  • With over 2,000 workers and 119 miles under construction, high-speed rail is firmly taking shape in California. Today, the California High-Speed Rail Authority is overseeing 4 construction packages in the Central Valley, which will become the backbone for the state's modern rail network. Join us for a construction tour near Fresno while we're led by a guide from WSP USA, the "rail delivery partner" for the Authority.

    America has millions of people that are handicapped, fear flying, and prefer to travel by trains.
    short distances, i.e. 400 to 500 miles between highly congested cities. i.e. Raleigh NC, Charlotte and Atlanta would be feasible. The Interstate 85 corridor is one of the most congested routes in America.

    As a voter for this project, I'm glad that I got to see this video of the progression. I heard negative things about the HSRR over the years and it was a waste of millions of dollars and to see how far the construction has come is very exciting. Special shoutouts to those construction workers who endure the summer heat and cold weather working hard, I appreciate you all!

      @@gooser__43 Sure dude, roads totally are better than rail, and are totally not heavily subsidized and an inefficient waste of space that is known to cause racial discrimination back in the 60s.
      When Japan built their rail, it was heavily over budget, but to this day, it is one of the most profitable railway networks on earth. The State of California is an optimal place to put rail, and on the long run, this will be cheaper than road transport.
      Assume that you are a Californian. To pay the entire thing out, every person would just need to ride the thing once for 32 years (assuming $80-100 budget), and people are bound to use this more since the entire state is in need of better transportation systems, and the argument that the entire freeway could've been fixed is such a closed-minded and inefficient POV. The entire US freeway system is over budget in the first place.

    • @unassumingaccount395
      @unassumingaccount395 Před 5 lety +3

      @@gooser__43 That's the thing, whether you are democrat or not, it's going to be such a waste of time, money, and space, to stop the entire project when they have already found the root causes of many of these mismanagement issues, plus the HSR authority already has a proper roadmap set for 2030.
      The reason why many Californians are fine with this project more than not is because of the story of the BART. The same group of republican, for-privatization, conservative businessmen disapproved of the project because it was considered over-budget at that time. Many people were opposed, in fact just as much as now, but once the entire project was done, the BART became profitable because a lot of people underestimated how much they would use it. At this point most of the overpriced budget has been paid off.
      That's why people are fine with this, because most feasibility studies point to the HSR going the same way as the bart: overpriced, opposed by many, but will end up working anyways and be paid off.
      The HSR is needed more than a fix of the entire freeway system because California is a heavily congested state, moreso than most states. Each city in california is in such an optimal distance from each other so that a rail network would be needed. Airports and freeways are going to be inefficient solutions due to induced demand if they are further expanded.
      Rail takes up less space, prevents emissions, and brings more people around than cars will ever do. The Shinkansen network of the European Rail Network brings billions every year for such lesser space.
      In the long run, rail is going to be solution considering how much it can easily be paid off with the demand there is for it.

To my memory, various special interests have blocked the development of this type of project in California as far back as the 60s. It would have cost a lot less and would have been far less complex had it been done then. @@iZipTiedMyPenisToABrick there is no progress without taking private land. Everybody's just gotten a thousand times more possessive and paranoid about it. Wonder how much private land was used in the fifties to build the Interstate system which is now dilapidated, constantly under construction, glutted with traffic 24/7 in many metropolitan places. We know how widening freeways went...more cars. And now that the airlines are either going under, or having to rethink everything, it's probably a good time to rethink air travel which, I'm sure you would agree, has become a living nightmare. Have you every ridden high speed rail anyplace? Japan, France, China? Sacrifices were made. But the efficiency, operational costs, passenger comfort with zero delays and screwed up schedules are a thing of the past. It is THE most efficient and affordable way to move people and is getting better.

    It seems to me that when an enterprise, whether private or state, hire a contractor to build a building, bridge, or other projects, the contractor, almost always, agrees to complete the project by a certain date and for a stated cost or pay a penalty if they don't meet the terms of the contract. Am I wrong to think that a man as savvy as Jerry would indeed include that clause in the contract to build this train set?

    • @TohaBgood2
      @TohaBgood2 Před 2 lety

      All of that is in the contracts. The construction companies that are building this are specialized on mega projects like this. They have lawyers, you know. And those lawyers are paid to find ways to make them more money for less work. And they do, because this is a standard state infrastructure contract and there are known holes in the system. Tutor Perini is a particularly egregious filer of change orders and knows how to both get and then to milk state projects. I would love to see the owner and his cronies in jail, but that's probably not going to happen, because lawyers.
      Also, you do understand that there is a very well organized and funded Republican legal opposition on a scale we have never seen before for what is essentially a jobs project for their home turf in the Central Valley. They have caused about 80% of the costly cascading delays driving the costs on this project into the stratosphere.

I like road trips. if the rail is actually completed, it'll open the freeway up for me and my road trips. which will be fine. however, I will have to put up with the semis on the freeways... they won't be able use the rail. that is until the rail starts going bankrupt and the CA gov't starts to use the rail for business purposes to cover expenses. airlines do this with some package shipments to supplement their costs (this I know because I was trained with shipping hazardous materials). so more hazardous materials will be shipped with nonhazardous materials and people. then, in my opinion (again) it will mainly be a means for cargo to be shipped from LA to SF (areas) with some people. it'll be like freight/cargo ships are now. this will be the case because the freighters will pay just a touch more than the people will based on cost per space. again, my opinion.
