  • The Skoda Yeti is finished production and being replaced by the Skoda Karoq. Before the Yeti drives off into the sunset me and Sinead McCann from CarsIreland.ie thought we would give it one last hurrah. We drove to Donegal and took it over mountains and into the sea.

I'm really sorry they didn't make a real successor to Yeti. It's the smartest car I've owned. After seven years and 192,000 km with a 2,0 Tdi DSG 4x4, half of it in the Finnish winter, I test drove the Karoq. Fine, but far too much on-screen, touch-screen stuff. High waistline = poor visibility and reach to parking meters etc. Far less utilitarian. In the end I found a 2015 Yeti with my specs and 102,000 km less. Now that I know how well they were built, I was ready for my first secondhand car since 1983! Loads of cash saved. Motor journalists label Karoq as Yeti's successor. I hope not, I sincerely hope the rumored small Skoda SUV will retain the more spartan, utilitarian values of Yeti rather than becoming a late-born near-twin to the T-Roc - Arona litter of excessively stylized and electronics-laden cars.

My Yeti is also 7 years old. Driven in India. Daily Driver. Mostly city commute but quite a bit of highway and a bit of off road or soft road and hill driving too. Used as a people carrier and a semi utility vehicle. Used also to ferry my dogs. It is easily the best vehicle I have ever owned because of its simple utilitarian nature. 140BHP 2 litre Diesel 4x4. There is NOTHING in the market right now that comes close, hence I’m hanging on to it since I have absolutely no alternative!

I own a 2010 2.0 170 Yeti. Current mileage is 305,000. Had the car for three years and apart from service items I’ve only replaced wiring to the doors and fitted an EGR valve. Not bad going for this mileage. I would never buy a Karoq or a Kodiaq simply for the reason they have no character, they look like dozens of other cars. You have to get really close to realise it’s a Skoda by checking the badge. Who would pay 30k upwards for a totally anonymous looking motor? Love the Yeti, it’s just such a class act, no contest !!

I've had my yeti for over 7 years now and 277 thou kms. I have lost count of the number of people who ask about it, so many here in Australia don't know what it is. It fits my needs perfectly, and has been the most reliable and rattle free car I've yet owned, despite being one of the cheaper ones when new. I have no idea what to replace it with, so during Covid downtime I modified it extensively from the Skoda/VW/Audi parts bin, added lots of aftermarket bits, and now have a 5 second diesel that handles and goes around corners better than it should. So much fun to drive a Rubik's cube go-cart. I don't think I will ever get rid of it, and I've had some nice cars that once the 3 years were up, moved them on.

I think Skoda are leaving behind alot of future classics, Octavia Vrs 100, Felicia Fun, Roomster Scout, Mk1 Fabia Vrs, Mk1 Superb 2.8 V6 L&K?

Abominable, imo, that Skoda are retiring the Hairy Beast. :( Great review though guys. :)

Indeed,I love mine,I think the mk2 was very drab styling, they took away that fun edgy styling,I've a mk1 4x4, 2.0tdi 140bhp 6speed manual, best of the bunch in my humble opinion....

The old one is much cooler looking than the boring updated version. The camera shakes a lot, and it doesn't look like a bad road. I'm sure the suspension is be stiff and uncomfortable. I desperately want a 4WD, and especially the Yeti, but I might just buy another Citroën C5 with hydraulic suspension instead. I hate stiff and hard uncomfortable cars. And the Yeti for sure don't look too comfortable. It is also very worrying that it is a car from the VW group. Volkswagen makes uncomfortable cars, like my dads shaky Passat. But I do love the look of the Yeti, plus the size, the loading capasity, the clear view to all sides, the relatively low price and of course that it has 4x4. I could of course test drive one.

Not sure why you think it would be uncomfortable. I have long term back problems and when I’m in agony I go for a three hour drive in the Yeti. That’s me cured for the next month or two. Best car made since 2000 in my view. I’ll be keeping my diesel 4x4 forever...

Well, I feel extremely sorry for the next poor owner of that Yeti. As good as they are and like any other vehicle, they can not cope with the saltwater damage you now have inflicted on it on it. In not too many years to come, it will dissolve into the ground from whence it came. So it been a year now already, I wonder what it looks like now.

It looks just fine, the Skoda team fixed it all up and now it's with a very happy owner. Cars get sea water on them the whole time, it's an easy thing to mind.

I got my mechanic to put 2 gallons of waxoyl (heated and applied by spray gun) I'm just real fussy,am hoping it'll keep it sound for years, calling it a future collector car so it won't do any harm

Renault 9 could also do all that with no 4x4.
