Your ALLY SSD upgrade isn't safe until you cool it

  • If you decide to upgrade your ROG ALLY SSD, especially to one with high speeds, you need to make sure it has enough cooling otherwise heat will shorten its life and even cause nearby components to overheat
    for a cheap price, you can fix this issue by adding a copper heatsink that would highly severe your ALLY in the long run

    So i noticed you butchered your Ally back cover. How will we be so sure we will get the same result as you are with a non modified back cover?

    • @TECHOSAUR
      @TECHOSAUR  Před 8 měsíci +1

      With a best case scenario my SSD thermal throttled, the original back cover won't be any better and surely it would help.
      the slim heatsink is good but mostly if you put it on the stock SSD or one with read speed of 4750mb/s like the Sabrent Rocket one, it's good Enough
      Instead faster ones like the SN770m gets over 5300mb/s and generates more heat
      Therefore it need denser heatsink, it will greatly do positive impact under any scenario
      When I first got it and had that slim heatsink, I felt higher temps, even holding it felt different

  • @mykeb1557
    @mykeb1557 Před 2 měsíci +1

    Sabrent Rocket 2tb, temps are great stock. I personally only use custom TDP, 22w(23-25boost), fans @100% 90c & cpu boost OFF 99% of time, unless trying to obtain better low % fps. Nosey Debloat tool will help a ton too. But you’ll see a HUGE difference in temps turning overclock settings down, cpu boost etc. I may argue a Ally with heat sink could break motherboard/screen if dropped right too. If you got a SSD overheating, I would use a thermal pad, they come with enclosures.

    It is not only the heat problem it is also the Thermal throtteling that introduces stutter in the framerate. I tried my Micron 1TB and I got 75 C in comparison to 62 with the original one. Thermal throtteling starts with 70 with these models

    Does faster ssd matter when it comes to game performance aside from faster loading? it's not ram and ram is being read on the fly and ssd is just read when the game loads oh btw there's a feature with newer games called streaming texture streaming audio streaming from the ssd oh so i think it does impact performance so a faster ssd makes more sense

    the point is not that it needs to be super cooled even if coper did make a big diffrence its alot more pricy and harder to do so its not worth it at all to do cuz you gain nothing at all but mabey a few c in temp

    • @TECHOSAUR
      @TECHOSAUR  Před 8 měsíci +2

      it costs 5$ from AliExpress and it dropped temp by over 20 in this benchmark and 10 in gaming
      This SSD is so much faster than the stock one, that's why for example it needs cooling
      Gen 4 SSD runs hot and Gen 5 even more
      of course if you think it's not worth it for you that's ok, but if you pay 200€
      I think it's a good idea to cool it

      😂😂😂 you really do not know what you are talking about. A couple of guys have put a heat sink on the m.2 drive and it cooled significantly. I still have to do it on mine but I'm still playing around with it. Please know what you are talking about before you comment.

    Nice job! Maybe a peltier cooler between the ssd and the copper heatsink will bring a litte more cooling and more nicer temperatures. You should have a look on it ;)

    Does thermal pad thickness make a difference? Like if I pair the 1.5 mm one with the big heatsink, will it be better than if I use the 1mm with the big heatsink?

    • @TECHOSAUR
      @TECHOSAUR  Před 4 měsíci +1

      No, you will also risk the cover not closing, 1mm is the limit to he able to close the back cover without so much force with the big heatsink I tried here

    Obviously heat kills.

    • @TECHOSAUR
      @TECHOSAUR  Před 7 měsíci

      this SSD runs really hot given its high read/write speed, for longevity its good to apply some heat sink on top of it, also it helped reduce the surrounding components temps by a small margin like APU

  • @xKillZone99
    @xKillZone99 Před 6 měsíci +1

    you really dont need to use a heat sink unless youre using a high end 2280 that hits 7000mbps

    • @TECHOSAUR
      @TECHOSAUR  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Even if it's 2230 but given it's placed in a tight chassis with limited airflow at over 5150mbps I found it to quite benefit from installing a heatsink , especially for making sure it can consistently hit it's rated speeds

  • @shilu6979
    @shilu6979 Před 8 měsíci +1

    Good job dude!
    A few words ;p
    When the backplate is by default, the air entrance is between the ssd and the left vent, which would in theory create a flow to move the hot around the ssd towards the fan. BUT, given that by default the ssd has no heatsink, I don't think much hot aire would move... What you are achieving is passively cooling the ssd with a heatsink, while opening a hole right over the fan. So there are 2 benefits: 1 is lower temps on the ssd and 2nd is lower temp on the apu, as it is not being cooled by sucking hot air coming from the ssd. The diference iits not night and day, but hey, 2-3 degrees by a 5$ heatsink worth it imo.
    Keep on the good content!

      no need to the ssd does not need that much cooling and the fans push plenty of air about it to work just fine you dont need more fans your over reacting

      I'd even go further step and add a small fan to the heatsink and cut a square hole to the backplate I'd power the mini fan by usb

      but I also tested it with 30-minute gameplay 3:20
      this SSD runs hot compared to the stock one due to faster speeds, a heatsink would greatly lower its temps and increase its life span, even the slim copper one helped mine quite well but the chunky one is surely more effective
