As of this morning at 9 a.m., September 1st 2023, at age 56, single school teacher, no kids, I am finally debt free.❤❤❤❤
I can tell you that collecting credit card airline miles had absolutely nothing to do with my financial freedom 😂😂😂. It was making changes in my financial mindset, a blessing of financial Fortune (such as the student loan pause later followed by 110k public service forgiveness) and strategic financial moves that finally freed me financially. And now it's 35% of my take-home into retirement.
And of course I made sure to have three months emergency savings set aside..

I got rid of my monthly car payment on Friday (6-9-23) by trading in my 2021 Subaru Crosstrek and getting at 1997 Chevy Silverado work truck with 54k miles on it. I got a check from the equity for $4k and I’ll be using it to further attack my student loans. The truck was basically a barn find that just needs some suspension work, I’m so glad to be rid of the $11k on the car and have a useful vehicle again and saving $300 a month.

Thanks guys, yeah it’s in great shape with barely any rust on the body. It was definitely garage kept because the interior doesn’t have sun fade or cracking. I couldn’t be happier with it, had the biggest grin during the test drive. Its single cab, 8ft bed, with the 4.3 vortec and 5 speed manual.

People think im nuts for keep my 06 ram. Owned since 2010 and I just keep it clean and maintained. Use it for work and home. Its cheaper to maintain and rebuild than replace.

I switched to using my debit card for all purchases last month, after spending years paying my balances in full. It hurt, because I had to pay last month’s balances off along with this month’s expenses. I didn’t realize how much I really put on my cards until I had to pay them off AND pay current bills with my income. Dave’s right when he says that you spend more when it goes on credit, no matter how careful you think you are. Been a Dave follower for over 10 years but thought I was SmaRtEr ThAn DAvE😂🤣😂🤣
I have switched over to debit/cash for the past month after paying off my credit cards. Initially I was bummed at the thought of losing all the cash back, and I did pay them off every month, but looking back it was another justification to use them (but I'll be getting 3% cash back!) and then hating myself when I had to pay those bills each month. Dave is SO right. It is definitely harder to use cash. I have it, it's just the feeling of buying anything makes me cringe a little - I talked myself out of buying a new sponge this last weekend - like this one is still good, it's just a little stinky, I can wash it!. I'm still figuring out the budgeting thing, I hope all settle down soon LOL. But I am definitely spending so much less now and this is the first month, in at least twenty years, that I have zero debt payments due anywhere and guess what...I still have money in my account and I moved money into savings! It's a little weird to get used to seeing all this happening, it feels a little mystical, but if this is what happens with zero debt, I'm here for it!
Hahaha I can relate. But try "scalding the washcloth" - pour a kettle full of boiling water on it in a cup or jar, last thing at night, which kills off any bugs since it's soaking in pretty hot water for >20 minutes. It's an old fashioned thing but effective 💁🏼♀️and u can chuck it in the washing machine for a proper wash too

I have just started on my debt free journey. I just turned 43. I wish I had been taught some common sense for saving and spending when I was younger. I am now realizing I can be debt free by the time I retire, but it is hard to start. I also have a hard time keeping at things. So, I can understand the allure of taking the easy way with things financially, but it is such a rabbit hole. Only now do I realize it is not worth it.
I think a lot of us feel that way. I'm in my 70s and I didn't discover Dave until I was in my 50s. But we're probably going to live till our 90s so there's a lot of time for those investments to compound!

Got a credit card when I was 18 , I am now 69, I have never been late 1 time paying it off each month. But I fully acknowledge their allure and abuse.
We are the luck 22% . Even tho Dave is right on
I know I wasn't late on my credit card, but I did make different purchases because the card was available and "I would have bought that anyway". I know for a fact that I didn't make the best decision because of the convenience.

I've done corporate accounts payable which had me in the position of reimbursing employee expenses. One of the big reasons for having staff (usually sales) use their own credit cards is because they will make very sure they present their expenses for reimbursement in a timely manner. There are other reasons, but that one is a biggie.
47:38 I built and moved in 6 years ago into my own first place, I think the key is having good builders and either knowing exactly what u want before starting the build - or being flexible to save money. And at least I'm living with my own mistakes instead of someone else's design and decor choices 😂
What about people who have the discipline to pay their credit card bills in full, when due? That's like saying don't bother clipping coupons because no one ever became a millionaire clipping coupons.
Then this information isn't entirely for you. I agree credit cards work for some people, but I also understand their philosophy. I'm personally one of those people that has put whole vacations on credit cards and can pay it off come bill day. There's still good info to be learned.
All your doing is getting your vacation paid for by a single mom who had to put diapers on the credit card and got behind. It's an immoral system and participation isn't mandatory.
Some people are credit card people others are absolutely not. 80% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck and use credit cards for emergencies and are lost in car payments and not contributing to retirement.

From what Dave has said, I think 90% of people don't pay them off. But 100% say that they do, lol. I'm sure that there are some who do but the other thing he talks about is that you tend to spend 17% more if you use a credit card to get the points. I don't think that's true of everyone but certainly it's a pretty high percentage.

Turned 27, just passed 500k in net worth. I haven’t paid for a personal flight or hotel in three years, in combination with flight points earned for work travel and credit card points. Only debt is my house.
Do you not travel if this is company protocol? If you use a debit card, you still lose the money if they don’t pay.
I had a great conversation with a friend about credit cards. They told me someone gave them a scorpion. I asked if they held it and they said no but my friend held it. I compared credit cards to pet scorpions. Having a credit card is like holding a scorpion, what does the scorpion do? It stings you! Some people can hold the scorpion but your playing with fire and more often than not you get stung!
everyone I know says that they pay their cards off every month. I'd love to see the statistics of how many people don't because it's probably close to 90%, lol.
Took us forever to get an appraisal in Los Angeles, now we are waiting...and waiting, for the county to asses taxes before we can sell. A nightmare. There was, ABSOLUTELY a need, at least in L.A., last year, for appraisers (ours is commercial property in West L.A.)...and...I've already contacted people through the website to talk to advisors about how to invest it :O) THANKS!
what is forever? is your commercial property complex? there is a lot that goes into it and it may have been held up by the lender which is often the case, there is definitely not a need for appraisers across the country as there is an oversupply of appraisers at the moment.

County requires they asses for taxes before it is sold...cannot even sell to a willing buyer, cuz they are behind, lots of excuses, Covid, they stepped in a hole, tripped on a rock...obfuscation and BS...! And yes, it took MONTHS to get an appraiser just to get a price to list it at...required by law.

1:40 I work for a Fortune 50 company and there was a time when we fronted travel expenses (except for flights). How they issue company cards. It's crazy looking back.
I work for a big national law firm (hopefully I can quit soon). They made me pay for my lawsuits that I filed with my own credit card and not the company’s at first. Super sketchy! I protested when it happened once and I refuse to do that again. We are talking about $550+ a pop!

Have to fast forward the credit card call, no one says it’s the points making you a millionaire but if you use credit cards right you can definitely take advantage of free airfare. He’s right though, most people will spend more with a credit cards but the key word is most. 90% of people shouldnt have credit cards but if you’ve got common sense, you can IMO

Any employer that requires expenses to accrue while employed & providing services for THEIR clients and THEIR company well they should provide you with the funds to do that. The ultimate responsibility should not fall on you. I’ve seen my brother-in-law fight time and time again with his administrative officers over expenses that accrued while he was on a business trip for a company that he does not own!

Guess what 3:36 get a debit card that gives back points. But I wouldn’t take risk like that the employer needs to get a fleet card and take on the risk. Spending $10 to get 25¢😂

It happened in my area starting in the 70s when all the companies moved to Mexico. We had over 100 thriving factories and they all closed. I don't think any jobs are truly secure anymore. and I think 50% of restaurants close in the first two years.
I can pretty much only listen anymore when Rachel is on. The first caller was obviously a new caller with a legit question. And all she got was sarcasm and smart aleck comments. And somewhere in there she got an answer. Sort of. I guarantee Rachel would have just answered the question very informatively without making her feel ridiculous for asking what she obviously felt was a legitimate question. It is just very difficult to listen to routinely anymore 😢

I was so fortunate that in 2016 at the first signs of dementia in my 81 yr old daddy when due to his “ gold digger “ second wife divorcing him because he could no longer be her cash cow,when he pulled his 5 th wheel travel trailer onto our property he was very cooperative about setting up a trust and he had been paying for a long term care policy for 4 1/2 yrs.
He agreed to sell the house he had built for the #2 wife and split proceeds with her so she could leave town!!
He came out of the 20 yr marriage w 3 rentals all paid for.
We gave him 1/4 of our property to park his trailer on these last 7 yrs and I have been his caregiver and property manager,bookkeeper etc etc.
Sadly daddy had an ischemic stroke in 2020 and it escalated his mixed dementia ( Alzheimer’s & vascular)and daddy requires 24 hr care and since my 74 yr old husband has chronic heart problems etc and needs more of my help to run our 35 yr old carpet cleaning business and my own health was going down I have daddy living in an Alzheimer’s unit near me.
What a blessing to us 5 children that daddy prepared ahead w taking out a long term care policy ❤😢 8:46
So, I've done the math...
I paid off my house early with company stock (loan @ 2.25%) and now, after a year, it has cost me a little over $55,000 in lost dividends and appreciation. That could have been my wife's dream car.
Help me feel good about this choice.
We had a company in my city that had been there for 70 years. It changed hands and five years later it went bankrupt. this was back in the 1980s when companies stock was thought to be the gold standard for investing. So people got the stock and kept it and it did well. The company went bankrupt and the stock for one of my friends went from $500,000 to zero in two days. The CEO still got her $4.5 million bonus. Dave says it not more than 10% of your portfolio should be in company stock. And I think that's why he says that. The risk in owning a single stock is just too dangerous and that's why mutual funds with 200 different companies in them balance each other out through the ups and downs. I do understand how you feel, however. But that's why Dave says what he does.
I wish I would have not spent my inheritance money. I was told don't make any big decisions in the first year, I had no support for this.
A friend came into a large inheritance many years ago and spent it all in three years. You are not the only person who did this. Look at all the lottery winners. One of my customers won 5 million which was the largest one in my state at that time. He came in with a mail order bride, and they began loaning money to people. In three years, they were broke. I'm sorry you didn't know about Dave Ramsey back then, but it's only in the past I would say 10 years that he came really well known.

Apparently I’m playing with snakes. Lol my company advances me business expenses. Last 7 vacations been paid by my cash back on business expenses. Plus some $15,000 in cash back earned.

What brand of debit card does Jade use that doesn't also have a credit card, and isn't "predatory"? The problem isnt the card. The problem is people not understanding how to budget. If they spend money differently because they have a different card, they have psychological issues that need to be addressed or they'll be in trouble eventually anyway.
“Some” millionaires have credit cards? I think there’s a fair bit of selection bias in that. I don’t know a millionaire without one.

Actually, I have closed my AMEX platinum. I’ll also close a few others but I’ll keep a few open. I see how “the system” emphasizes the FICO score and for only that reason I will maintain a credit. Otherwise I have bought into the koolaid and I am a follower of the other principles

Now that he’s gone, she has to readjust her lifestyle to her level of income, and it looks like she’s turning to her son to subsidize her. He needs to crack the whip a little bit. The sooner she gets back in line with her financial capabilities, and reality the better it will be for both of them. The condo really should’ve been a one bedroom garden apartment lol.

This guy seems to be confused in regards to becoming a real estate appraiser? It costs more than 2k and the barrier to entry is much higher than becoming a sales agent. It involves quite a bit of education including college, experience hours (min 1,500) & not under one year under the supervision of a certified appraiser, lengthy exam (not easy) In addition to that it takes quite a while to truly understand your market and become an expert in it. Clients will also typically want to see a minimum number of years experience as a certified appraiser before they are comfortable sending work so you will need to work for an appraisal firm for a while, prior to setting up your own practice. Unless it is for private work an agent can't directly refer appraisal assignments.
i feel bad for Tiffany, if the big boss was stealing from the partner she shouldnt lose her job for finally having the courage to speak up... she shouldnt say anything keep her head doen and pay off as much debt as possible until she lands a new job... only then should she tell him
If she does this she could lose some self respect and dignity in herself and would be showing the "weak" boss that she was only interested in helping herself by waiting. She needs to come clean to clear her conscious and its the right thing to do. It sounds like it's eating her up.
Letting a known thief steal for 3 years is the problem. No one should be fired for reporting a theft, but that's presuming that they're reporting at the moment of discovery.

I don't understand why the ability for the employer to reimburse has to do with the question. Whether she pays in cash or credit for the expense, that risk is still there that the employer may not pay. I was looking forward to a real answer to that question, like every other answer to other questions. It's OK to admit you both do not have the answer to her question. No one knows everything.
i've been listening for a long time and he doesn't want you to use your credit card or your debit card. He wants you to use a card that is supplied by the company.

Dave lies when he says "You have absolutely no payments in the world" when you pay off your house. There are still taxes, insurance, utilities, repairs, etc.
Expenses are not the same as “payments”. Payments are debt.

@@GeorgeKamel It's called a tax "Payment" or insurance "Payment". When you pay someone money owed, it's called a payment. When you purchase anything, you owe money. It doesn't matter whether you pay today or tomorrow, or in ten years... it's still a Payment.
I've used credit cards for reimbursement but never had any issues. I'd 100% do it again. If you don't spend ridiculously, you won't have a problem. Also even if the company closed, you would have the same problem as you paid for it already....literally no different.
It’s shady when you work at a big law firm that purports to clear billions of dollars and they still have to make their attorneys spend $550+ out of pocket filing fees for lawsuits…😡 nickel and diming folks with law licenses is a red flag.

Wow! This is an area that i disagree with Dave. I am in step 7 and only charge on CC and pay them off every month. CC also have better protections (fraud, etc)
Debit cards have absolutely the same protection as credit cards - they are still VISA etc. Dave has talked about this many times

The real difference between a debit card and a credit card when it comes to fraud is in how you get your money back. When a fraudulent transaction occurs on your credit card, you have lost no money. You can report the fraud, get a credit on your statement, and the issue will never affect your bank account.
With a debit card, your bank account balance is affected from the moment the fraudulent transaction takes place. If the transactions are significant, you could experience a domino effect of financial headaches. Fraudulent charges can tie up funds so that legitimate charges are declined or cause overdrafts.
Nearly all of today's top credit cards offer zero fraud liability on unauthorized charges, which means you won't owe a penny on any charge determined to be fraudulent. Debit cards also limit your fraud liability but require you to report your lost or stolen card within two business days to limit your liability to $50.
@@thebestthingthatneverhappe6729 Actually, I started following Ramsey in about 1999 and paid off my credit cards (snowballing) and student loans in about 3 years. I saved my house down payment (80/20) and bought my first house (15:year loan).
Today, I sit here with no debt. It's so freeing to have no debt. Yes, I use a credit card that I pay off every 2 weeks. I do so for several reasons, such as international travel and better protections.

@@virginiam8586 Regardless of whether you use a credit or debt card, when there is a fraudulent transaction you are not allowed to make a purchase on that card for two months while they investigate. The card is frozen.

That first caller. Literally ZERO companies pre pay for your expenses if you fill out expense reports. Get real. Don’t yours a credit card if you can’t pay it off. I love Dave. But this is objectively bad advice. I guarantee he reimburses his employees for expenses and those could top several thousands of dollars. Get out of debt. Live on less. Save for the future.
Jews don't tithe. Not in our Torah. We have a charity box but no law to donate a certain percentage.
The practice of tithing first appears in the Torah, not as a commandment, but as a practice done by the patriarchs. After Abraham's military victory over the four kings who attacked Sodom, he gave a tenth of the spoils to "Malkitzedek... priest of G-d". The Midrash also states that Yitzchak tithed his produce.
There are as well: The first Tithe, the second Tithe and Tithes for the Poor (given in the third and sixth year of the seven-year Shemittah (Sabbatical) cycle, maaser ani).
Most of the Tithing is related to agricultural products from the land of Israel, but the practice of tithing still applies to monetary profits. This is called "maaser kesafim", the source and nature of which is a matter of debate. The first mention of maaser kesafim appears in the stories of Abraham and Jacob, but the practices of the patriarchs are not considered obligatory as mitzvahs.
It must be noted that even a custom, when performed three times, becomes obligatory under the category of a neder, a vow. There are those who point out that since most people don't need to separate maaser from produce, everyone should tithe their earnings.
Regardless, everyone must give at least a small portion of money to tzedakah (Charity).
@evasanz3466 tzedakah is not commanded if it brings hardship. Also, it's not tithing. In your references, it's not tithing it's charity to those who believe same. Must look at intent not just action. So is charity only to be given to those who believe as you do? Is charity not for all in need? And yes charity is not exclusive to money, it can be time, talent, produce, product. Etc.

That’s one vacation a year my wife and I don’t pay for just by spending on our credit card. I also have about 2000 on rewards just on one credit card tht can be redeemed as cash. So I’ll keep my credit cards
