- This is a crazy time we are in. We are living in a time that maybe your future is not clear and you may be thinking about getting into a Trade. So I decided to create a video about " Advice to a New Electrical Apprentice or someone who is thinking about making a change in their life. A Trade is a great thing to have and if you put enough time in you will see a great change in your life. This will become a video series to help people who are on the fence of joining a trade.
I will give an inside look on my Apprenticeship and also interview others to give a greater understanding on what is out there. Now is the time to get informed and see if a Trade is what you are looking for or maybe even need!!
If you would like to share your experience with me please email me at sparkyinstructor@gmail.com
3 years on the trade, always keeping my mouth shut, respecting my superiors and willing to learn💪
I started in the field in 1991 with no experience, I just needed a job! I remember they told me to show up Monday morning and I was going to be pulling cable. I had no idea what that meant and was nervous to get started. That feeling never changed for me at every step. I went from apprentice to journeyman to lead man to foreman to GF to Field engineer to superintendent. I remember asking questions to more experienced people and some of them would get mad at me for asking a stupid questions and not answer it. I ended up figuring out that those people that got mad at me really did not know the answer and was just covering it up with being mad at me. I agree with your point on just show up, shut your mouth, have a good attitude and you will go far in this trade. I have seen a lot of Mr. Cools be the first ones to get laid off and not move on to the next job.
I have only watched a couple of videos but I really like them and will watch more.
Thanks!!!!
Thats a good comment. What do you mean by Mr. Cools? Like, cocky, knowitall, a loudmouth, what? I want to know what you mean so I can have an idea of how not to behave out there. Thank you
@@elc2k385 I mean to cool to work and learn and get the job done.
So so true!! some react with anger because they too are figuring it out as they go. Lol
I doubted my choice 1 month in.. I am now at 4 months. My teachers are the best and strongly encourage me. I'm very blessed.
I started in 98. I needed a job, and my friends dad was an electrical contractor. He hired me and sent me off with my friend (his son) and the learning began. I started off doing plugs and switches. Now, all these years later, I work for my friend, he left his dad and started his own company. in december 2021, me and my wife plan to start our own company. This trade saved my live I believe. I took almost 20 years off from the trade. I got back into it last summer, took my Jman test and here I am.
Here's my comment about bending pipe. I was impatient but willing to learn. I simply kept my mouth shut and told myself "you WILL eventually."
Now six years into in this trade, I'm one of the few people who can still say "I love my job!" Never give up 💯
Hello Mr. Michaud new subscriber here 🙃 I'm a woman that just got into the electrical field. You're 100% right, by honoring rule #1 (keep my mouth shut) I earned a raise days after my first month 😊 I'll be on the watch for your videos so I can educate myself as much as I can. Thank you 😁
Thank you brother, your info really helped me
Thanks for your advice, Craig!
This is life...... Any trade, anything in life.... Great video!
thank you for this video, is basically about all the life, always keep humble. you got a new subscriber
Thank you very much for your advice we love you. We’re the best instructor 🤝🤝I’m jeremie from Kansas City
Hola, desde Puerto Rico. I’m currently a student of electrical trade. I like your videos a lot👌🏼👌🏼
Finish my classes next week & currently applying for apprenticeship or even a helper position just to get my foot in the door to get some field experience. Show up, study the code, study the trade at home off the clock & hopefully I will stand out from the slackers.
great advice, Thank you
Wow. What an insight to your apprenticeship. In my 11th month of my apprenticeship I still had to get tools for my colluage and he hardly taught me anything. And every time I ask a question he gets frustrated.
Hey Craig..really like your videos. I'm trying to get into the electrical field now. Have lots of schooling and experience but non-related to the electrician field. I have been applying but no luck so far. I'm very teachable and a hard worker, just need someone to take a chance on me. Would you continue making these videos they are excellent learning source. Thank you for what you do.
I went in the trade 4 years ago and had a couple damn good drill sergeant foreman's.
1st year (Industrial/commercial) - Forklift our pallets of material, gather material, underground work, assist journeymen, clean, organize material, etc...
Now I hook up panels, transformers, inlight censors systems, and currently a lead of 2 Journeymen, and 3 new apprentices on the 2nd floor of a retirement center, overlooking their rough in, and wire make up/trim😀
Your 4 years in , still an apprentice, running 2 journeyman and some other apprentices? Your running work, and hooking up that equipment?
I'm stunned that your foreman running full journeyman still while being an apprentice.
Maybe I have the info wrong that you wrote
@@Josh-vp1hw no, you read that right. There's a few electricians in my family, plus worked with electricians at my last job before I got in the trade. And to answer your questions about the so called "Journeymen"....that eventually got fired, claiming they had 10+ years...yet never labeled their shit, messed up on color codes, their troubleshooting was a joke. So yeah, I proved myself.
That's also good advice first year never think you are above picking up a broom or organizing materials. That applies always really
Good job
I just want to thank you for making the videos you make voltages drop and sizing wires and the math formula. You make it easy to understand. I have just passed my electrical certification exam. Thank you thank you.
Congratulations!! So glad I was able to help!! CM
Yes you make electrical easy to the point. No loops and hoops. Thank you for making all your videos on electrical. I did exactly what you said for the exam. And I passed.
You have to be able to demonstrate that you can do the little things and follow instructions before you can do the big things. Crawling before walking.
I just subbed!!!!!
My first day was me plugging in wires into boxes for can lights and doing rough ins. I walk into the site and my boss goes “fuck we’re behind you’re gonna have to learn this shit right now!” The first can I messed up and he goes “ I’m only gonna show this one more time and if you can’t get it next try then I don’t know if this trade is for you you’re better off at your last job” as scared as I was I’m grateful for how much of a dick he was and is because I wouldn’t have picked it up so quick.
Hi Craig. Thank you for all helpful videos you made! I have a requirement it's always coming in mine mind. It might be never heard it from any Apprentice, Electrician. My requirement is... When we have a new construction dwelling unit or any of new construction . What we expertly start with when we do Electrical work/wiring? I would like it to list it as steps. Like do we need first to find out the dwelling square foot then as the home owner about what he/she will have of appliances in that dwelling unit including water heater Electrical/gas, furnace electrical/gas, kitchen appliances such as wall oven Electrical/gas cooking tops/oven Electrical/gas etc? I really need to know what we should do so we can do as steps to find out who we size feeders, how many amps we need, what amperage meter we need, etc... Please help me with that information or make a video to explain that as I will be a Journeyman Electrician 01 soon. THANK YOU FOR HELP!!!!
only underground first 2 months with my journyman-forman digging exposeing and excavateing also run underground conduit
The times aren't that uncertain for us sparkies. We're considered "essential' workers. Btw, doing a job down your way, in New London. Thank God for the sea breeze🥵
Long time no see! Hope you're well. Hit my three years this month, not long until I take my journeyman test. My advice for new apprentice: know how to use a shovel and avoid huffing PVC glue. Show up early and show up daily. Give a damn. Consistency and knowledge retention will be rewarded in time.
Wow that’s great!! No it won’t be long before you take the test!! I have been working on my code and calculation videos so I am sure they will help. Life hit us all pretty hard in different ways. I will be regularly posting going into next month!! If you need anything please reach out!! CM
@@craigmichaud-electricalins4602 will do! Sounds great, I'll definitely reach out when I'm ready for a refresher course, do you still offer that service??
Hoping I get accepted into the union. Its been a week since my interview and I am feeling good about deciding this path for my life.
I love this how can I more information about the Trade skills with you on line.
Depends on the company and who you have to work with. I would rather not comment on my experiences because I didn't make it and had bad experiences.
💯
We really love you and we supporting you one understand (% you will make it in Jesus name. Because you cured a lot about us God bless you you will in Jesus Christ name 🤝🙏
I am comming to electrical trade from engineering with 20 years experience what should I expect. I am getting my license soon. Thanks I am tired of engineering I have worked as field service engineer all my life but I feel like trades are more realistic day to day work. Thanks for sharing your knowledge sir
my issue is, i dont know where to branch off, since there is so many sub-categories
should i just scrap all the experience i can get from a little bit of everything? since ive never been out on the field.
when i was schooling i loved motor control, and it still interests me, even took plc classes.
Just dont know where to start....
Hello. I wa5ch your videos sometimes. I am trynna build my own house and I need the specifications for a temporary electrical power pole, please. Where can I find it? I mean the details of all the stuffs needed to install it...
I know somebody..ME Thankyou Mr.C
Hey sir how much should I charge by install an outlet and a light fixture. I work in a company make 4 an hour .I have small projects like wiring a small house just saying. But I have no clue how much I should charge by outlet and light fixture.
Hi I would like to prepare myself to take the test, I've tried to find any school where I can get more knowledge but my work doesn't allow to attend, do you give some classes or courses?
What if you get a journeyman that isn’t a strong teacher? I’ve only worked a couple days so far once a week. Looking to get more hours when my wife changes her schedule
Where has this guy been?
Where you live are you giving any practice classes thanks
I'm doing trade school right now, any advice on how to conduct myself in interviews, after I graduate. In other words I don't want to come off as a cocky know-it-all young guy.
My advice is simple!! dont show your knowledge all at once!! You will miss some great opportunities along the way to pop out with a home run!! Always look on ways to improve and be teachable!! Good luck sir!! CM
Hi. If I have licence from Puerto Rico it"s accepted there.
I have an apprentice right now that has 4 years on paper, but knows about 6 months worth. It is tough.
There's two types of journeyman, those who have the patience to teach and those who don't. Word of advice, if your apprentice sticks around for the duration of there apprenticeship then you are a teacher. If not then you better change yourself.
Always great content Sir. I always suggest your ch in fb groups or to others on Instagram.
Thank you very much!! Working on more new content coming soon!! Subscribers like you keep me going! Thanks CM
I’m nervous about tomorrow. It’s my first day as a residential electrician apprentice. I’m not necessarily handy and I’ve been working warehouse jobs most of my life. Im 30. Hard worker and strong. You think I’ll be okay?
You will be fine!! Keep your mouth shut and pay attention!! Be sure to ask if you don’t know how to do something!! Always stay busy!! It will be fine!! CM
@@craigmichaud-electricalins4602 so I had my first day. I did a lot of observing, and being on alert. Helped build scaffolding, fetched some things, dug a hole, touched some wires. Had some embarrassing moments because I’m so green lol, but I made it!
Hi Craig,
You're in Canada or US?...
I'm taking the program in a college for apprentice...
I live in the USA!!
Thanks for answer me.
I really appreciate your job. Just keep doing that, you're helping a lot of people.
I use your chanel to study and improve my electrical skills.
May God bless you.
Thanks
Any advise for a 14 year old 🙃
Work for an uncle or someone in construction in your family
Yes. Read as much as you can. Take the time now to learn how electricity behaves, the names of the tools and how they're used, and the different materials used on the job site.
Well if ur not going to answer my emails after saying to EMAIL You, then I’m unsubscribing.
Sorry I have not gotten back to you. I only get to respond to one or two a day. This is a very busy time trying to teach classes and produce videos!! But I guess you have to do what you have to do!! CM
@@craigmichaud-electricalins4602 You will hear me or I'm leaving that will teach you!!! Bye Bye
