Edvard Grieg (1843 - 1907) was a Norwegian composer and pianist. He is best known for his Piano Concerto in A minor and Peer Gynt (which includes Morning Mood and In the Hall of the Mountain King). Edvard Grieg is to Norway what George Washington is to America and William Shakespeare to England: his country's most celebrated human icon.
Writing to his American biographer, Henry Finck once explained: "The traditional way of life of the Norwegian people, together with Norway's legends, Norway’s history, Norway’s natural scenery, stamped itself on my creative imagination from my earliest years."
Grieg appears to have dedicated himself to establishing single-handedly a national identity for classical music in Norway.
Grieg was desperately unhappy at school, regularly suffering torment and abuse from his fellow students.
During a visit to Copenhagen in 1862, Grieg met the young composer Rikard Nordraak, whose passionate interest in the sagas, landscape and music of his homeland inspired Grieg to take up the musical cudgels on behalf of Norway.
In 1866 - the year of Nordraak's premature death - Grieg gave a concert of his own music, including some piano miniatures and the First Violin Sonata, which proved something of a sensation.
Following his marriage to Nina Hagerup and the birth of their baby daughter, Alexandra, he composed his first and most enduring masterpiece, the A minor Piano Concerto, in a flurry of inspiration.
In 1885 the essentially shy composer took up residence in Troldhaugen (near Bergen) where he was to stay for the next 20 years.
In the summer of 1906, he penned his final composition - the Four Psalms - and then, seriously weakened, left for the comparative warmth of a hotel in Christiana. He was on the verge of undertaking a journey to Britain in the autumn of 1907 when he suffered a massive heart attack, dying in hospital shortly after arrival.

The nationalism in Norway were different from Sweden and Denmark. Norway went into Kalmar Union in 1397 after the plague, Denmark-Norway from 1450 and in union with Sweden between 1814 and 1905. In 1814 Norway got its own constitution. Norwegian artist were devided in both universal romance and national romance. Norway wanted its independant back. Hence Norwegian culture were based on nation building.

This musical documentary so closely reflects my own feelings about Grieg's music that I was really impressed. I've played almost all of the large works and part of my Graduate work in Scandinavia was studying Orchestration with Dr.Shelderup-Ebbe, who later discovered the posthumous works of Grieg. Time in Oslo, with treks to Lappland and special time at Tronheim, are just as fresh today

The part of the story at hall of the mountain king is SOO VERY different from what I was imagining. I was thinking like a of stealthing sneaking group attempting a daring heist that is going terribly wrong.

Nice documentary, however, it is marred by the misleading statement that Morning Mood is about Norway. It is not. It is actually about the Moroccan morning where Peer Gynt was traveling in. This is a surprising error made by the makers in view of the high production standard.

I truly doubt that anyone cares...I am a Musicologist, and some music seems to transcend its origins or purpose. We Americans naturally believe "Morning" to be about a trip to our shores, which never happened! It is so Universal...a glorious morning spreads across the land, any land, anywhere. It belongs to all of us....beautiful thought. I doubt that Grieg would have objected !

@@sarahhearn-vonfoerster7401 As you’ve said, it’s your doubt. Although I don’t really mind, I don’t think you can speak for others. Since you’re a musicologist, you should know that most composers are fastidious about their music, and most musicians I have seen are fastidious about the interpretation of these composers’ music, as evident in the many masterclasses in which professional musicians critique down to the most minute details. Professional musicians, like musicologists, spend their lifetime studying the lives of composers and intricacy of their music. The trivia I pointed out is not to judge, but to provide interest or insight to those who are interested, as myself was. You may continue to doubt but I know that when I shared the trivia with friends they are also intrigued that Grieg was depicting a hot sunny morning scene in Africa. I live in USA too and I never believe this music is about ‘our shores’. Neither do my American friends. Bringing up the topic of American naturally believing in something is therefore a non sequitur. I’m actually quite surprised that as a musicologist, you took the time to doubt the value of the trivia, especially doubting that Grieg himself would care whether listeners care about the background of his music. You don’t know him and certainly cannot speak for him. I would’ve thought that such trivia make classical music so much more fun, interesting and surprising instead of being old fashioned and staid as many feel it is. Having said that, I do think that ignorance doesn’t decrease or affect the enjoyment of such lovely and universal (your word) music.

@@sarahhearn-vonfoerster7401 I doubt that Grieg ever did experience a morning in Morocco. Same goes for the author of Peer Gynt. Peer may have been to Morocco but I can say for sure in the lyric drama Egypt is explicit.
