  • In today's video I talk about the possible sale of the Indiana Stellantis factory as an update to our story on the Mexico factories. Employees have been reaching out with information.
What do you think, is this Stellantis Cutting and selling assets the begining of the end of Stellantis in America?

Kokomo has 4 operating plants currently. We have 2 transmission plants, one engine plant, and one casting plant. All UAW plants. There was an additional 5th plant 20 minutes south in Tipton that closed late last year. We also have a brand new joint venture battery plant in Kokomo that is currently under construction and was promised to be UAW linked to the four remaining plants. In Kokomo we are hearing the same rumors by some upper managers while others dismiss them. It wouldn't suprise me as these factories are a target for him to get back at our UAW President Shawn Fain. Kokomo is Fain's hometown and his original local. Many of us feel like this is a personal attack at how Fain acted and what was said during our last contrast negotiations. This town at one time was the largest local UAW in the Stellantis/Jeep/Dodge Family. We are hoping our International UAW will address this ASAP and do whatever is necessary to protect our jobs and future work. Time will tell.

Since I have NO skin in the game so I am asking this question as an outside observer. So I ask the question? I need a CHEAP car. As a software engineer, my work for the most part has been outsourced overseas and fortunately it doesn't affect me much. NO ONE raises a big stink that well paying software jobs are being outsourced overseas. SO WHY should car workers be any different?
This is just general advice. Your grandfather was a UAW worker and got a great retirement. Your father was a UAW worker and got a good retirement. You as a UAW worker might make it to a so so retirement. BUT and GET it in YOUR son's head. Your son will be lucky to be a UAW worker and probably won't get a retirement.
My father saw the handwriting on the walls back in the early 80s so I and my brothers didn't end up working in the factory.
China can probably ship over a cheap car for under $20K. Granted it will be a piece of junk built by cheap almost slave labor. I don't see us building a car for under $40K with UAW labor wages.

I was just in Kokomo for the Chrysler 300 Club International Spring 2024 Meet in May. I learned a lot while I was there, enjoyed meeting local people, thank you! Major take away - Indiana was home to most of the nascent auto industry, and vast skilled labor/precision machining industry, before Detroit was even on the map. A lot of infrastructure and manufacturing facilities are still in place but I suspect many are either vacant, or running one vs. two to three shifts, not on account of any deficiency of local talent or work ethic, it based on poor corporate and political decision making which has only accelerated in the late 40-50 years. Really a shame since most of my prized vehicles that actually exude class and engineering excellence, were born from places like Kokomo, certainly not Mexico or China.

These brands have little to no value. If Stellantis can sell Dodge/Chrysler they certainly will. It's not like selling Coca Cola. No line formed to buy Oldsmobile, Pontiac, Saturn, etc. Not sure why one would form now. Nothing but headaches that would require enormous infusions of capital. Cost to borrow is not favorable at the moment and VC would have zero interest in a dying industry.

Always have to make it political. What about Trump promising all of those GM auto workers in Ohio that their jobs were secure under his presidency. Then they closed. Trouble is we cannot compete on a cost of labor scale period. GM makes a number of their vehicles in Korea. with a three percent US content. Those workers should have realized this. Comes down to Corp. greed nothing more.

Was the factory a profitable asset? Many major companies/corp are doing a lot of belt tightening over the next 18-24months
.Stellantis wants to make 30% cost reduction
if the factory is redundant and there is other ones doing the same thing
sell it off
there are a lot of hard choices ahead
Carlos Tavares job as a CEO is to save the company and keep investors happy..and when u see numbers like he’s paided 40 million
.that’s rarely in actual cash..it’s usually in stock
which is locked up for a number of yrs
.before he can withdraw it
.its in his own interests for Stellantis to survive

The Chinese are very patient. If they feel now is the right time to find a way into our market they will make a move. CDJR would be a prime target with Carlos deciding to cut costs by 30%. They might only take Dodge to get their feet in the door. However, they may let things get worse. New vehicles are not selling with the increase in prices, interest rates, and a weak general economy. My opinion is that they may wait until the next presidential election and see what policy changes occur. If they can get a foothold in the U.S. market with cheap but drivable vehicles the big U.S. automakers may be in for a rude awakening. One cannot also rule out the Chinese finding a way to influence our politicians to get their way. I will leave how the influence might happen to your imagination.
