People are asking- What is the secret? It's being able to make fire when everything in the woods is covered with snow and wet. There are a number of skills under that heading demonstrated in this video. If enough people are interested, I can make another video explaining each one. Reply to this pinned comment to let me know. Thanks for watching. Hope to see you again soon. -Doug

the things to know about winter camping, Keep your shelter little bigger than a coffin. Keep it sealed, insulated and reflective. Dont try to have a fire inside of it, cause doing so is very dangerous and inefficient. If you DO need a heat source, use 4 head-sized rocks, heated OUTSIDE of the shelter with a pair of opposing Siberian fire lays, heating both sides of the stones for half an hour.
Move the hot stones into a row of pits under your raised bed. Surround each stone with a 2" thick layer of wood ashes and they will warm your shelter by 20F degrees for 5+ hours. Snuff the flames with ashes or dirt, bury some coals and charcoal in the ashes and the fire will be remain "alive" for 12+ hours. Use an Alternative Swedish fire torch to reignite the Siberians if all is wet. YT has vids on both of these types of fire lays.

the tarp style you have here is the one I kind of leen toward ( except I just use ridgeline and long stick along the middle ( from string to ground to give it more structure) so this can be described as 'modified leen-too with a front 1-2 foot overhang ( or modified 'A' -frame ) never tried it in wilderness just in my backyard. what I like about it is simple to set up you can have fire in front and basically protects against wind and precipitation and gives good view on who is approaching you ( main reason ) and probably can close off sides with something as well
