only person that Vex has been able to rely on for her whole life, the only person who didn't let her down. It's hinted at in interactions between the twins "Remember when we escaped Singorn?" "Fuck Father and that place" They have been through a lot together the only person each other had for a long time before they joined Vox Machina, Vex has never had to share her brother's love or friendship and it is difficult for her, and she has the irrational fear that if Vax falls in love he might abandon her. Everyone has those irrational fears of abandonment. Does she handle it well? not particularily, is it understandable? up to a point.
Vex needs to realize how amazing she is and that even through her brother is great too. She can make it on her own if she had to. Plus she has Trinket ☺️😊🥳🥳
I think that's a misunderstanding, Vex can only sense dragons, specifically, not just "bad vibes". Her saying she can "feel" that Uriel is under a charm was more a figure of speech, but I can see how that could be confusing.
"They Are raising her?......WHAT!?" So common reaction in this episode!! XD also they Briarwoods believed that Percy Died...liek they stated at episode 3 when leaving from the banquet
20:20 bag of holding, an iconic abs mostly staple item many adventurers have on tabletop rpgs due to how much stuff they carry. Depending on who runs the game and rules it’s either weight limit or type limit (you can carry max of what you can holster, so commonly 1 bow/crossbow or long weapon like staffs or spears on your back or latched onto backpack, 2 main melee weapons like swords or maces on side of belt, 2-3 small weapons like daggers also on belt and one shield strapped onto arm) on what each player can carry. Commonly type limit due to a lot of math required to calculate each weight. Unless you throw out the old 5e weight system and use pathfinder 2e/starfinder bulk system which is better. Anyways bag of holding can store a bunch of stuff you can carry. Also note: you can technically hide inside of it but there is no air. Meaning if stay in there too long and can’t get out most likely you gonna die from suffocation.

The situation with Vex Vax and Keyleth ties into a conversation the twins had in a previous episode about how maybe it was time to leave the group behind, and the realisation that they aren't going to do that. In their life up until then they've only ever been able to count on each other, and without giving away details, they've always run away when things became too uncomfortable for them. It's a pattern of behavior that they are breaking here for the first time, and it makes Vex extremely wary. They're going into danger for their friends, but in the back of her mind Vex is still thinking of the worst scenario escape plan: grab Vax and run. Seeing her brother get so attached to Keyleth makes her realise that escape might no longer be an option in their future, and that scares her because it's always been the safety net. As I understand it that has always been her main reason for "disliking" Keyleth. There's a bit of jealousy at having to share Vax's affection for the first time in her life, and a bit of "that girl could really break his heart so maybe he shouldn't risk it" protectiveness too, but mostly it's that her world and the things she needs to care about are getting bigger and more numerous and important, and right up until her brother started falling in love she still thought she could just drop everything but him (and Trinket) and run without regrets. It's making her conscious of something that has probably been true for a while, that Vox Machina isn't a group she can just turn her back on when it's not working anymore. And she's taking out her feelings of uncertainty and dread on Keyleth.
Btw, have you seen the animated show Invincuible yet? If not, I can highly recommend also watching it, maybe before its 2nd season airs at the end of this year probably?

Bit darker but way ‘bigger’ and cooler, peep the first episode, love your channel.
You guys are doing great. i will say though and please consider this as a positive feedback because i know many reaction watchers out there that get deterred off, and i want you guys to succeed: I would consider a single upgrade on the mic, and as for your audio listening getting an audio splitter 3.5 mm for example or whatever adaptor works depending on your gear, and consider running the reactions through an audio headset or earbuds, there's many comfortable models that aren't bad on the ears. And route your audio through a parallel mixer or recorder on the pc etc... that way we dont hear the static high decibel feedback noise or "hum" in the background similar to a high voltage electrical current, maybe also add a muffler or microphone screen on the mic (it's like 10$) for now i would then then get 2 x 2 sound proof panels and put 2 behind the microphone area and more behind your backs, facing the microphone. That way the feedback from the speakers from bouncing back into the microphone. I want you to do great because you're good peeps, thought i'd share that sometimes the audio quality is the sole deterrent from watching a channel. If you're nice people and not complete condescending annoying brats, then reacting can be done as a second nature without overthinking it, and people will love you, but the audio? audio can stop a good reactor from shining. that is all, have fun though!
Appreciate the feedback. The sound definitely got messed up for this one as opposed to our other videos. Just Murphy’s law in full effect for these videos all around for some reason haha. Sound proof panels are a great idea. Just wondering if we will have room for them in our filming area. We’ve thought about using headphones but it kind of too immersive. Makes it feel like we are watching it by ourselves instead of with each other and then can’t interact with one another. We know some other couple reactors are able to do it. But it’s just not us 🤗 But we do appreciate the constructive feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the video quality overall and also just make the channel better and more fun for everyone 🙂

I think the creepiest thing in episode 5 is at the end credits you can hear the ropes as the swayed on the suntree
This was my favourite little detail. I watched this with headphones the first time and it freaked me out. Amazing touch.
😨😱
That was something I absolutely imagined (and hoped would be in the adaptation) when I first saw the scene in the stream.
It's probably a mix of the "Losing Vax to another waman" and the idea that he is stepping away from the golden rule of only being loyal and attached to each other since everybody else inevitably fails them
It was a great line. Described the difference between the twins with such a small amount of words needed 🙂
Yeah, there's some codependency issues there. Can't wait to see that gt explored more in the series:)
Last sentence sums it up perfectly 🤬
It was done not just as a warning to VM, but as a warning to the towns folk that if you associate or help these people… your fate is the same
Also, you may have missed it but you can hear the swinging of the ropes during the credits
Oh wow. Yeah we missed that because we were kind of in shock so didn’t stay for credits 😨
The Doors the worst enemy of the vox machina, in campaign 2 the worst enemy of Mighty Nein were chairs
By C3 it's just furniture in general.
Poor Vex 😢
Fun fact: as others have mentioned, Vox Machina originally had an 8th party member, a sorcerer named Tiberius. The player who portrayed Tiberius left the group just before they left for Whitestone on not so good terms. The vampire hunting supplies they lost over the cliff was a nod to the fact that Tiberius was storing those supplies in his bag of holding, so when he left the story, they also lost access to all of the equipment he held.
Oh no. Bummer the player left the group on as terms. Seems like such a fun group to hang out with and we haven’t even seen them in real life 😂😊🤗
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Orion Acaba, the player, was a monster.
Haha, the door scene reminds us of our trouble with doors in Batman Arkham Origins 😂
Actually, the Briarwoods did not know that Percy was still alive. In the 3rd episode they were surprised he was still alive.
And I'm the live stream he was magically disguised as Vax so they still didn't know at the dinner
Good point. 🙂
actually actually, in Percy's backstory, he tried approaching Anna Ripley at one of her dig sites, probably to exact some revenge, and he was beaten and jailed.
Unless Ripley just randomly decided NOT to inform them they'd failed to finishe the job, they knew.
@@zippomage In all honesty I do not remember that.
The Tree scene... The proper term is "hung in effigy" and yes it is extremely f***ed
😱😨
And thus we are shown the second appearance of “No Mercy Percy”
Enjoying when he shows up 😈
Fun aside all of the campfire stories they told are actual encounters from the live campaign (except for Scanlan's).
In terms of the big moment in this set of episodes the Sun Tree moment is what pretty much all the players agree was a turning point in the first campaign. It was when they realized Matt (the DM) wasn't playing around and things got real for them.
That would’ve been cool to watch live to see the reactions to the sun tree as they played it. Because that was dark for sure 😱😨
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 You can watch it here :D

It's appropriate that Keyleth was the one to say "It's us" as it was Marisha who first figured out as Matt was describing the figures.
@@Logan_Baronvery much so. It's a great callback.
One of the best turning points in the campaign. You can tell they start taking it real serious after that.
Cassandra was useful to the Briarwoods. They forcefully took control of the city, and the people who lived their. Having Cassandra as a prisoner meant that the resistance were less likely to take the risk of attacking them directly. They could also use her as a way to legitimize their claim to Whitestone.
And she makes a convenient blood doner if a certain vampire needs a quick snack. As long as he doesn't take to much each time, she'll live.

That mouse cursor in the middle of the screen. XD
Damn now I can't unsee it
Yep, was going to comment on it myself. Damn thats annoying.
oh my god. I somehow edited that entire thing without ever noticing it 😂 sorry about that. Glad it was only in the first video (episode 5 not 6). Will keep an eye out for that in the future. Seriously never saw it somehow. 😳
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 lol I guess it might help copyright :P
Episode 5: The Dinner guests did have a dinner fit for Kings, there was Lobster and all manner of gourmet foods it really was lovely.
while I know the Briarwoods have done damage to the Suntree, I do wonder if his memory is that of a Noble boys seen threw Rose tinted Glasses.
All there greatest Kills are actually from the Campaign, except Scanlan's,
Episode 6: the first Guy the Giants Kill in is Mat Mercers Cameo in this episode, he also Voices Levi in Attack on Titan.
If you count the shots Percy fires into Stonefell, he fires 7 Shots from a 6 shooter with out reloading.
what does Percy Bring to Vox Machina if he loses his smoke powers, ... the city of WhiteStone and all its resources.
Love how Matt Mercer gets his Alfred Hitchcock moments in episodes 😛
Marisha (Keyleths player) was actually the first one to put the pieces together and say out loud "Oh my god...It looks like us." in the stream, people in the stream's chat were thinking it might of been Percy's family but when it clicked for everyone, it was like unleashing Pandora's box of horrified fans
Also the main reason Casandra is alive is because its much easier to control the populace of Whitestone if they are the caretakers of the only known living heir of the de Rolo family.
Man. Bet that was a powerful moment on the stream 😱
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 There have been some real doozies from the stream.
Vex doesn't sense hidden things in people. She can sense dragons. That's all. She's just jealous and doesn't fully trust Keyleth.
😎👍🙂
Quick categorizing for the dnd world. Demons actually do not come from hell they come from the abyss the hells are the home of devils and they´re kind.
The abyss is one of the 9 hells
@@jkuzem96 Unless they changed it in more recent D&D, the Nine Hells were separate from the 666 levels of the Abyss. The Hells were for the Lawful Evil Devils and the Abyss was for the Chaotic Evil Demons and they regularly fought each other as much as they did the celestials from the "Good" planes, which was one reason they couldn't just invade and conquer the Prime Material Plane - the "base" plane where most of any campaign takes place.
Evil can't even get along with itself.
The hanging serves two purposes:
To Vox Machina, it says, "We know you're coming, so here's a preview of what we're going to do to you."
To everyone else in town, it says, "Do not help these people."
Effective strategy 😱
Your videos actually answer a question I has when I watched the show. I'm a hardcore fan of critical role and enjoyed the show thoroughly, but my main concern was that with all the nods, and fan service, I was wondering it would also appeal to people outside of the critter community. Your insight on it is fascinating, I love it
That’s why it’s a great show. It’s humor and story hooks newbies like us but there are plenty of inside jokes as well for those in the know 🙂🥳
OMG, you guys are going to LOVE Scanlan's BiG moment!
Also, have no fear, your questions about Cassandra (the sister) will be answered. And, glad you guys finally caught the glimpse of Percy's 'alter ego', yeah, let's go with that.
;)
😜 our Percy predictions continue to come and alter as we watch 😁
BTW the voice actor for Archy is Dominic Monaghan, "Merry" from The Lord of the Rings.
No wonder we liked him so much 😊
That "Tree scene" in the End of episode 5.. its the hardest/darkest scene in the entire season for me.. that is pure cruelity.
Vex has high standards and justifiably. Also probably is intimidating to some 😍😊🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 I mentioned this once in the stream: I find authority and this charming way of being clever very very attractive in women, then their sense of humor and only then everything else.
@@GirlofCulture Vex and Vax are half breeds, human mixed with elf. they are each others sanctuary from the open dislike and distrust of humans and elves. twins are typically close as it is, mix that with the racism and hatred...... they are literally each others world.
"Pretty sure it's got a skull and crossbones on it."
Oh c'mon, we've all drank something you could run a car for several miles on.
😂 facts. Skol vodka tastes like how bug spray smells 😝
read a book years ago. basically space pirates mixed with spartans. they steal a cargo spaceship and find alcohol labeled in a language unknown to them but labeled with a black skull and crossbones on it. they were discussing what to do with it, drink it or sell it. the naive member asked what the skull meant. the reckless one replied "great times and memory loss. oh well, didn't need those brain cells anyway."
Hearing Matt Mercer describe this scene during the campaign is what drew my attention. It came out in a top 5 mind f*** video and it definitely succeeded
i believe there were some tears at the table over it.
So Cassandra is their Sansa. Makes sense 🙂
"And that's where we'll end tonight."
Wrens parents had abandoned her on the steps of a temple when she was like 5...
We may have to go back and watch the actual campaign now. Though only what we have seen cuz it’s nice going in blind 🤗
Oh my god I can’t believe they originally hung Trinket 😨😱
Best after Episode discussion yet! Hopefully the rest of the Esp. will be just as good.... binge watching this playlist today.
That’s a very true message about heroes and how to quash a rebellion. Sad when seeing it used effectively 😢
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 oh absolutely horrible, for sure.
They kept Cass alive mostly as a means of control: To legitimize their rule in the eyes of the towns folk and to give them false hope that a de Rolo restoration was possible, which prevented people from committing to far more destructive acts of rebellion or attempts of escape from Whitestone.
Correct. The Briarwoods might be evil sociopaths, but they are not stupid.
😎👍🙂
Originally, they rode horses and had to leave them behind along the way; they ended up torn apart by harpies. The first two kills actually happened, earlier in the campaign. Though the details differ, the door thing actually happened.
Torn apart by harpies? 😨 That’s even worse
Funny you mentioned Arya's list, that is actually what Taliesin named that gun "The List". Also, though hard to believe due to his voice now, but Archie was voiced by Dominic Monaghan, i.e. Merry from LOTR.
That was Merry? 😀
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Yeah, not sure exactly what happened, but it sounds like something damaged his vocal cords.
1) The demon dog was outside the 60ft spell range of her "Dominate Beast" spell or 2) Keyleth could only cast the spell once per day
As for the dark and twisted world, you can thank and/or blame Matthew Mercer and Tallsin Jaffe (Percy's creator/voice actor)
We like the dark and twisted world. Unexpected for it to go this dark but all of it is justified 😀

@@AnxietyRat Actually, you're right. Thanks for that.
Skull and crossbones on liquor was to depict it being super strong. Yes, it's basically saying poison, but in the sense that its high proof. Poison to someone that doesn't have a high tolerance. Primarily from old west movies and cartoons.
😎👍🍾🥂
A little Easter egg about Cassandra: Archie referred first to her as their rescue target, "The Kestrel".
A kestrel is a small, brown-feathered hawk, also known as the Sparrowhawk. (If you've never read Ursula K LeGuin's legendary classic fantasy, "A Wizard of Earthsea," it's also the name of the protaganist.) They are tiny and fierce, often living on rocky sea cliffs and battling fierce winds to raise their fledglings.
Keep an eye on Percy. He has his pepperbox pistol, and he has Bad News (because nothing travels faster), and he'll have more.
And his pistol is appropriately named The List.
😎👍😀
Interesting fun fact 2 🤔
I love the thought that the seventh shot is taking the soul.
It was this moment during the live stream games, that the players realized just how dark their story can get. Its definitely a turning point
Can for sure see that 😨
These reactions are great! Both of your intuitions and theories are very clever and some are VERY good calls. Desperately looking forward to more episodes, as always!

Def not Def: Welcome back! We...
Me: SCANLAN HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND!!!
😂🤣🤗
Not a spoiler since its not mentioned later in the cartoon, but in the game Delilah once said to Cassandra "You could have been my daughter". Sylas as a vampire can't have real living children, and he's a monster on the inside anyway. But Delilah though evil is still human, and maybe once a family is something she once wanted. Although its a very twisted way of going about it, she could still see Cass as some kind of actual daughter
That’s an interesting line and wonder why they left it out. Would’ve been cool to have it in the series and added an extra layer to all of this 🤔🤓
Don't underestimate Percy. He's rather crucial to group in many ways, partly for his inventions and for other reasons too. I can't go too much into details without spoilers, but there's a reason why Percy is a fan favorite.
Glad to hear it. He’s been great so far. And love the nickname No Mercy Percy 😎🤟
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Lol. Yes, he's especially useful when he let's out No Mercy Percy. I'll admit this much, going back through the 1st campaign, I'm not sure the group would've survived without him.
21:21 in the campaign Scanlin could actually use his "leavings" as like camera's.
That's true and hilarious without further explanation. Essentially Scanlan asked Gilmore for a way to leave marks that he could use like a camera, and because Sam Riegel is Sam Riegel he made sure to specify he wants the marks to be his poop.
🤢😂
So by now, the main cast has killed of most of their children. The fisherman's kids that died in the first episodes. The girl was Liam's (Vax) daughter and the boy was Sam's (Scanlan) son. The little girl that was hung in the Suntree was Sam's daughter. Left is Liam's son and Travis' (Grog) and Laura's (Vex) son.
That’s some twisted fun 😝
It happens in the next episode but I'll comment here because you're talking about it. (Ps I know I'm way late). In the next episode Percy is explaining his list and scanlan says "that's only 5, whos the 6th barrel for?" Percy is holding the gun pointed up but his shadow behind him is pointing the gun at his head.
Oh nice little detail there. Hadn’t noticed that 😯
It goes with that old Chinese Proverb:
"If you set out for revenge - Start by digging TWO graves."
To make things even more morbid... the girl in this as well as the kids for Episode 1 that died from the dragon attack are voiced by Liam (Vax) and Sam's(Scanlan) kids...
😨
So so so glad I got to see this video thanks 🙏 for making my day
Our pleasure 🥳🥳
For the undead wolf-things, think of it like Delilah applying the principles of fusion cuisine to making new servants with her necromancy. ;)
Also, a little background note.
That was a fun scene. And glad they kept it in from the campaign 🙂
27:30 I love Vax my first DnD character was very inspired by him in how he acted.
The corpse in the middle shows up in Campaign 3 ...

Speaking from personal experience as someone who watched their playthrough of campaign one and knew what was going to happen at the tree, oh man actually seeing for the first that family that got invited to dinner wrecked my whole evening.
That little girl asking if she won a prize 😭😱
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 y'all I was instantly yelling "Oh HELL no! NO! NO NO NO!" at my TV when that happened.
Heh, you probably don't know this, but Percy's weapon is actually called "The List".
Perfect name 😁
Percy's pepperbox is called 'The List', and 5 of the 6 barrels have names etched on the sides.
If you count the shots, Percy shoots Stonefell 7 times without reloading. You might think this is a continuity error, but it's not.
Interesting 🤔😀

Ah Okay, it makes more sense that she can feel dragons only. 🙂

Interesting. Wonder if anyone will hide in it in future episodes 🤔
They used weight in the campaign, IIRC.
I think it'll be briefly mentioned in the series why the Briarwoods kept Cassandra alive and raised her.

Glad you found the channel and our Vox Machina. 😀 Good timing cuz we got 7 & 8 coming out today. We’ve finished the show because with stuff like this if we can’t watch it when everyone else does we don’t want our reaction or predications to be influenced at all 🙂😎🤟🥳
i hope there's season 2! this was surprisingly good, i didn't expect to like it
Already green lit for a season 2 from what we’ve heard 😀🥳🥳
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 and season 3!
Like other have said about Vex. She is a very complex character. She more then what she seems. She is guarded which is understandable. In time vex will find her place and worth
Good. We want the best for Vex 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 I watched the live campaign. She has one of the best character growths. I can't wait for guys to see her path she takes. She my favorite 😍 and relatable
14:00 After season 2 I would guess that what's going on is thta Vex knows Vax is a lot more fragile than most people would think.
Yeah, the tree bit was to screw with them, but it sets up a few things later on in the campaign (and in campaign 3 - no spoilers).
Oh wow. Will keep that in the back of our mind 🙂
Glad that Vex’s priorities goes 1. Vax 2. trinket then everyone else 😊
Btw, have you seen the animated show Invincuible yet? If not, I can highly recommend also watching it, maybe before its 2nd season airs at the end of this year probably?
That is one we plan to react to on the channel as well 😁
I love your reactions, and this one is no different, but that cursor in the middle of the screen was driving me thoroughly up the wall lol
So sorry about that 😢 Not sure how it was missed editing the whole episode 5. Thankfully it wasn’t in episode 6 and we will keep an eye out for it in future episodes 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 You're fine. I mostly managed to tune it out, and again, I love you're reactions and was mostly looking at you guys. Just occasionally I'd notice it lol
Again, great video, though
YES I have been waiting
😎🤟🥳
I'm just saying, if my local library sent a message like that when I took a rare book out without permission, I wouldn't steal again.
😂
Omg the cursor lol
Yeah 😔😣😖 Won’t happen again….of course, we never saw it the first time haha so will have to edit it or watch it back on a bigger screen I guess 🤗
Do the Zombie mold wolves have a specific name in canon?
We’d be interested to know as well 🤔
If you guys are enjoying this show and may be interested in another like it, I find Castlevania on Netflix to be one of the best english anime shows I’ve ever watched. it’s concise, quality and has reached its conclusion so you don’t have to wait for episodes. Bit darker but way ‘bigger’ and cooler, peep the first episode, love your channel.
Thanks for the rec! We’ve had others say Castlevania is good but a quick reasoning as to why people enjoy it always helps 😀
I don't know why the cursor in the middle of the screen is so annoying to some people, but i am one of them.
Sorry about that. I just can’t believe I didn’t see it while editing. Will make sure it doesn’t happen again and it’s not in episode 6 🤗
You guys are doing great. i will say though and please consider this as a positive feedback because i know many reaction watchers out there that get deterred off, and i want you guys to succeed:
I would consider a single upgrade on the mic, and as for your audio listening getting an audio splitter 3.5 mm for example or whatever adaptor works depending on your gear, and consider running the reactions through an audio headset or earbuds, there's many comfortable models that aren't bad on the ears.
And route your audio through a parallel mixer or recorder on the pc etc... that way we dont hear the static high decibel feedback noise or "hum" in the background similar to a high voltage electrical current, maybe also add a muffler or microphone screen on the mic (it's like 10$)
for now i would then then get 2 x 2 sound proof panels and put 2 behind the microphone area and more behind your backs, facing the microphone.
But it’s just not us 🤗
But we do appreciate the constructive feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the video quality overall and also just make the channel better and more fun for everyone 🙂
When it comes to Vex and Vax, keep in mind that their entire lives they've depended on each other. It's just been the 2 of them and Vex is scared that 1) Vax will get hurt but 2) Vex could lose her brother and be truly alone. In the end, Key scares her. I'm sure it's been posted but here's the scene from the campaign. There are 2 extra bodies on the tree originally though. 1 is a character that's not in the show and 1 was Trinket. 5min clip so it's pretty short. czcams.com/video/HGgpO13Icu8/video.html
And on the topic of No Mercy Percy, there's 1 barrel w/o a name on it.
Can’t believe they even hung something for Trinket 😨😱
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 here are the original char intros if you're interested. No spoilers but gives some back story. czcams.com/video/_b1oZmPrpDg/video.html
Great reaction just wish you would move your cursor so it's not in the centre of the screen, it made me feel like it was back in elementary school
I kept bumping my own mouse, as if that could move it.
Sorry about that. What is crazy is that I never saw it while editing or maybe I just thought it was my cursor. Either way I’m glad it wasn’t in both episodes and will keep an eye out in the future should it happen again so we can re-record the episode 🤗
Oof, the audio is a little crackly in this recording, anyone else getting that?
Yeah not sure why it was clipping during filming. Maybe mic not plugged in all the way or something but it was off for these two episodes. Murphy’s law was in full effect for these episodes 😭
Ey Jurassic world dominions trailer 2 just released a few hours ago :O
😎🤟🥳 posted yesterday so hopefully you saw it
wow it was released/uploaded two hours after i posted(atleast for me haha) .
You guys should react to black Canary versus Sindel I also love your content and your guys's personality
Thanks! ☺️ And appreciate the Death Battle rec 😎🤟
I wonder if they will react to " the engoodening of "No Man's Sky" by internet historian
On our list to check out at some point 🙂
When can we expect to see episode 7? It's personally one of my favourite episodes
Out of town at the moment. Hoping to get it up next week for Patreon and then over the weekend for YT
I know it's probably way too big of an ask... but I would love for you guys to react to the actual Critical Role campaign videos.
Those are pretty long for sure but we may end up checking them out on our own to see if they could work as a reaction 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitive2 Even "The Best Of" highlights would work. I'm convinced a lot of Critters would love to see you coming along the journey.
