"She always did love to dance."
Summer Glau's first profession was as a ballerina. Unfortunately, a broken toe ended her career in ballet - she can no longer dance en pointe - so she made a new career for herself as an actor. When we see River hiding on the ceiling, using nothing but her muscles and friction to cling there, that's Summer Glau doing EXACTLY that; she is that strong.
All of River's fight scenes are actually Summer Glau dancing. In her final fight with the reavers I've heard that she found out the camera man was also a dancer, so they choreographed the fight as a pas de deux, a dance of two people, in this case Summer and the camera, with occasional extras getting in the way of Summer's foot or hand. Which is how they could film it in one long take, with no cuts - the choreography made sure that the camera was always in the right place, pointed in the right direction.

The stunt scenes (including the one where River is on the ceiling) are *all* done by Summer herself. The roof bit was measured so she could do the splits between the walls (she has serious gymnastics/dance training, so she had the flexibility to do it). According to the commentary on the dvd, Summer was asked "what she could do" by the stunt team, so the main fight was based on that. The reverse flip kick was done without a wire and the leg kick to Jayne was done with her just standing there unaided xD I met her irl. She is so tiny, but so lovely as a person 💜

Oh! I forgot. The fight scene at the end where you see Mal hit the floor with his face. Most of the swelling is, in actual fact real! He'd been throwing himself down so hard in previous takes, that when he got his make up touched up, the make up artist went "This is really good special effects..! Wait..!" The bloodshot eye looks that realistic cos he was wearing contacts and the dye used to make the effect got behind it and made that effect.

For me, River's fight with the Reavers has become more intense the more I think about it. Basically, she's using her mind-reading power to know what her opponents are about to do, which is obviously a great advantage in combat. But it also means that she's being assaulted with the full force of their malice and hunger and god knows what else. Plus, because her amygdala has been surgically removed she can't ignore any of it (ep9 Ariel). By the time the Alliance bursts through the wall, she's probably on a knife's edge between human and Reaver and the look in her eyes gives me chills every time I see it.

So, the actor who played Wash, he did a series called Con Man that was basically a story about himself having been on a short-lived TV series that became a cult favorite and went on the convention circuit. I consider it an unofficial sequel to Firefly, even though it's more of a comedy about scifi actors. There's a _lot_ of cameos in it, from Firefly and from other popular scifi shows. I recommend it. If you want more of Mal, he starred in Castle after this, and they did a lot of Firefly references.

I strongly recommend finding a copy of the graphic novel, "Serenity: The Shepherd's Tale," which fills in some of Book's backstory. I'd've rather seen it played out with Ron Glass (RIP), but it's MUCH better than nothing.
Also, apparently Nathan Fillion is negotiating a potential trilogy of "Firefly" made-for-TV movies. At best, it'll be a couple years in the making (if we ever see them at all), but there's a chance.

Seeing the movie, I could understand Zoe's reaction to Wash's death.
On the morning of Dec 11, 2000, I was waiting to hear from my mother at the hospital. The phone call came, and all she said was, "He's gone".
    My father had died.
I replied, "You want me to come pick you up?"
    She said, "are you okay?"
me: "Yeah, I'm fine. You want me to come pick you up?" I think she was a bit startled at how calm I was.
The rest of that morning, I was a robot. An eerily calm robot. I made arrangements to get paid so I could afford my father's cremation, made the arrangements for the cremation, discussed plans with my mother... all calm and completely emotionless.
I went upstairs to take a shower... got out... got halfway across the room and literally collapsed on the floor sobbing. My mind had told me that his death had been dealt with, and I had the luxury of mourning.
Then I heard my mother from downstairs, on the phone with my brother, "oops... there goes ". She'd heard from downstairs.
Immediately, the tears dried up, and the robot was back.
Instinctively I had subconsciously known I had to suppress my emotions to get my mother through this day.
There's a time for mourning, and a time for dealing with life.
Zoe could mourn later. First, she had to turn to face (in the words of Kipling) the immediate need of things.

Regarding the questions about Book, his backstory is explained in a graphic novel. I think Joss realized it was the one big unanswered question that remained after the movie.

My favorite bit of trivia from this movie is the phrase used to make River go to sleep. It's a Russian idiom, roughly: "that's for the chickens to laugh at". Basically like saying "that's ridiculous". It's interesting that they chose a Russian idiom, in the Russian language, to use as a safe word. As we've seen in the show and movie, English and Mandarin are the two main languages spoken by everyone in the 'Verse. We haven't really encountered any Russians or Russian speakers, although presumably other ethnic cultures did make it off of Earth and into the Firefly 'Verse, like Irish people. But Russian may very well be a dead language, or very uncommon, and the phrase is very unlikely for River to ever encounter once they finished doing whatever they did to her and sent her out on missions. It would require the three very unlikely coincidences of River encountering somebody who knew Russian, and somebody with enough knowledge of Russian idioms to use that particular one, and somebody happening to use that idiom in casual conversation. All-in-all, very unlikely, at least in the Firefly 'Verse.

It is an emotional meatgrinder for us brown coats and none of use will ever be ok with losing Wash. The suddenness of Wash's loss and the speed with which they had to move on and keep performing is a feature soldiers experience in war...and Zoe was used to war. But the movie did answer a lot of questions and tie up some storylines. We all wish we had more of this, but we make do with sharing it vicariously through reactors like yourself.

Welcome to the sadness that is no more Firefly... But if you wanna see more of some of the cast:
    - Nathan Fillion: Dr. Horribles Sing-Along Blog (short musical feat. Neil Patrick Harris)
    - Summer Glau: Terminator - The Sarah Connor Chronicles (super underappreciated and, like Firefly, gone way too soon)
    - Jewel Staite: Stargate Atlantis (season 4 and 5, character similar to Kaylee, but repairing humans instead of engines)
    - Morena Baccarin: Stargate SG1 (season 10 and movie The Ark of Truth) and the series V, where in both she shows her abillitiy to play darker, yet still elegant characters
Sure, there is way more and newer stuff of everyone, but these are some of my personal favorites.

As someone else mentioned, Book's story is told in a graphic novel (very interesting) and there is another graphic novel that shows that at the time of the movie, Zoe was pregnant with Wash's child though she did not know at the time. That story is of the small child and Zoe (it helps to ease some of the loss, I found)

Fun fact. In Castle, when Castle (Nathan Filion) started speaking Mandarin. Kate asked him where he learned how to speak Mandarin and he said at my last job, a shout-out to Firefly.

There is a fairly expansive extended universe, namely books and comics, that fill in some of the holes. There's a comic backstory for Book, we get to see Wash as he was in school to be a pilot, one of the books even shows Mal being put on trial by an underground contingent of surviving Browncoats that accuse him of being a traitor. On the tragic side though, one of the comics reveals that Zoe was in fact pregnant during the events of Serenity, Wash may be gone, but he and Zoe had a daughter.
