I cruised on The Oriana in the mid 1970's with my parents and younger brother, from Southampton, and the brass band sail away, we visited Spain, Madeira, Morocco, The Azores, Lanzarote and finally Lisbon, before cruising back to Blighty. My recollections were the swells traversing the bay of Biscay, the indian food selection, served with luncheon every day(many of the kitchen brigade were from Goa) my introduction to a favourite cuisine of mine ever since, the home made after dinner chocolates, the disco/nightclub playing all of the Saturday Night fever style 12 inches, the swimming pools having their own waves when the ship was going through rougher waters and one of the very first Space Invader machines. Fantastic family holiday.

Thanks for commenting. There are many people who criticise cruising but they are usually the ones that I’ve never been on one. We know better. 😉

My cruise on the origional Oriana, was the cruise prior to the LAST ever Oriana cruise undertaken in 1986.
I consider my cruise on the "great white lady of the sea", as my ultimate holiday. I fell in love with her & never wanted to leave her! That was the depth of the emotion she evoked in those who had cruised on her ❤❤❤
She was bought by the Japanese as a stationary function ship.
Then sold to the Chinese. She was bably damaged in a storm & then SCRAPPED!
When I found out about "her" ultimate fate, it hit me hard! What an innoble end for such a great lady 😢😢😢

I think cruise ships are so much more than steel floating objects. Myself and my family travelled on the newer Oriana from 1995 onwards and we had 11 wonderful holidays onboard. My kids were always kept busy at the kid’s club and we have very fond memories of those times at sea. Thank you so much for your comments and have a great day.

As a former bellboy on the chusan at 16 I'm not surprised we didn't get a mention.. Operating the lifts and Telegram deliveries,.. Ist class of course if you were blonde and blue eyed and of course British, lovely uniform superb generous passengers, especially the pickled ones, my weekly wages???.. £7pw..all in, tips in excess of £75 per fortnight, not bad for a 2 week cruise, I'm extremely proud to have had the privilege.. Gregory Virgo from Brighton..

Hi Gregory, thanks for your message. I think most people are grateful for the service that they get on a cruise ship but there are always some people that are never happy. I’m glad you had a good experience. Regards.

Sadly they don’t make them like this anymore. P&O cruises really was something then. Carnival absolutely ruined it when they came in.

I agree with you. Unfortunately, P&O Cruises has now become a 'mainstream' cruise line catering for the masses, previously it was an 'elite' line for discerning passengers. Thanks very much for your comments.

Oriana (1995) wasn’t the best of ships, she had a tendency to pitch in moderate seas and had problems with severe vibration, particularly noticeable in the aft dining room. Not my favourite.

The United Kingdom has lost its soul and pride we don't fabricate much and all our flagship companies have been bought out .This carnival company is an example.
    Sad .
