  • Ever wondered what American Girls I own? Well, here ya go! This video covers all the American Girl dolls, play sets and outfits I own. The dolls were purchased by me between 1993-1996. I am a fan of Pleasant Company dolls, so I do bash Mattel a bit in this video. But, honestly, I think the quality and values of the company were way better when Pleasant Company ran things. :) Who's your favorite American Girl? Which kind do you prefer: Pleasant Company or Mattel? Share your thoughts below!

I've been researching AG once again because I looooved them when I was younger. Even though I'm nearly 23, I still was a part of the generation that poured over the catalogs because my family didn't get the internet yet. It's disheartening to see so many historical dolls not on their market anymore! Thankfully I see Kit, which is one of mine, but she doesn't have anyyyy of her furniture still available, and she shows up in a different Meet outfit. It's so interesting to see the changes. Now that I'm older I can actually collect things if I wanted. I couldn't get my parents to buy much at all hahaha. It would be so fun to have a whole set to just display with my dolly Kit!

I love American Girl, SO MUCH as I have 127 American girl dolls , this also includes 14 Bitty Babies and 17 Bitty Twins. I have American Girl Transition dolls, Pleasant Company and Mattel American Girl dolls. My favorite type of American Girl doll is the Mattel dolls I like their features more and in my opinion they are a little prettier than Pleasant Company and Transition American Girl dolls.

As a late ‘79 baby and one completely entranced by that damn PC catalogue ca 1989-92, I’m loving finding my kin here!! I recently bought a Mattel AG Doll for my 5yo, and now that I’m DEEP down the rabbit hole of AG collectors, I’m loving all these details of the OG PC dolls. To spend the adult money on an eBay Molly and finally fulfill my childhood dream? Girl it is TEMPTING. (Btw DYING over that 90s Girl of Today desk. Please tell me it came preinstalled with a floppy of Oregon Trail.)

My younger sister was given a Pleasant Company Molly for her birthday a couple of years back and I've honestly grown to love the PC dolls so much more than the Mattel ones because of her. Her face is just so sweet and round and innocent-looking and compared to my Mattel girls that I actually now prefer the older ones! I'm actually looking at getting a PC Samantha at the moment but it's such a hard decision because they're all so gorgeous.

I used to have a Pleasant Company Addy in 1994, but she was damaged by an adult in 2002. I replaced her with an American Girl "Mattel Addy" in 2015, Although I no longer had a PC Addy I still kept all of the Pleasant Company clothing.
Your dolls are in great condition. Great video.
The back of the neck on the Mattel dolls say American Girl.

I had to save up my allowance for my doll and dresses, too! I saved for months to be able to pay for half the cost of the Samantha doll, and my parents chipped in for the other half the cost as a birthday present for me. From then on, I’d save my $5 allowance earned from completing chores each week, and would be able to purchase one dress (at $20 a pop!) after a month of saving. I was able to collect all of Samantha’s dresses, and many of her accessories, over time; but a lot of bathrooms were cleaned and floors were vacuumed to get there! 😅

I have over 40 American Girls. I started collecting in 1992 and never stopped! I love both the PC dolls and Mattel dolls. I had to get (again) both Samantha and Molly becaUe someone stole them but I had a pleasant company Samantha and a mettle Molly. Now I’ll have a Pleasant Company Molly doll but I’ll cherish her so much.
(Edit) I agree with you Pleasant Company has more quality than Metel does but in the start of 2010’s they started to become more and more less quality and became more cheap and it feels like they just want money nowadays because (I’ve heard) that their sells are declining now.

Having 30 dolls and 10 AG brand dolls like Bitty Baby, Our New Baby, Bitty Twins, Hopscotch Hill, etc., I think I can say I love Pleasant Company but prefer Mattel, just because of the Vinyl becoming weird after a few years, eyes (even though I LOVE the brown lashes), and the thinning of the wigs. Also some of the PC bodies became Flimsy and stuffing became odd after many years, like my Samantha, which I went to fix her up and her body split open! So that’s why I prefer Mattel over PC. Transitional period dolls are nice too, but most of them are taller then the other dolls, like Marisol and Jess and Transitional number 4, so Mattel clothing from 2007-2018 are hard to fit those girls. Also, if I had to choose between PC or Mattel clothing and accessories, I’m PC all the way! But that’s just my opinion on these girlies, I love them!

Mattel has changed the face mold of the historical dolls. The faces are softer-featured. One by one, they phased out the original dolls and accessories and replaced them with Mattel's version. The GOT (Girl of Today) evolved into GOTY (Girl of the Year). My problem with Pleasant Company and Mattel's 18 inch dolls are the "cankles" the dolls have. I much prefer (and it IS a personal preference) the Journey Girls sold by Toys R Us. Their bodies are slightly slimmer and they are far more affordable. The other problem I have with Mattel's version of the AG doll is that, until this year, the GOTY dolls were light-haired, light-skinned, light-eyed cheerleaders, dancers, bakers, and other girly pursuits. I've written Mattel repeatedly that not all girls--not even Caucasian ones--are all light-skinned and light-haired. This year, to their credit, Mattel produced as the GOTY Luciana Vega, a girl who aspires to live on Mars and is interested in STEM classes. Mattel worked with NASA to be as accurate as possible with the space suit, flight suit, and accessories. So, Bravo Mattel!!!

    • @Kewpie83

I'm not crazy about the Luciana doll, but the accessories are pretty neat!

Kewpie 83--I had wanted to be an astronaut. In my day, females weren't admitted to the astronaut program. By the time NASA permitted women into the training, I was too old. I became, first, a mechanical engineer and then a teacher. Since that time, I have advocated for women's rights to choose professions without regard to gender. I may not like the AG dolls, but the fact that Mattel is finally advocating girls in STEM classes with higher aspirations than cheer leading or dance (and there is nothing inherently wrong in those activities!) matters .

The newer American have American girl on their neck. My guess is that the name American girl is more value for these dolls than Mattel. I received a Pleasant Company doll today from Ebay. I would love to know who she was. She may have had a hair cut as her hair is verily short. She has brown hair with banks, blue grey eyes she came with no clothes

    • @onemercilessming1342

@@nancybates2508--I'd check the archives of both Pleasant Company and Mattel. If "American Girl" is on the neck of the Mattel dolls, my guess is to distinguish the doll's head from the countless number of AG-clone dolls that are on the market today. MyLife from Walmart. Gotz dolls/ Pottery Barn kids. Our Generation from Target. Newberry dolls from K-mart (out of business now). Style Girl from Big Lots. Journey Girls from ToysRUs (out of business now). Then there are the ones available at Costco, too. Don't discount a loving parent or grandparent purchasing an AG doll and having the hari re-rooted or the eyes changed out to look more like the little darling for whom the doll was intended. www.e.joz3d.net/pages/History.html bing.com/images

Thank you for such an informative video. Could you shed any light in the PC made in West Germany historical dolls? Why would Mattel not continue the historical line? Any thoughts or opinions? Reminds me of Disney purchasing the Makie doll line, advertising it was coming to the United States then doing nothing with it. Very disappointing, when Mattel took over the AG line we quit collecting, it lost its charm and historical significance.

    • @Kewpie83
      @Kewpie83  Před 5 lety +2

I don't own any of the West Germany dolls, so I can't really speak on them! I think Mattel honestly just doesn't care about the historical aspect of it or all the extra stuff that goes along with the historical line (like the books, craft sets, etc). They don't really care about the educational aspect of the dolls.

I have Caroline, Samantha, Nellie, Rebecca and Kit. I have a lot because I have been collecting since I was 7. Caroline was one of the last dolls to come out in the historical line before the beforever line came. Yes there is 2 different Carolines there the historical one (which is mine) and the beforever line. I have the 2015 beforever Samantha, early mattle Nellie and a Rebecca made in 2015. The Mattel red hair is definitely a "truer" red as opposed to the Pleasant Co carrot red, but the PC eyes are a more natural green. Mattel green eyes are the "knock your socks off" green. I've been told the Beforever red hair is even darker??? I definitely prefer the Pleasant Co Felicity ^^

$2.00 x 12 months = $24.00, & the dolls were 75, so it would take more than a year to save up? Too bad you didn't have a neighbor to do chores for..I know some girls that collected recycling.
Oh you said birthday and communion $..got it.

I think when these dolls first came out- people should have demanded that they have at least a vinyl chest. That clothe peeking out around the neck really bugs me. The dolls are cute but I always steered kids away from them because they cost too much for such cheap/lazy construction. I guess you really have to love them to overlook that issue.

I tend to suggest getting dolls like A Girl for All Time over AG nowadays, too.

Hi , I'm a fan been watching ya'll for porobally five years. I just got into American girl in August and have thirteen of them and three bity baby. I'm blessed because I live near a good will outlet and buy them by the pound! so I pay about 1.50 for each American girl right now I have two julies, ones in perfect shape one has a tiny hair trim but not bad, two ivy's, one modern Samantha 2014 release and one pleasant . a 1999 number three pleasant company , josefina pleasant company, addy pleasant, kaya pleasant company . I have to braid her hair though anyway its been fun collecting I have two make your own mattel ones one has Julie's face and she's black and straight hair and one has kits face and currly long blonde hair . One thing weird is the number three from 99 is like pale pale wonder if anyone's heard of that happening almost has a yellow tint or gaundish look for some reason I like it because she's different

@@kitschycadet4689 Addy was the 5th doll, Josefina was the 6th. After that was the sellout to Mattel.
