    I’m ‘bonsai curious’ I will admit, but I’m mostly just fascinated by Nigel’s enthusiasm. 😁 I am also a biologist and a gardener, so I’m close to the topic anyways. So I ‘bonsaied’ some of my house plants and generally introduced bonsai principles to how I treat all my plants from cedar hedges to African violets. This all makes sense to me from a technical/biological view AND I totally relate to the humanity.
    The jokes I make about the zombie apocalypse when hearing a siren have increased exponentially! 😎

    In my collection I have 3 Tridents and a Trident cutting that has taken off like mad last summer!!
    The cutting was actually, the top off of one of the other three. When I cut it, the trunk at that cut point was 1/2" thick, and it had dozens of small branches that I cut way back, then scraped the bark on the bottom at the cut, dipped in rooting hormone, and it took off almost immediately. Its only 3" tall, has dozens and dozens of leaves right now, and is a gorgeous little Trident.
    It was just an attempt when I topped the bigger Trident to create taper, and decided to try and root it. It worked.. such a great surprise.
    Two of the three are about 12 years, one is about 8 years, and the cutting was rooted last summer. Absolutely gorgeous year round. Especially fall.

    I live in growing zones 4-6 our winter low has been to -21°F our summer high was 121°F with 78% humidity. I offer my tree's zero protection and coming into spring now where I'm at my tree's are coming back to life and pushing buds the coniferous tree's are losing the frost blush they held all winter and bursting with greens and blue hues. I have an understanding of how the ice insulates the roots naturally and I tested the theory on doings so with my tree's being in pots. But to say the least it was a great success and am pleased with how the snow and ice nature provided added character to what I'm working with.

    I am going to have to remember to only cut part of the tap root when I work on my chestnut seedling this year. 2/3 now leave 1/3 for next time. Not a maple so I will have to look up the specifics for the tree. Thanks Nigel.

    Oh man, when I saw you carrying bags out of the little greenhouse I got so excited for you. Tomorrow or Wednesday for me. I bought a new pot for one of my maple. But Saturday morning the dog was chasing the cats around the house and knocked it down and broke it.😓 $50 down the drain. But after a glue job I at least can use it for tropical. I definitely know which side is the back now.

    Also, thoughts on soil composition? I've always had real luck with tropics in the south with a good quality soil, whereas up north I would have needed a more proper bonsai mix for just about anything. Granted I also was a kid up north.

    I don't understand how you can tell a tree is still alive with no active growth, or buds without cutting it some. Honestly, I've probably thrown a few perfectly alive but didn't look alive trees away so far... how sad...

    • @juniperus.itoigawa
      @juniperus.itoigawa Před 2 lety

      You can tell by scraching of a tiny bit of bark. If its green underneath the part of the tree is still alive.

    • @-ChrisD
      @-ChrisD Před 2 lety +1

      You can barely scratch it with your fingernail and something else and if you see green(the cambium), it should still be alive.
