This is a master job, Ken. Most hair stylists are neither willing nor able of delivering what the customer asks for. Or they don't care at all, with the mindset "that hair will grow anyways again"

Just needed a soft perm to give volume & he could’ve had what he wanted. My hair is straight & medium thick but has no volume, I’m now 61 & permed my hair myself all through my teenage years & it would end up with the type of volume this guy wants for the type of cut he chose.

Agreed. It was totally possible. would rather the hairstylist just say they don't know how to do this style, instead of talking him out of it, and doing whatever the heck they want.
But instead he had all that hair to work with, and then cut way too much off, and now his client has to grow it out to get closer to what the barber should have done in the first place.
as if a kid can afford regular perms & maintenance. Achievable, yes but financially viable? No.
I was super skepticism at first because the pictures he showed you were terrible. But this cute came out really good. Much better than the pictures or the long hair he had.

He didn't look pleased. Even though he gave a quick smile---emphasis on quick, he looked disappointed.
I think way too much was cut off. So now he'll have to grow it back to get it closer to what he actually wanted.
I also think he was trying to be polite and, maybe, kept in mind that it was done for free.
