And small work boots and moccasins as trinkets to sell people display them,also liked carving small shotguns and rifles. Out of ceder or red wood. . people seem to like that too,, I love these burl look on this. Some nice stain would bring it out I think. Very well done. Good job,,
Electric angle grinders are wonderful inventions and not illegal, yet. Also, near Mariposa, CA they are selling shillelaghs made of chamise burl stumps that went through a 2017 wildfire. The burl balls and stems are so fire-hardened they'll break rocks.
Need to let it cure out for about a year. It will check badly as it dries. And when it's dry it will be easier to work with. You wouldn't have all that feathering when filling and sanding.
@@J3urkasaur I always just drip candle wax over the cut ends and it has always worked for me , never tried anything else . If you try to dry it to fast even with the wax it will still try and check , slow well vented area and the wax for me , I'm sure dipping in paint or something else will work , epoxy may be hard to get off in areas that could be use able .
Shawn Dean good tip. I’ve been using a clear stain to seal the ends and it’s worked for me so far. I’ve seen a video of a very experienced carver who immediately coats in epoxy to prevent cracking as the piece dries, after he has carved it green. I think in an ideal world you should dry it slow, but I think it’s less consequential than people make it out to be, assuming you seal it up before cracking occurs.
@@J3urkasaur moisture under a coating , mainly clear could cause hazing and discoloration as the epoxy heats as it cures , and possibly delamination of the coating later on . Built a coffee table once that I finished with just urethane but the wood still had to much moisture in it and as it sat in the living room 5 or 6 feet from the fire place , well let's just say it blew apart and from then on I'm sure with everything of wood I build it's cured properly , scared shit out of my Ole lady in the middle of the night .

Do you let the elements naturally color the shaft? Did you carve the stick wet or dry? Once again beautiful work. People don’t realize the skill and work involved.
Try stinging nettles on the affected area of your arthritis .I had it in my right shoulder and I read about stinging nettles and stung my shoulder each day for 5 days that was 15 months ago haven't had any pain in shoulder since .Best wishes from Ireland 🇮🇪

I am by no means an expert but this stick might have just been cut for all I know, it still had a patch of green moss on it before shaping began. What is it? Cypress? You know. What that stuff is used for? Mulch. And not much else. I don't expect this to be for fighting but if it does not split open you did a good job nonetheless.
the parts on the head look like eyes and a nose. that would've made an excellent face. good job. go to your local hardware store and get a chair stopper for the tip. that's what I use on mine.

I have found stripping the bark from green wood causes it to season too quickly and it often splits and cracks.
Any time you work green wood, keep it waxed right after you quit working on it even for the day.

You might find a bow sander of some use. Excellent at sanding curved surfaces. Easy to make as well.

Can't checking be prevented by sealing with an epoxy or polyurethane? Granted it will greatly slow the curing process.

I used a light stain to treat the wood, and i carved the stick fairly wet as it was a juniper

Very Good Effort! But I would have used a Reciprocating Sawsall instead of the Hand Saw and I would have put on a Paracord Handle.

It looks to me that you are working this stick before it is dry. Won’t it split as its dries?

@Inthe Woods you can steam the handle and bend if seasoned, but probably better to get close while green
I think if he sealed it somehow it could prevent checking, though it would slow the seasoning process substantially
