Have you ever wondered, "how can I help my baby learn to roll over?" If so, you're absolutely not alone. As a Pediatric Physical Therapist who owns her own mobile baby Physical Therapy practice, where I go into the homes of mamas to help them help their babies move better -- this is one of my most favorite things to help with. In this video, you'll learn a few of my favorite techniques along with why helping your baby learn to roll over can help them walk and in other future milestones.
*if you have any concerns about how your baby is moving, please contact your pediatrician and request a movement screen or evaluation by a pediatric physical therapist.

      Wambui Munyao,
Thank you so much for the comment. Premie babies often take a bit to catch up to their full term same age peers. Due to the prematurity, you are looking at gross motor milestones in the 4 month range. This is a really helpful handout if no one has mentioned how to calculate adjusted age with you yet: www.unmc.edu/media/mmi/jackson/TIPS-Intro/Understanding_Corrected_Age.pdf It also gives a few tips on how to talk with family and friends about milestones (which I thought might be helpful!). At four months, it is not uncommon to not have full head control, however, if a baby struggles significantly with head control and is not yet putting weight through their elbows in tummy time, it is best to speak with a physician as well as reach out to a pediatric physical therapist or physiotherapist in your area. I will post a few additional videos on exercises that can help develop head control, but it is absolutely best to have a provider work with you and your babe directly if that is an option in your area.

General advice I give to all parents of kiddos working on head control is this:
Tummy time for up to 60 minutes per day (going to tolerance but adding in multiple opportunities for those 60 minutes to add up even if it's only a 1-3 minute per episode). It is easier for babies if their head/shoulders is higher than their hips.
Playing with the baby on the floor with supervision (and avoiding containers for no longer than 15 minutes at a time and less than 2 hours per day).
Playing in supine (reaching for feet, playing with an object in both hands) and sidelying (both sides: this allows hands to come together).

I hope this is helpful! Please let me know if any of these help or if you have additional questions. Lauren
