  • Water in the driver's side floor of a Land Rover LR3 (left side, LH)? Chances are that you have a problem with the sunroof drain. The drain line from the sunroof runs down the a-pillar and exits through the side of the truck behind the front wheel. This line has a nipple on it that rots away and then leaves the drain tube to run water right down to the driver's side floorboard and soaking your carpet!
Notes on the Repairing the sunroof drain:
    1. The drain line is 12mm OD
    2. Push to Connect Straight Union Fitting, 12 mm OD: amzn.to/2psplrB
    3. New Sun Roof Drain Tubes: amzn.to/2oBILpe
    4. Be VERY CARRFUL when you are cutting the tube! Do not cut or nick any of the wires under the dash.
When you are ordering parts, make sure you get a 12mm OD
straight union. There are lots of options for different diameters.

Thank you so much. 8 years of wet floors and electrical faults. Tons of diatribe from all the LR forums one has to wade through like manure. Knowing much about LR's and how to fix yet this alluded me all this frustrated time. Thank you for this simple, quick, informational, slick and informative video. I am about to be able to affect a logical repair and peel off the duct tape over my sun roof and enjoy the breeze and sun again! So stoked! Don't forget to clean out the air conditioning drains as well!

Thanks man. My wife’s LR4 2015 was doing that and I couldn’t find out we’re the hell it was coining from. In my case the nipple didn’t rot. The barb plastic tube came out of the rubber sleeve that the nipple was attached to. Any way I pushed it back together and I ran a zip tie around it just Incase. Tried it with water and works like it should thanks.

Hi..thanks for his great video you've helped us with our passenger side clogs many times with your advise.
We are having drivers side leak now. This is a great easy solution you've posted thank you.
I wonder if this 12mm OD Connector can be bought at the Home Depot ? Cause the one in the Amazon link is $4.19 plus $11.35 Shipping plus tax.
Its not that I'm a cheap skate but that seems kind of a little ridiculous for that thing. I bought the Land Rover OEM Drain about $45..
So is it really possible that the Nipple slides off of the old drain, and that this new oem one will slide off and on to the old drain ??
That really sounds like a good thing.
Also Is it really 30 minutes for a mechanic to replace the whole drain with out messing up the head liner ?
Maybe after 15 years the tube is brittle ?
Or don't bother...what do you think

  • @ExTrumpet
    @ExTrumpet Před 5 lety +1

Great video. There's an easier/cheaper way! Remove the fender grill (pull out at the bottom and then down from on the top to make sure you don't break the top tabs) and inside trim along the pillar (T30 screw on my 2006 Sport).
Then cut the existing drain tube and stick a weed-eater line down the hose and tie it off outside the grill that you removed (the weed eater line is much easier to fish through the drain hole than a tube...I used a bent metal coat hanger and needle nose pliers to fish it out). Pull the existing drain tube (with the bad nipple) out by the dash and then install a new tube (I used 1/4" ID bought at Lowe's for $3), threading over the tied off weed eater line. It will slide along right in place and through the fender hole.
I then put a hose clamp (zip tie would work well, too) around the drain hose at the grill end to insure it doesn't slip out and dump water back into the floor. Remove the weed eater line and couple the old drain tube to the new tube using a 3/8x1/4 coupler (mine was brass, also got at Lowe's for around $2; they are very tight!).
Install the grill and inside trim and you're done! Took me about 15 mins per side. The nipple was in bad shape on the driver's side, still functional on the passenger side, but no doubt would fail in the future--go ahead and change both! My bill to repair was under $10 (10' 1/4 hose, two 3/8x1/4 brass couplers, and a couple hose clamps). Since there is no nipple to degrade over time, this should last the life of the Rover.

You're welcome! Very common, it seems like it is 100% failure on all LR3's! Please let us know how the 1/2" connector works after a while. I tested one out of the LR3 on a section of the 12mm tube and it leaked a little bit, but in my test I pressurized the tube beyond what one would expect it would see as a drain.

I'm getting ready to do this in the next week. I just confirmed the nipple was toast this morning. To check it, pull off the side vent on RH fender, pull out the rubber thingy, then pull out the foam thingy, behind it you will see the hole for the drain tube exit. My nipple was rotted off. The repair is more involved and risky because of the CJB, the glove box and all the wires.

I've done the method with compressed air. (using an air compressor, blow air through the drain tube from the top) I've heard using edge trimmer line as a drain snake. Be careful with this method, you don't want to poke a hole in the rubber nipple at the drain point. both methods, use water to help flush it.

Because the only place it "breaks up" is the little rubber nipple at the bottom. The rest of the line is hard plastic, including the connection at the sunroof does not fail. If you have a leak up that high, it is because the line is clogged, not because the line has failed.
