Botswana Ends 7 Year Hunting Ban, Elephant at 30yds | Mark V Peterson Hunting

- All hunting was banned in Botswana from 2014-2020. After 7 years, the restrictions were lifted and Mark Peterson is among the first to be there and hunt an Elephant. This hunt took place in April of 2021 and is a true conservation success story about the Botswana elephant populations and the local economies that have suffered as a result of the hunting ban, until now. This is a true field to table experience in a country where people depend on hunting and there's more to it than you think. This is the truth about hunting in Botswana.

Having seen the damage in Botswana at the SA border, I can say the management of these animals is 100% needed.
Awesome trophy, and the locals certainly appreciated your support. Well done Sir.
I would never do this. But to see how happy the trackers was, knowing how much meat they would get to eat and share with their families, did put a smile on my face.
Thanks for watching and the comment.
A lot of people don’t really know what is hunting, it could save life’s and feed others in need I love this channel because they really go deep and detail why we hunt .. ❤
Yea. Nice try. Elephant hunting is for sport. Nothing else.
@@broflo3875 r u sure about that?
@@broflo3875 If it was only for sport for foreigners, why would Botswana allow it? The motivation of the hunter is irrelevant aside from the fact if he got nothing from it the hunt wouldn't be done. The primary reason this hunt was done was because elephant numbers had been increasing beyond safe carrying capacity during the ban and local people were having crops destroyed and sometimes were killed by marauding animals. Jobs, meat, taxes and sometimes revenue sharing are other benefits to the people, community and country. I don't hunt but understand why it is needed. Their country, their decision. Our opinion doesn't and shouldn't count. I wrote that before I watched all the video. The meat distribution near the end and the words of the local guy starting around 19:00 are worth catching. They are the most important players here, to me.
There are game reserve "you small head"
@@felixota1889 I presume you are claiming this is in a game reserve? If so you are incorrect. CH1 at 17:10 stands for Controlled Hunting Area 1. It is managed by the Chobe Enclave Conservation Trust and we don't have any say in matters pertaining to their management.

Bushmeat to the locals, big money for conservation, old elephant removed from the herd to produce a more robust and healthy herd. well done M8!
Exactly ! 🔥
If elephants didn't have tusks, you wouldn't be hooting them. So bollocks to robust any healthy herd, that's so lame.
What you're saying is, if you get old, it's OK to be shot. Then get your younger buddy's to shoot you when you get old.

Did you keep the head as a trophy?

Beautiful country and people! I spent a summer there in ‘08. When the people started singing “Dumela”, I had this flood of emotions rush in! Thanks for sharing the adventure.
👍👍👍
This doesn’t do anything for me personally, like I would never do it. But to see the excitement of the locals, and knowing a lot of money went to conservation, the meat fed the locals, and the herd gets an old potentially aggressive bull out of it.
Perfectly fine that you would never do it - I think it’s great that even though it’s not up your alley, that you still understand the importance for the herd management and for the locals in general. Thanks for your comment.
I thought it would take RPG to kill it not couple of bullet
Good for this country economy bcz there are up to 100k elephants .. population growth record level
Awesome everything for the good old bull elefant out of the heard food for the village money for medical care and education well done
Elephants are so resilient, even with double rifles! But won’t bullets ruin the meat?
They are and bullets will ruin a very small amount of meat. Great question.

So the people have food to eat
As long as you eat what you shoot it's OK. But the trophy animals must be past breeding age. Oh. They do do that.
I am just so impressed with the success of the hunting /Conservation actions in Africa.
Unlike the electricity supply and corrupt governments next door in south Africa
Why is it that the locals aren't allowed to hunt for themselves? That's something I've never understood about Africa.
Its money thing. Hunting big game in Africa comes with a hefty price tag and trophy fees. The locals simply can't afford it...
@@stevet5785 I know it expensive to hunt in Africa and I figured that's probably why they don't want the locals hunting for themselves. The guide and outfitters association of BC has tried to do sort of the same thing here in BC. They've tried to back door new legislation that would restrict a resident hunters ability to hunt.
@@jimdavis3273 I honestly find it pretty reprehensible. I am by no means a socialist but I definately do not think its right to deny locals a chance to hunt and to make hunting all about $$$. Wildlife is a common heritage resource- one that is for everyone to enjoy. Not just for a small minority of rich
Very good question, and from what I saw, this is the best that I can answer. In Botswana, people can now hunt for subsistence (they could not during the hunting ban from 2014-2020). However, when talking about the people of these remote villages, the challenge is acquiring a rifle. They can't just go to a Cabela's and buy one. Yes, the hunts cost money to out of country hunters and the villages see some of that money, but with so many hunters to contribute wild game anyway, why spend it on hunting rifles. Second, when an "outfitter" acquires a concession, they have a contract with the Botswana government that a percentage of the meat is to be distributed among the villages inside their concession boundary. In this case, there were 6 villages in the concession and we were required by law to distribute 80% of the meat. Hope this helps, and thank you for the question.
They can’t own a gun or afford one ..
really good to see you being respectful to the elephant. gives hunting a good name
Thanks Charlie, we owe it to the animal. Thanks for watching.
Respectful?? I did NOT see the Elephant have much of a chance vs 6 men & 3 rifles. how would you feel if you were the one being hunted ??

Is there another way to conserve elephant without hunting
There is currently a surplus on a private reserve in South Africa and the land owners have offered them up free to whoever is willing to relocate and is qualified to care for them. They contacted clebrities who claimed to be concerned directly but anyone could apply. So far no takers. So hunters will likely be shooting them starting in May. Could some stay at your house?

Why hunt elephant...???
Meat!!!
I totally understand and support the economic benefit of bringing foreign dollars to the local economy and ecosystem through hunting tourism. My question is (and this is a sincere question): why are the locals waiting 7 years for the Americans to shoot the elephant in order to eat. Considering the abundance of meat in the overrunning of the area by elephants, why aren’t there local efforts to procure meat for the starving population by the local government? Doesn’t make sense to me. I’m seriously not trying to sound negative, just trying to understand the dynamic.
That’s a great question. I am not sure why the local government isn’t helping the people to procure their own meat. I wish I would have asked those questions.
Botswana is a poor nation, but not a starving one. More important to the local community is not the meat, but the steady income from jobs in this industry.
375 Ruger plastic push feed with a muzzle break. Now that's funny.
That’s a very good message at the ending. People should start going to the front lines and see for themselves rather than read something off the internet.
Thanks for the comment.
Cool how you feed the village. If they could get the poachers, it would allow more hunting. They need a helicopter with infra red, and just kill the poachers.
How many elephants are killed each year in Africa?
From over 100 seizures made in the continent in the last 15 years, almost 465,000 pounds of ivory were recovered. That translates into the deaths of over 30,000 elephants. But this hasn't dampened the illegal trade in ivory. Tens of thousands of elephants are lost every year; one killed every 15 minutes.
Useless ban resulting in stealin of African wealth I reckon-centuries old fraudulent scheme by the rich nations. Ivory should be traded in the open market just like resources in rich nations…it’s high time we have a world system that rewards good instead of evil!
What you see here in Botswana is 1/4 of the worlds elephant population. Let that sink in. And there’s not “hundreds of thousands of elephants” left in Botswana, there’s only 130k.
But wasn't it illegal to hunt elephants? Or this hunt is inside the rules
This hunt is completely legal in Botswana.
@@MarkVPeterson ah só in Botswana hunt elephant is legal

Wankers.
As natives of Botswana we are not allowed to hunt and it pisses me off because foreigners just come and kill our animals as they please.
If you go to this areas where there's a lot of animals you will find out that most of the lodges, camp sites, hotels and game reserves or parks are controlled by the foreigners.
Our country Botswana is in the hands of the rich..we ordinary folks aren't even allowed to own a rifle,,they say you should apply for a firearm permit after that a classic yes or no raffle decides whether you get the permit or not
Am an African and it also pisses me off these people are coming all the way from America /Europe just to kill our Animals in the name controlling/hunting,They killed their animals to extinction now they are turning to Africa, its a shame that our corrupt leaders are the ones responsible for this, this must stop 😠
Every one needs a permit mate. Not just you
This is bs especially when local villagers can't hunt feed themselves? Here comes the great white hunter to the rescue who is permitted to hunt elephants in Botswana. Local tribesmen have been doing this for centuries but they are denied a firearm permit. It's about big game and big money and the government's mismanagement and corruption within Botswana.

A lot of theese poor Africans don't look like they are missing to many meals!
They eat a lot of corn. Lots of carbs not much protein.
Great that elephant hunting has returned to Botswana, they need to harvest them as great as they are. Good to hear the locals say it the way it is and hopefully the “greenies” listen to the reality! No disrespect - merely a comment - my father law was an African outfitter for 50 years and I remember how they never took an elephant less than 80lbs a side. Now we need to breed back those genes and get some 100lbs roaming the Savannah. The behemoths that Selby, Selous and Ruark hunted.
I can only image the caliber of animals at that time. From what I saw, this place has the potential to produce them again and there is no mistaking the age of elephants once they reach that stage.
That requires more habitat. Got to find a way for humans to use less surface area.
@@MarkVPeterson. Great video Mark. But I have one question. Does trophy hunting reduce the number of elephants in Botswana??
Good on you for getting the true message out!😎
Thanks, people need to hear it.
All the naysayers in the USA should have to watch this video. It explains elephant hunting as necessary for the good of the people that live in Africa, as well as controlling herd size so the locals are not overrun with them. Nothing goes to waste when they harvest an elephant and a lot of people get protein they otherwise would not have. When it comes down to it, people are more important than elephants, not the other way around as people against hunting would want you to believe. Hats off to everyone involved as this video explains it very clearly.
