Does anger ever produce good, beauty, happiness or peace? Anger brings division, tremendous unhappiness. My expression of anger does not give me what I want. It does not make me happy. All it does it damage relationships and make things worse.
Lord Buddha said, "Anger is like drinking poison but expecting the other person to die."
A lot of our behavior is counterproductive to what we really desire, what we seek. Because we are eternal spiritual beings, we desire spiritual love and happiness. According to ancient wisdom, another person in this world cannot make me truly happy in the long run. Yet, we always try to blame others for our anger. Anger is a condition of my own heart, of my consciousness. When anger resides there, all someone else has to do is touch that, and it erupts. When we notice that anger is rising up, then we need to hit the pause button and not act on it. In anger we will do and say things that we will regret.
Why is anger in ancient wisdom said to be a gateway to hell? Although we may think that it is justified to be angry with someone who hurt us or our loved ones, still anger does no good to us as spiritual beings just temporarily struggling for existence in this material world. The more we experience anger, either as a perpetrator or victim of anger, the more hellish our life becomes. Just one moment of rage can create havoc, irreparable harm and cause you to do or say something you will regret the rest of your whole life. The prisons in this world are a testament to this reality.
