hey! sumikko gurashi translates to “life in the corner” lol so it’s funny you noticed they were shy and even said the word corner!! they’re all different adorable but quirky animals (like a polar bear named Shirokuma that’s afraid of the cold) and foods (like tapioca balls and a leftover piece of tonkatsu) and even a little plant (a happy weed) hah.. only in japan I guess!

Next year you should start a trend called "Stationary September" where you make an art work using things like sticky notes, highlighters, stickers, etc. All the things you'd consider to be more of school supplies. It also works perfect because (at least for me) that's around the time everyone's going back to school

Ohhh you should do the kids and parents challenge. Like when you draw parent characters and mix their genes to draw their kid. Or the opposite. Like drawing a kid and making their parents out if then.

I love watching the creative process in these. Being an editor, I often recommend people practicing little scenes based on places or characters or ideas and it’s interesting to watch how it’s so similar but different for artists.
And now that I’m doing art, working on figure drawings at the mo since my digital realism is on pause, it’s fun to see if I can ever notice things, from shading to layout to motion lines, to keep in mind for what I’m trying to learn. Really cool.
I also recently got a kneaded eraser so I tend to repair him, blend in the pigment, while I watch her videos. It makes me feel cool and like an artist now that I’m getting proper supplies.
Yet. At the same time, I’m sculpting him into a sea turtle and his name is Ezra. Sooooo. Still have a ways to go. 😜

Just sou know, when i stopped comparingy art to others is when i started to see real improvement 😐
If it makes you feel better, there’s so many kinds of art and art styles. I suck at illustrations and anything in the realm of her style. But by focusing mainly on toned and soft transitions, I’m not horrible at digital realism (the digitalness helps me get over the anxiety of messing up something I spent five hours on in a way that I can’t fix!). And semi-realistic figure drawings and fashion illustration, they’re all really different and can be great entry points. I sincerely suck at doing a comic booky style, and doubt I’ll ever be very good at it, but just because I’m not good at it doesn’t mean I’m a lost cause. And there’s always abstract painting, which is pretty freeing. An eye for color and balance is ideal there and there’s no need to draw lines or circles or anything.
If you really want to try to draw, if it’s something that’s inside you and you want to be able to express yourself through it, you might just... think about privately trying some stuff. If it sucks, no one has to know, nothing lost. But maybe one style will be easier than the rest, and maybe that can become your entry point. Once you get okay at that, you can branch out.
I’m in no way saying I’m as good as Rin at any of this, in any way, but I just... remember that I felt how you do, because I’d tried one style and wasn’t good at it at all. I was actually about 21-22 before I showed much aptitude for any kind of drawing.
If you don’t find anything that clicks for you in art, I hope you find something you feel as passionate about, or more, and that it can brighten your life when you do it. Be half as nice to yourself about learning as you would be to other people, and it’ll make the process a whole lot easier. 😅 Good luck!
