In my journey to manage reflux, heartburn, and GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease), I've learned that dietary triggers play a significant role in this condition. While managing symptoms is essential for immediate relief, it shouldn't be the sole focus. The ultimate goal is to reduce or eliminate trigger foods while working on the underlying issues causing reflux and heartburn in a two pronged approach to manage this condition.
To help you on this journey, let's categorise some common trigger foods:
Category 1: Acidic or Spicy Foods
These include cayenne pepper, tomatoes and their products, grapefruit, orange juice, and coffee. These foods are acidic and can trigger reflux. If you identify with this category, it may indicate potential issues with your stomach acid.
    Category 2: Fatty Foods
High-fat meals can trigger heartburn and reflux by affecting sphincter tone and delaying gastric emptying. This leads to reflux symptoms.
    Category 3: Carbonated Liquids
Over 50% of reflux patients may experience worsened symptoms when consuming carbonated beverages. They lower oesophageal pressure and increase transient relaxations, promoting reflux.
    Category 4: Histamine Foods
Histamine-rich foods like tea, coffee, chocolate, citrus fruits, tomatoes, processed meats, and alcohol can overlap with other triggers. If you react to histamine-rich foods, consider a low histamine diet.
To manage these triggers effectively, start by eliminating one category at a time and observe how your symptoms improve. This systematic approach can help you identify the specific foods or triggers responsible for your reflux symptoms. While managing symptoms is essential, remember that the ultimate goal is to address the root causes of your reflux. Successfully resolving these underlying issues can lead to improved tolerance of foods that were previously problematic.

Excellent video as always. Chocolate and Coffee are my kryptonite. Chocolate is worse. Ginger and peppermint deserved a special mention also.
