  • My favorite ever trip to the Goshen! The tail end of my record setting 96 trains in 24 hours comes to a close in spectacular fashion. I'm not typically a nut for older and foriegn power like most people, but this was fun to see. This line is packed with trains! and NS seemingly needs all the power they can get their hands on. NS has never put on a better show. High speeds, constant action, lots of extra trains and extra power, and beautiful weather to boot.
The first shot I catch the Marion - Elkhart 311 heading up the middle of 9th st. at 10mph and onto the big curve where it meets the Chicago line. I knew the EB van trains were due so I set up this shot in hope of catching a meet. Sure enough, only minutes later 24M with pigs for Pittsburgh and Baltimore flies east at 60mph. Right as 24M clears westbound CP train 35T rolls by with CSX power and nearly 3 trains at once.
365 from Ft. Wayne isn't far behind 311. It meets a 23N with 87 stacks from Columbus that is accelerating from a stop. 365 was held up just blocks away from me for hotshot 20E that came through only minutes after it cleared. Again, almost 3 trains at once.
At CP 412 about a mile west of the previous location, an 18M for Linwood, NC heads east with BNSF, leased power, and an ex-Conrail leader with 120 cars.
Minutes after 18M clears a late running 13Q from Bellevue rolls west with 95 cars and a lone UP leader.
Extra CP ethanol train W2T is next with an interesting mix of power led by good ole Soo. Is that an ex MARC unit in the 4th position?
The new CP train 34T heads east with 69 empty autos. This train used to be the X500 that ran on CSX's Grand Rapids sub through Michigan. Just recently this train switched to the Chicago line, leaving the GR sub with no more CP. But a busier Goshen line :D
Usually 68Q has a pair of big NS units on the point. Not this day! They caught me off guard and I could only film them in the shadows. Oh well. Not the end of the world. They were fun to see in throttle at speed.
My last shot is of hotshot 21Z flying around 144 thats heading off the branch. Construction crews working in the area kept leaving dirt on the crossing here and it creates this neat hurricane effect. It sure wasn't easy on the eyes!
This was all shot on Friday 10-22-10. Seriously, I've been around the country, and Goshen puts on one of the greatest railroading shows in the U.S. I've lived in Wisconsin for almost all my life, but was born in Goshen. Interesting that my birth place has turned into my favorite railfanning spot in the country.
    Hope you all enjoy,
    Ty

This is just amazing, and illustrates the greatly increased demand for rail freight -- looks like a new golden age of railroading is upon us.

The one you thought may be a MARC unit is actually the former Alstom demonstrator, now just another CITX leaser.

Wow. That was incredible. My favorite was the candy apple SOO leader, but the pure SD40-2 consist was pretty sweet too. All of those catches were great though. I can't believe that you caught 96 trains in 24 hours! By the way, the engine that you said was a Marc is actually owned by a company called Alstom I believe. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
