    The reason this game has such a focus on Prose is that it was originally going to be a book series, but when the first book flopped in terms of sales (barely 1000 copies sold IIRC), the series was cancelled only to be revived here as a game. The same team did the book and the game. The book is set 20 years after Disco Elysium and there are a good many historical figures mentioned in this game whose backstories are explained in the book.
    The book is called “A Sacred And Terrible Air.” Fans of Disco Elysium have done an English translation of the book you can find online for free if you want to check it out.

    One thing you'll notice playing it is that failing a red check isn't really actually a "fail," it just makes a dialogue or scene play out differently, and often times the "failure" can have a much better or funnier result, so don't worry too much about whether you pass or fail things as you play.
    Also, if you like Inland Empire and are investing a lot in it, you really should go get that tie.

    at the beginning I was not so sure about selecting pre-created archetype, since 2 out of 3 of them are having 1 intellect.
    but after the first stream I reconsidered it, and came up with the conclusion what it's perfectly incapsulates Brady: thinking that he can deduce, seduce and rationalize anyone, show himself only using his strong parts, but fail read the room and even find this situation where his skills will be useful. C'est la vie.

    • @eurobrady
      @eurobrady  Před 4 měsíci +46

      It really is the perfect archetype for me

    • @varsoonhks3211
      @varsoonhks3211 Před 4 měsíci +13

      The starting Archetypes are all pretty solid as they put two stats at 4 while dropping one of the other two stats entirely.
      As a bit of a peek behind the scene, at 4 in a skill, you start to hear from that skill much more often.
      This is largely due to passive checks coming across at 2 point increments. So, really, you want your skills on even numbers as often as possible to clear more passive check hurdles, triggering more options for dialogue, etc.
      One of the blandest playthroughs would be one where you spread yourself very thin across all four stats in character creation. You wouldn't really excel at anything or get nearly as much dialogue but you also wouldn't fail as much in your weak points either, so the sense of character might have a harder time emerging.
      The Archetype that Euro went with is also going to be pretty nice because having 4 Vitality and Volition means having nice chunky health pools.

    • @MrMoptop47
      @MrMoptop47 Před 4 měsíci +16

      @varsoonhks3211 I disagree that spreading your skills thin is a "bad" way to play. Mostly because that's how I always play DE. Now obviously there are some invisible checks you won't pass without high skills or by knowing what to do ahead of time (Kim's high-low five for instance)
      But that is the entire point of the archetypes/custom character. 3 across all the stats should be its own archetype and as someone who has chosen it several times I would recommend calling it Coward.😂😂
      There's also the possibility that Harry was the kind of person to be afraid of committing himself too much to anything. And if you've played the game I think you can see why it's a viable lore explainable build.

  • @colt1903
    @colt1903 Před 4 měsíci +51

    This is arguably the best game for a therapist to play, because there's just SO... MUCH... SHIT. The main character is a type of character I've never seen before. Not because he necessarily cover some sort of revolutionary new ground, but again, there's so much packed into the character that it almost feels like TOO MUCH, sometimes.
    I mean, his thoughts are literally categorized into these different stats, each with their own personality, and every single one has unique dialogue that can happen in what feels like just about every single interaction, IF you manage to roll correctly.
    And that's the kicker. The invisible rolls happening in the background that you don't even see or have any real control over aside from what stats you put your points into.
    It is INSANE how many different bits and pieces of this characters personality only truly shines through after multiple playthroughs.
    I can think of like... 3 interations off the top of my head tuat I had NEVER seen before until after like... 5 playthoughs. PURELY because my luck when it comes to anything Empathy roll related is just that abysmal. Word of warning, when Empathy checks FAIL... Hoo boy.😂

    • @TheHippyProductions
      @TheHippyProductions Před 4 měsíci +4

      Evrarte alone has an hour and a half of potential dialogue in this game. Absolute insanity. I hope all the VAs were paid very very well. It'd be one thing to be paid by volume but the QUALITY expected from these folks in addition to having to know which pieces of the web map theyre on to know how to deliver their lines appropriately is just ludicrous.

  • @BlazeMakesGames
    @BlazeMakesGames Před 4 měsíci +13

    One thing to take note of that I'm not sure if you noticed, is that if a dialog option has quotes around it, it means you're saying it out load, but if it doesn't, then it's just a thought in your head, in which case you can usually safely pursue that thought to further analyze your current situation without necessarily progressing the conversation just yet.

    I understand why its in the game, but I really do think that creating your own character instead of just using one of the presets is VERY important for establishing how the game actually works and what each skillset is actually used for, it is much, *much* more complex and in-depth than most people will assume and its really important that you read through and fully understand every single one of your skills before commiting to a build. For example, the type of build I think you originally wanted to play would have been one that invested in Intellect and Psyche for Drama, Empathy, and Suggestion, as well as a bit of Rhetoric and Conceptualization. Unfortunately, picking a preset not only means you lost the opprotunity to read your skills before committing to a build, it also means the game didn't tell you about skill caps, which with only a handful of exceptions are hard-set from the very beginning to the very end, which means that point you put into Rhetoric was a massive waste and completely useless, a mistake that wouldn't have happened if the game just had a slightly better onboarding process that actually explained these very important things.

      @Bone8380 If you find customization is ideal over choosing a preset, that's fine. I just don't think it's fair to say that choosing a preset and investing a point into a skill that doesn't fit within it is a "massive waste" or an irreparable "mistake" on someone else's part. It's not really that important. You just miss out on some checks or internal dialogue, which is bound to happen anyway in this sort of game. It's not like it sullies the whole experience or you're barred from solving the mystery. But that's just my take-- not trying to start a full-on arguement or anything. I just wanna be a troll and say this game is a better therapist than most, I don't want to spoil the ending but this game has such an open ended narrative and story even though it's mostly linear the narrative is vastly different based on your actions, I've fallen in love with games like this, (Shadow of Memories ((nobody will know this one but my late mother loved this one)), Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect, Cyberpunk 2077 and now Disco Elysium and Balders Gate 3.) Back to my point, games like this and this game especially have a way of showing you a closer simulation to reality in that actions have consequences, and honestly games didn't really do that in any MEANINGFUL way besides don't suck/misunderstand or you die/lose, but when it comes to moraly weighted narratives and oft times ambiguous outcomes it's a really nice way to reflect and I honestly think these types of games are better for your brain, on top of that back to Disco Elysium, the game has its very own unique way of really utilizing this function in such a way I think no other game has, just let me know when youre done, if you feel like the same person as when you started. For me, this game gave me such a moment of reflection, I was able to if only for a moment, reflect on actions I was taking in my own life far before my own retrospect normally kicks in. @@user-ih5jr8rt5q I can see how with certain playthroughs one could come to think that this game is nihilistic and hopeless. That being said, I believe that Disco Elysium is actually anti-nihilist, and quite optimistic about humanity and its ability to overcome feelings of meaninglessness and move past loss.
      Disco argues that making human connections and being present in the current moment is the only thing that will keep us, and our world, existing. That while Harry and Kim aren't currently powerful enough to change the larger systems making everyone suffer, they can bring small moments of hope and support to those who they interact with, their moments of joy being like stars that stubbornly refuse to go out in a sea of darkness.
      And speaking of political commentary, Disco's political thesis seems to be that even if revolutions fail, eventually through community-minded political movements we can fight against hopelessness. There is a whole discussion at the Book Club meeting in the tennament attic about Revecholian Masovian's working to disperse the physical manifestation of nihilism and entropy in the world of Elysium, “The Pale”. Now, one can definitely argue whether this assertion from Disco is the truth (and goodness knows that philosophers and political scientists have been doing so for centuries), but it can't be said that Disco just shallowly states this and does not try to back it up; The game is full of symbolism and examples of pushing through hopelessness to achieve something that is thought of as impossible or overly idealistic (like a certain big creature we can come to find). While these examples are all fictional, the game is trying to create allegories to illustrate an abstract point, just like Plato creating the Allegory of the Cave.

    Oh man this will be interesting. Disco elysium is one of those games that makes you conceptualize the everyday struggles that many people deal with. But makes those struggles more apparent by placing you into Harry's shoes, or one shoe rather. This game is spectacular, it helped me out making mundane, difficult decisions and even helped me understand what I needed to improve upon.

    Love this game, and love seeing people react to it. This will be an interesting playthrough! Also, an interesting point about the addiction in this game: there's no actual drawbacks to indulging. I think it's because the game takes place over too short a time period. HOWEVER, the game does make you really feel like an addict if you go that route, because the drugs and alcohol gives you stat boosts. If you use them, you'll find yourself smoking a cigarette and downing a beer before every conversation and confrontation just so you're "at the top of your game"... I thought it was really interesting how they tied that in without just hitting you for -1 damage every time you smoke.

    Oh this game is so good. Very, very well written and complex. This may be the closest we ever get to seeing you do therapy on “real people” lmao (assuming you don’t what to play bad cop the whole time ofc)
    Btw, this is one of those games where every single interaction is relevant for understanding the characters, down to the body language being described. But the way the narration interprets them is up to your own (character’s) brain, so definitely be sure you’re paying attention to the skills you’re focusing on/neglecting

    def interested in a playthrough like this. between the game's really unique prose, it's definitively marxist approach to history/politics and its really interesting honesty and realism when it comes to our protagonists' psychology, there is a facinating commitment to a scientific approach to a nonsensical world. it creates such an interesting feeling when playing it and i def wanna see more analysis of the psyhological aspect like this.

      May I make a suggestion? You'll make better progress, when you posess more information on the subject of the skill checks you're taking. You're roleplaying a detective after all, and a lot of checks benefit from rational questioning - like choosing to close one eye when aiming just makes sence (and adds around 12% to succeeding the check. Also, what's cool about the skill system is that these parts of your psyche, as noted, contradict each other and may be plain wrong when overpowered, like a very high Authority will chime in to you *attempt* to dominate more often, but assessing the character you're talking to will help understand what sills to listen too - as attemting to dominate someone with a higher authority or self-confidence would get you to the exact opposite effect. Try talking to Kim and trying to get him to tell a secret about himself for a demonstration. ;) Another thing that's usually fine in other games is the order you ask questions - or not asking some at all, feighning ignorance is beneficial sometimes, when you might just give an interogated suspect info that'd put them in *lockdown mode*.
      So basically - try and do stuff that seems to rationally raise your chances of passing a certain check as if it were in real life - e.g. stop the ceiling fan from spinning before trying to grab your necktie. ;)
      One last thing - the kids are like that, because the game takes place after an event similar to the collapse of the USSR, so there's a lot of disarray, and the street taught the kids to survive. It's a scarily good reflection of my childhood in the 90's Russia, except that I was trying to be a good kid, but had to play the power dynamics game anyway. ;)
      Anyhow, pardon me if the advice is unsolicited.
      And good luck with the rest of the game - you've just scratched the surface and it gets a lot better.
      The first day is exposition that is meant to kind of face the detective with the consequences of his own actions, so on day one he is going to be in shameful situations a lot.
      But that will pass!
      (Adding this after watching the Twitch VOD) :3
      Best of luck!

      @eurobrady  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Thank you for checking it out! Definitely sounds like we have some shared interests! And not to worry, I'm actually going to be doing the major analysis parts as inserts between the full long plays. It's hard to keep up with full let's plays and especially so if you don't catch them from the beginning. I want people to be able join at any point or just get the analytical breakdown so the next upload will be more like a ten minute video ahead of the next stream upload. That way people can still enjoy and follow along even if they cant commit the time to a full playthrough.

    • @looler12123
      @looler12123 Před 4 měsíci

      @@eurobrady oh, interesting. I do like that format. There's another CZcamsr (TBSkyen) who had a series trying to critically analyze the boss designs of Dark Souls *while* fighting them. He shifted from trying to do them while playing to instead hitting some points in the playthroughs, then putting longer-form analysis at the end of the videos. I thought that facilitated both a smoother pace for the "Let's Play" portion while also giving important time for actual analysis.
      I'm almost more excited to see those analysis videos. But I'm most of the way through the video for now and I'm mostly gelling with the gameplay style too.

    For future reference, another game that you might find interesting is Hellblade. It's much shorter than this (7-9 hours), with a clear psychological "profile" for the main character, who has psychosis in a time where the word for that did not yet exist. Though the setting if fictitious and mythological, the creators cooperated closely both with researchers, mental health professionals, and people who live with psychosis to try to accurately represent the experience. They even link to mental health support on the game's website ❤ For me, it was not only a great game in itself, but a lovely example of how mental health issues can and should be portrayed in games, as opposed to the "crazy evil" character tropes in horror/survival games.

    I’ve just began playing this game and it’s so cool to see a therapist play it, as it’s kind of… a game about the mind, or at least the mind of one person in particular. It’s interesting in that I’ve learned some things about my own mind and the way I think from the game, by imagining what I’d look like if the game’s system applied to me. I think my Volition would be pretty low, for instance, since I’ve got ADD and my executive dysfunction isn’t great.

    Earned a sub from me! I enjoyed your takes and explained rationale for different decisions made. Absolutely feel free to take a beat and explain the psychology of what's going on, that's the good stuff.
    A few spoiler-free tips :
    Any dialogue options you pick that don't have quotations around them are internalized dialogue / thoughts.
    White checks can be retried after failure if you either : level up the relevant skill ; get a situational bonus from something else (like finding new evidence, etc).
    Red checks can only be attempted once and have drastically different failure and success scenes but both move the game forward.
    Every 2 ranks in a skill will make that skill pass progressively harder hidden passive checks.
    4 ranks in a skill is the threshold for most skills to start having more dialogue.
    There's no right or wrong skills to rank up in--the game is designed to be finished even if you do fail every skill roll ever.
    Time only passes when in a dialogue scene / interaction scene.
    Have fun!
