    What a great idea lining the coconut liner. I'm going to try this with my hanging baskets as I sometimes have to water twice a day on very hot days in summer. I've only ever used the coconut liners. Your window boxes look really lovely and I'm sure that they bring a lot of pleasure to people walking by. Thanks for the great tip.

      Great! We use plastic in all of our hanging baskets too - it’s saved us a lot of watering. Hope it can for you too.
      Just a few holes in a regular plastic trash bag. Who knew it would solve our problem? 🤓❤️

    The window boxes look beautiful. Also thanks for the plastic in the cocoa liner tip. I also have to water at least every day when it gets hot. Can't wait for spring. It is super windy and 34 degrees here today.

      Hopefully adding a liner can save you some watering this year 🤓. Here’s to warmer weather soon!
      Oh! Someone else mentioned stapling the plastic liner to the coconut liner - should help if you’re filling it up alone. That was a great tip ❤️

    Thank you!!! These are the same and powder coated. I’m very encouraged hearing your experience. The company discouraged me from lining them w plastic as plastic could make them too heavy because drainage would be less?!?! I’m going to do it anyway! My boxes are xl meaning they’re deeper and wider than most. I have a ledge beneath windows of brick and they’ll go beneath. I’ll keep you posted!

    • @perennial-garden
      @perennial-garden  Před 5 měsíci

      Please do keep us posted! 🥰
      And I’d line them anyway - with drainage holes, they won’t be as heavy as the company fears for sure.
      Excited for you 🤩

    Gorgeous plants! Too cold here to start planting out, even though we hardly had any snow this winter. Our zone 5a is fast becoming zone 6a-b.

    Omg! That's what I've been doing for years now. Another tip: don't use white bags because they show up against the dirt... don't ask how I know 😜😂

    • @perennial-garden
      @perennial-garden  Před 5 měsíci +1

      ooooooo. There's a story there! haha - would love to know!
      And this has saved us a lot of headache in the dry summers. Hard to believe we ever have dry weather here... but we do (sometimes).

    • @Lea-zf7lm
      @Lea-zf7lm Před 5 měsíci

      From what I've been told by friends, summer in Denmark is short and fairly cool. Also, it is a rule that men are obliged to wear socks with sandals? 🤔😁
      The soil moved after a torrential rainstorm, and the white plastic bags sticking out against the black dirt made for an interesting look 😂. There's quite nothing like trying to readjust everything in a heavy waterlogged planter (same size as yours) while standing on a step ladder 😂 thank goodness only the top one was affected. I have 3 on a wall. I am vigilant about how I fit the plastic in now...

    • @perennial-garden
      @perennial-garden  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Oh bless! I can only imagine. So glad you could readjust it.
      And yes, it’s a legal requirement to wear socks and sandals here in Denmark 😂 🤣Blame those short, cool summers.

    I just bought my 1st hayrack window box. It has a flat metal black design. My fear is rust happening and staining the house wall. The plastic is great idea. It will be ideal as I live in Florida. Lots of trees but still will dry out very quickly. As well, I expect it inhibits dirt dripping down the side of a home. Hoping to get your take on rust. It appears yours are installed close to the exterior of the wall of your home.

    • @perennial-garden
      @perennial-garden  Před 5 měsíci

      Exciting! I’m sure they’ll look great at your place ❤️
      The plastic does keep the dirt from seeping out and staining the side of the house. We haven’t had an issue with rust - and it rains 260+ days a year here in Denmark 😅. I tried to look ours up… but can’t find them anymore … I think they are steel with a powder coated finish - or maybe iron. Either way, they do touch the house and we have no rust. Hope that helps 🤓
      We also have one on our second floor facing the garden - it’s on wood and also no problems.

    Hi guys!! It's been a while since I've gotten to watch you guys. Missed ya! Been busy with my seedlings. Omg, if you guys saw the amount of seedlings I have, you'd die! Seriously, I don't have a green house, so I use a spare room and my seedlings are out of control. I didn't know I was going to be so successful. Anyway, I love what you guys picked out for your window boxes. As many seedlings that I have, I didn't have pansies, so I purchased some beautiful colors (at my local garden center, lol). It's still much too cold here in PA, today was like 28 degrees! How cold is it over there? You guys are so lucky to have each other and share the passion for gardening. I'm basically on my own. Hubby will build me anything I want, but nope he's not into my seedlings, lol. Do you guys have a facebook page? Not stalking, lol. Take care!

      It has been a while! Hope your week is starting off great.
      How are the seedlings growing? Going to be a good spring? 🥰. Hope so!
      We’re actually in South Georgia this weekend for my niece’s wedding (Allen, here 🤓) - and it’s warm as usual here. Nice with a change of scenery - Altho Denmark was feeling very springy before we left - hope our days of 28 degrees are behind us.
      Lars has a Facebook page. I do, too… but I post nothing 😩. His is: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100082326086669

    So lovely! I wonder how you exactly save the spring bulbs. Do you hide them somewhere (for a long time) till the leaves are gone? And do you then keep the dry bulbs without any soil in a dark place? I'm really curious to know that.

    • @perennial-garden
      @perennial-garden  Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks so much for watching! And asking great questions 🥰
      When the flowers are finished, we'll snip them off and lift the bulbs. We'll keep them in a box wrapped with newspaper in our garden shed. We'll plant them back in the hanging basket this autumn, once the summer flowers are finished.
      Ideally, we'd leave the bulbs and let the flowers die back naturally, so the bulb gets stronger. But, we also want our window boxes to look good this summer... so we'll remove them once these bulbs stop flowering.
      I hope that helps! Let me know if it makes sense :)

    • @AnnaT.54
      @AnnaT.54 Před 4 měsíci

      @@perennial-gardenThis makes sense indeed and thanks for answering so promptly. I'll try the wrapping method this year as I don't like to see so many dying leaves around.

    Are there any limitations on the kind of plastic bag you use? I'm sure not just any plastic will do, right?

    • @perennial-garden
      @perennial-garden  Před 11 dny

      We use any plastic to be honest... the one we use this year is a clear (kind of clear anyway) heavy-duty trash bag that we also use to transport garden clippings to the recycling center. I wouldn't use a scented trash bag (I know they have those in the USA, for example) -- I would worry that that chemical scent could seep out into my plants. Otherwise, we've used black trash bags before, etc (the normal kind we use indoors for our trash). Hope that helps!
