"Spain" was composed by Joaquin Rodrigo in 1939 with a long history of instrumental adaptations until keyboard genius Chick Corea wrote the jazz fusion lyrics in 1971 and released the album "Light As A Feather" with Corea (Rhodes electric piano), Flora Purim (vocals and percussion), Stanley Clarke (bass), Airto Moreira (drums), and Joe Farrell (flute), and made it a jazz standard by 1973.
"Spain" was recorded in several versions, by Corea himself as well as by other artists, including a flamenco version by Paco de Lucia, Al Di Meola and John McLaughlin in the 1980s, and a progressive bluegrass version by Bela Fleck in 1979. Corea also performed it as a duo with Japanese pianist Hiromi Uehara.
The phenomenal jazz quartet Manhattan Transfer also did their own version that captured the attention of those who were not really into jazz.
The Light as a Feather version of "Spain" received two Grammy nominations, for Best Instrumental Arrangement and for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance by a Group. In 2001, Corea was awarded the Best Instrumental Arrangement Grammy for "Spain for Sextet and Orchestra".
Al Jarreau came into the picture much later when Chick Corea corroborated with him and with Artie Marten to rewrite the song into jazz fusion, and Jarreau made this popular during his world tour in an album titled "I Can Recall" in 1980. In my humble opinion, Gary Valenciano's cover is far more challenging than that of Al Jarreau because he scatted all the instrumental parts while Jarreau did not.

That was his signature song when he was starting out at Tavern in the Square in the early 80s. Used to watch him singing. He’s in his mid 50s and has grandchildren already!
This is why he was branded in the philippines as the one and only Mr Pure Energy. Thumbs up if you agree that he still lives to his title, because i sure do. 😁 this guy is always gonna be my favorite singer. He had gotten even better through time. Here's an interesting connection. Gary V was in the jury panel when KZ auditioned for The Voice PH. Gary was very impressed with KZ. Loved Doe's reaction! I was mesmerized the first time I watched this video. I feel he deserves a vacation after that performance.

I'm so fortunate to have witnessed Gary's beginning as a performer when he was a college student in La Salle in the 80s. He performed Billy Jean & Beat It complete with Michael Jackson's moves and singing style in the gymnasium before he became a professional singer. I knew without a shadow of a doubt that he would be a big superstar and he did accomplished stardom in less than a year after he graduated in college. Kuh featured Gary in one of her major concerts in Folk Arts Theatre when Gary was not known then during that time. That was his first major exposure to the public and the Filipinos fell in love with him almost in an instant.
He is also one of the kindest, humble & down to earth artists I've known. He's a true Christian. He's very polite & respectful since college days and stardom didn't change him at all. He treats people with dignity & respect. I just have a hard time digesting that he's already a grandfather but he could still dance like Michael Jackson's moonwalking and all that crazy moves that would surely put me 6 feet below the ground😂

@The Almighty Martz ..........his mother who was from my area in puerto rico used to sing for the manila orchestra back in the 60's. I'm assuming that is the person who trained him to sing. I was told that he performed in PR for a Billy Graham christian concert and turned it out. The man has skills !!
