Today, most people in The Netherlands love Japan: the Dutch youth prefers anime over Western cartoons, a lot of grownups drives a Japanese car and we REALLY love the Japanese cuisine over here. I know that a lot of Japanese people love The Netherlands because of our tulps, infrastructure and food (especially the tulps and infrastructure).

Yes King Alexander should bow to the Emperor of Japan . But Japan and the Netherlands have a very long common history and are in excellent terms , and the Emperor of Japan and King Alexander do actually like each other . Japan is the oldest monarchy still in existence and without discontinuity in its lineage , so technically, everybody should bow to them , but this is a matter of choice today . I had the privilege to meet them and i bowed at 90 degrees , but i did it not only because my family is old aristocracy and this was my duty to bow , not only because i am married to a Japanese and out of respect felt that i had to bow too, but mostly because i have the dearest affection and respect for the Emperor and his wife , they are truly a lovely couple and beloved by so many . I am extremely happy that the Emperor is given the right to abdicate in 2020 , and that his son will take the succession . Normally the emperor has to die for the son to get on the throne , but Emperor Akihito is an elderly gentleman now with some health issues and deserves a rest . I can only wish him and his wife and wonderful retirement from public life and a very private life after that .
I can't wait for the ceremony of enthronement of the new Emperor of Japan , very few are given the chance to witness this , especially since this will be the first time in Japanese history that an emperor retires and witnesses the enthronement of his successor in 1400 years . Plus a 20 days holiday offered to everyone in Japan (which is a HUGE holiday for the Japanese) and on top of that this is the year of the Tokyo Olympics . 2020 is definitely going to be a Japanese year and i am not missing one bit of it .

Monarchs do not bow to other monarchs, whether they be emperors, kings, queens, or princes as would be the case in Monaco for instance. They are heads of state, and are therefore equal. In written correspondence, they refer to each others as 'cousins', even though they aren't actual cousins.
