Joyce Bryant - Love For Sale

  • 50's cabaret and nightclub sensation, Joyce Bryant, also known as the "Bronze Blonde Bombshell". Miss Bryant left the stage at the height of her career because she was unable to reconcile her hyper-sexual image with her Christian faith. 'Love For Sale' was banned from the radio because it was thought too provocative by censors. Bryant was under consideration for the lead role in the musical 'Carmen Jones' which ultimately went to Dorothy Dandridge.

I had never heard of this talented woman before today. So many legends have not gotten their recognition. The fact that she had reached such heights during those overtly painful years, and then gave it up for a higher purpose, makes her story all the more special.

There is no comparison between Joyce Bryant and Dorothy Dandridge. I think they were both very gifted artists. Joyce Bryant, however, was a singer. I can find no acting credits for her at all. In a one-hour interview, on the David Susskind Show taped in 1983 she speaks of her singing career from her childhood to the present. She never mentions pursuing an acting career, auditioning for the role of Carmen, or any other acting role. The same is true of her interview in Donald Bogle's Documentary "Brown Sugar" Again she speaks of her singing career, never mentions pursuing an acting career. Dorothy Dandridge was in show business most of her life, singing dancing, and acting. She was very serious about her acting career, at a time when there were very few roles for African Americans. She studied her craft at the Actor's Lab in LA. along with Anthony Quinn, and other actors, which allowed her to do roles in the lab, not available to her on-screen. "Carmen Jones" was produced and directed by Otto Preminger. By this time Miss Dandrige did have two starring roles to her credit " "The Harlem Globetrotters and Bright Road ". The story of how she won the role of Carmen has become part of Hollywood History. She wanted the role and arranged a meeting with Preminger through her agent. At the meeting, Preminger didn't see Miss Dandridge as Carmen at all but felt she might be right for the role of the sweet little Cindy Lou. She only wanted the role of Carmen. He gave her a few lines to read. She wouldn't read them then, but said she would return, and read them. She came back looking like Carmen. Supposedly he looked at her and said "It's Carmen !" From there she did a screen test and got the role. She became the first African American actor nominated for an Oscar in a leading role category. They didn't want her for the role. There was no "They" It was just one person Otto Preminger, who Initially never considered her for the role, and Initially didn't think she was right for the role. She won the role, through the audition process. The better singer had nothing to do with it. Miss Dandrige's singing was dubbed by Soprano Marilyn Horn. Miss Dandrige's complexion was not darn near white. Fredi Washington's completion was darn near white. Hilda Simms's complexion was darn near white Ellen Holly's[, noted as the first African American to appear on daytime television] complexion is darn near white. Isabel Cooley's completion was darn near white. As for African American actresses with darker complexions, I had the extreme pleasure of seeing Cicely Tyson on Broadway in her Tony Award-winning performance in the play "The Trip to Bountiful ". She was the 1st A.A. actress cast as a T.V. series regular and wear her hair naturally [Before the term Afro became vogue, East Side/West Side 1963-1964]. There was Judy Pace and Brenda Sykes. Today there is Kiki Layne, Jodie Turner-Smith [Actually British], Oscar Winner, Lupita Nyong'o [Nigerian] to name a few. I have always been thrilled to see A. A. Actors and Actresses on stage and screen I've never given any thought to their complexion. Don't understand why it was mentioned in the 1st place.

The white composer Cole Porter wrote the song in 1930 and it was banned, so it wasn't about color. The song was about a prostitute, and songs about prostitutes, especially ones that have a positive attitude about prostitution, were not looked at favorably at that time. See this for more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_for_Sale_(song).

What does she have to do with Marilyn Monroe? She is Joyce Bryant period. They looked nothing alike, and Marilyn Monroe did not have Miss Bryant's singing abilities.[ She was an actress, not a singer.] She should not have been know as "Bronze Blonde Bombshell". either. She should be known as Joyce Bryant. No white singer has ever been referred to as "The White Billie Holiday, Or Ella Fitzgerald, or Sarah Vaughan. No white actress has ever been referred to as " The White Dorothy Dandridge. Billy Eckstein was referred to as the Sepia Sinatra. They looked and sounded nothing alike. Mr. Eckstein was bass-baritone, closer to an operatic voice.

@@wpickard9307 This is true. She was often featured in both magazines and very glamorous, beautiful, and talented, in my opinion. I hold a plethora of Accolades and admiration for her. She turned 93 last October. I also think highly of Baby Washington. Of course, she is 13 years younger than Miss Bryant and her Genre of music was different. Miss Washington was more rhythm and blues. I admire both artists.
