It's great to learn so much lore from you. I played Myst and Riven as a kid and I was just looking for a simple playthrough but I'm loving to hear how knowledgable you are about the characters and locations.
I watched the first two episodes of this LP when it was new, and quit, because I was dismayed by the lethargic pace you were using. Watching it again though (in a better state of mind), I appreciate it now. One downfall of Myst is that it's only new once. The wonder wears off after the first few play-thru's. However, your methodical, explorative LP is helping me relive the same wonder I felt as an impressionable 15-year-old plugging in my brand new CD-ROM for the first time. Thanks so much
@JohnSavant To him it's not really an elaborate puzzle, as long as he remembers the combination. One way that these puzzles make a bit more sense is if you think of them as Atrus being afraid he'd forget the access codes and used something that was already there (in this case his sound-based experiments) to set up a reminder. Except the disadvantage is that now anyone else can find out your access code too. :)
Oh, I just realized something! The sounds are based off the four elements: Wind, Water, Earth, and Fire. With, of course, Time thrown in for good measure.
Until we saw the wind symbol I thought the order was written in the icons. Two drops on the water to mark it as second, 3 lines of heat or smoke on the fissure, four dots on the clock and the middle line on the rock symbol looked like a 1.
I think they made it foggy so that the player couldn't see the central recieving station. If the player could see it from other areas, then images would need to be rendered for each of the satellite dishes positions, which would be as maddening as the gate room was to render in Riven. :)
deserts are defined by a lack of precipitation and vegetation. There are four types of deserts: subtropical deserts are hot and dry year-round; coastal deserts have cool winters and warm summers; cold winter deserts have long, dry summers and low rainfall in the winter; polar deserts are cold year-round. Antarctica is an example of a polar desert. there's no shortage of water, but very little falls on the mainland.
Considering that the pages are part of a linking panel and you can't link to two places at once, it seems to make sense that the first page would return to a place related to the world of the book of origin. Got it memorized?
@Mewzard No. He'd be still trapped in K'veer because the stranger wouldn't have been able to talk to Sirrus or Achenar to find out the final combination. :-)
11:58 Reminds me of the Steely Dan song 'FM (No Static At All)'. Surely a lake that's open to the sea ceases to be a 'lake'...it's more in the nature of a cove or perhaps a lagoon, isn't it?
I suppose you could say that the pages are similar to the brothers and thus cant be with each other because the brothers are imprisoned in different ages? Or they hate each other lol
I used to be disturbed by the noise from that wind tunnel, but at around the age of 4, I was sensitive to a lot of dramatic events and loud sounds at the time.
Omg....that's 1 minute (or less) of my life wasted to a very horrible comment, would leave the hate out of any more videos chap... Dilandau says alot of words but is very entertaining!
9 minutes? it's 13 minutes. And if you don't want to waste your life watching a video on something you looked up maybe you shouldn't waste more time typing a useless petty comment.
I don't think you actually need to move all the dishes to the right places. Just keep track of which dish you have pointed where, and that should give you the order you Need.
Atrus should have just put a retina scanner, or something to recognize his finger prints. Would have saved a lot of trouble, and risked less security wise.
Omg....that's 9 min of my life wasted to a very horrible British narrator....would leave the talking out of any more videos chap... Pictures say 1000 words I'm sure we'll live with silence

I guess it's also part of their culture, turning your surroundings into feats of engineering and cognitive mazes.

Nah just render distance issues

That tunnel passage reminds me of Greenwich Tunnel!

Oh and I also loved the King's Quest games so I'm looking forward to watching your LP's of those too.
@Mewzard No. He'd be still trapped in K'veer because the stranger wouldn't have been able to talk to Sirrus or Achenar to find out the final combination. :-)
if the stranger was deaf, how could they complete this puzzle?
Uh. They'd likely have trouble even getting to this age. o.o;

Just got back from my workout.

CZcams cut off my comment... Anyway, thanks so much for the (as always) brilliant LP, Sven!!
@WeaselKing1000
technically it becomes classed as a bay, though the great lakes all have a connection to the ocean through the St.Laurence river.
I'm not even British...
Why did Atrus set up such an elaborate puzzle to open the door? :)

by desert maybe he means lifeless?

My Friend ***** has tried making the point that the entire game of myst could be recreated in Powerpoint, anyone want to help me prove him wrong.
Yes 9 min only cause I was waiting to see if there was really any useful information from the video but there wasn't
