- 50's cabaret and nightclub sensation, Joyce Bryant, also known as the "Bronze Blonde Bombshell". Miss Bryant left the stage at the height of her career because she was unable to reconcile her hyper-sexual image with her Christian faith. 'Love For Sale' was banned from the radio because it was thought too provocative by censors. Bryant was under consideration for the lead role in the musical 'Carmen Jones' which ultimately went to Dorothy Dandridge.
Once again, I am just this minute learning about another talented black woman who has been left out the musical history of this country. Shame, shame, shame...she was so beautiful.
I agree with you. I've just discovered her. Wow!! She had a beautiful voice. She came before her time. I'm so sorry for the disappointments with the music business. It's a doggy dog business.
Me too, but I’m also enjoying yet another great person of color 👨🏽🦲👍🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
She could pass for an Afro-Latina woman since so many look exactly like her and she's extremely gorgeous too
I just found out about her a day or two ago. I really should've know about this wonderfully talented beautiful lady sooner.
Ms. Bryant had a 5 octave range and in her later years, sang opera. She's in her 90s. What a blessing!
I had never heard of this talented woman before today. So many legends have not gotten their recognition. The fact that she had reached such heights during those overtly painful years, and then gave it up for a higher purpose, makes her story all the more special.
+npsmooth I agree. There is a documentary being made about her life called "The Lost Diva." She's amazing. I thank God for the internet and finding her by accident and loving every note she sings.
Joyce Bryantle Era
when will it be in theatres?
I agree with you. I've just discovered her. Wow!! She had a beautiful voice. She came before her time. I'm so sorry for the disappointments with the music business. It's a doggy dog business. But I'm glad she came back to the industry to coach singers, also she did sing opera when she returned.
She vocally trained Phyllis Hyman and Jennifer Holiday!!! Both two powerhouses and now we see where they got it from :)
Oh wow 😮
Wow never knew that thanks ..any books on her ?
Thank you for that info, appreciated!
She died last week at age 95. I had never heard of her before that announcement. I’ve started listening to her music. So talented, so beautiful!
I don't like that they call her the black Marilyn Monroe. That's so disrespectful.
I feel the same way, why didn't they call Marilyn Monroe the White Joyce Brown?
+w3mq exactly since she's obviously older than Marilyn. They always taking something from us. Same thing happened with Betty Boo too.
+Gary2837 Betty Boop was inspired by a jazz singer named Baby Esther.
+Gary2837 Betty Boop was inspired by a jazz singer named Baby Esther.
Marilyn Monroe should have been called Joyce Bryant. B never comes before A. And she was A one, THE ONE!
BEFORE Beyonce',Janet Jackson,Halle Berry...and others....it was this TRAIL-BLAZER who spray-painted her hair with silver paint to be distinquished from the REST! What an ICON! Love her!!!!
I wish that her performances were documented on film.
I just heard about this woman a few minutes ago (literally) and wanted to check her out. She was very good.
I did too i saw her on Pinterest
This was an amazing rendition. Her vocals were captivating. She drew me into the story that she was telling with the way she manipulated her vocals to convey different emotions.
Joyce Bryant was a singer who could handle many types of music. I've heard her singing the
Soprano solo in Oratorios. She was such a great singer! I think she is now a minister.
Bernard Mavritte I've been looking for some of her classically-oriented work! Lucky...
nevet a ministet
Just discovered her from Tik tok absolutely beautiful song bird I will share and play for my children and grands
JOYCE'S VOICE SOUNDS SO BEAUTIFUL! JOYCE WAS SO BEAUTIFUL!
Anthony West “is”. She’s still alive.
Yes she is beautiful. Even in her 90’s she looks good! Her granddaughter has an IG for her and shares more recent videos and pictures of her.
Very beautiful woman and a great talent. I looked her up on Google. She's 95 yrs now. Good for her.
Love how she saw another iconic presented on stage before her ..and decided to do something drastically on point with her hair to be different
Very dramatic voice. RIP Joyce. All us young ones are talking about you and your beautiful voice. Delia Morris
I love it. Dorothy Dandridge is her own person like Joyce Bryant is. I love her look and her amazing voice. I wish there was more about her. If only to be alive during the Harlem Renaissance and witness the marvelous things that black people accomplished!
IMHO, Joyce Bryant's voice is SO much better than Dorothy Dandridge's. Her range alone. I've seen Carmen Jones enough times to know, that back then, just like today, they want Black leading ladies to be light, bright and darn near White.
4Is2See DD was a very good actress and brown skinned.
No need to bash one to build the other. They were both fabulous :-)
4Is2See original they wanted Joyce for that part. Joyce had a really bright future in front of her. They wanted her on shows, in movies, she was gem 💎 and everybody wanted a piece
Right. They are both incredible. No need for comparisons
💯
There is no comparison between Joyce Bryant and Dorothy Dandridge. I think they were both very gifted artists. Joyce Bryant, however, was a singer. I can find no acting credits for her at all. In a one-hour interview, on the David Susskind Show taped in 1983 she speaks of her singing career from her childhood to the present. She never mentions pursuing an acting career, auditioning for the role of Carmen, or any other acting role. The same is true of her interview in Donald Bogle's Documentary "Brown Sugar" Again she speaks of her singing career, never mentions pursuing an acting career. Dorothy Dandridge was in show business most of her life, singing dancing, and acting. She was very serious about her acting career, at a time when there were very few roles for African Americans. She studied her craft at the Actor's Lab in LA. along with Anthony Quinn, and other actors, which allowed her to do roles in the lab, not available to her on-screen. "Carmen Jones" was produced and directed by Otto Preminger. By this time Miss Dandrige did have two starring roles to her credit " "The Harlem Globetrotters and Bright Road ". The story of how she won the role of Carmen has become part of Hollywood History. She wanted the role and arranged a meeting with Preminger through her agent. At the meeting, Preminger didn't see Miss Dandridge as Carmen at all but felt she might be right for the role of the sweet little Cindy Lou. She only wanted the role of Carmen. He gave her a few lines to read. She wouldn't read them then, but said she would return, and read them. She came back looking like Carmen. Supposedly he looked at her and said "It's Carmen !" From there she did a screen test and got the role. She became the first African American actor nominated for an Oscar in a leading role category. They didn't want her for the role. There was no "They" It was just one person Otto Preminger, who Initially never considered her for the role, and Initially didn't think she was right for the role. She won the role, through the audition process. The better singer had nothing to do with it. Miss Dandrige's singing was dubbed by Soprano Marilyn Horn. Miss Dandrige's complexion was not darn near white. Fredi Washington's completion was darn near white. Hilda Simms's complexion was darn near white Ellen Holly's[, noted as the first African American to appear on daytime television] complexion is darn near white. Isabel Cooley's completion was darn near white. As for African American actresses with darker complexions, I had the extreme pleasure of seeing Cicely Tyson on Broadway in her Tony Award-winning performance in the play "The Trip to Bountiful ". She was the 1st A.A. actress cast as a T.V. series regular and wear her hair naturally [Before the term Afro became vogue, East Side/West Side 1963-1964]. There was Judy Pace and Brenda Sykes. Today there is Kiki Layne, Jodie Turner-Smith [Actually British], Oscar Winner, Lupita Nyong'o [Nigerian] to name a few. I have always been thrilled to see A. A. Actors and Actresses on stage and screen I've never given any thought to their complexion. Don't understand why it was mentioned in the 1st place.
Wow!! I wish she would have made a film. She's great!!
i'm glad someone else has heard this version of love for sale besides me!
i love it and i love the clip of images!
I have heard other renditions but this is the best
Marilyn Monroe was the white Joyce Bryant and that’s the tea ☕️
Yasipoo that is sis
You darn tooten. Ms. Bryant was the Bronze Bombshell.
Made me think of Ashley says so 😂 The scandal ..if you know
Who she is 😊
Her voice is captivating.
Wow she sung sooooo beautifully ✨
Can't wait for the documentary ♡
Wow her voice is something else! She was so gorgeous as well:)
She is so beautiful with a strong voice
Wow never heard of her until today SMH she was beautiful.
Wow! I was crazy about Dorothy Dandridge, but Ms Joyce is slowly taking me away lol
Agreed. Marilyn didn't even have a tenth of her talent.
She is singing you can feel the passion 🔥
I was watching the 1946 film, "Mr. Ace," starring Sylvia Sidney & George Raft when they went to a nightclub, where Joyce Bryant introduced "Now and Then" by Fred Finklehoffe & Sid Silvers, (who had a role in the film) which introduced her to me by her beautiful voice.
Thank you for this. I had stated that I could find no film credits for her at all. I just watched the movie {actually zipped through it] on CZcams. Of course, the camera is focused on the stars of the movie, Sylvia Sidney & George Raft, and their dialogue, for most of the song. We see Miss Bryant very briefly, but she does get a screen credit as Joyce Bryant and the Flennoy Trio.
Wow! I just got turned onto Joyce Bryant today from a buddy on Facebook. She's amazing.
Oh Em Friggin Gee that voice! OMG!
I've just discovered her. Wow!! She had a beautiful voice. She came before her time. I'm so sorry for the disappointments with the music business. It's a doggy dog business.
Wow, she could really sing. This song was banned in Boston back in the 50s for being too sexual, lol. I wonder if she were white, would that have been an issue.
Christmas was banned in Boston too i wonder what's with Boston
The white composer Cole Porter wrote the song in 1930 and it was banned, so it wasn't about color. The song was about a prostitute, and songs about prostitutes, especially ones that have a positive attitude about prostitution, were not looked at favorably at that time. See this for more: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Love_for_Sale_(song).

R.I.P. Joyce Bryant
Joyce Bryant was unique. She doesn't remindof Dorothy Dandridge at all. Both were great ladies, but different in appearance and style.
beautiful woman, beautiful voice!
What a fantastic voice
Rest in Paradise To The Blonde Bombshell,Joyce Bryant!!!
How could one think this song is too sexual? She's not saying to pay for sex. She's wanting someone to show how much she's worth. They took this too literal. I have a Marilyn Monroe framed pic I found for cheap that I'm going to replace for Joyce to be in.
Yes. There is a book by Donald Bogle, "Brown Sugar", that has a short chapter on Joyce Bryant.
I'm in love with this
Roland Hamid
I'm not.....that vibrato is killin' me. Beautiful woman, though.
+Roland Hamid I'm in love with her voice and her spirit. I'm so glad I found her on the internet. I'm a total fan of Joyce Bryant
Cydney Davis she has a golden voice

awesome voice
She's gorgeous
Hypnotic, alluring and haunting music. Miss Joyce's voice makes me want to hear more. I'll be sharing this. Another one for women of colour.
Such regal beauty!!
fine upload but too many photo changes take away from the effect-
Looking at her pictures, I didnt see a great beauty, I saw a slim very young Brownskinned woman with peculiar sprayed on Silver colored hair...but when I heard the voice she had I was floored! Her voice paired with her appearance made her a mystical mermaid, a forbidden magical siren.
Her voice was true Platinum. She was an operatic, jazz, Goddess!
We lost her this year. November 20, 2022
The Bronze Bombshell. Spectacular voice, Incredible body, Phenomenal pave wayer❤
Such a beauty-full voice.
The sexiest voice I've ever heard!
Wow!....u go girl!..
she stopped cause she found faith (religion).
Wow! New fan here!💜💕🦋
For every Nubian American you heard about there are many you didn't who were extremely talented. The media made sure they got as little exposure as possible.
RIP November 20, 2022
Gratitude
This was one beautiful woman!
TechnologyFalcon I think shes still alive 86 and lives in Oakland, California. Yes she looked classy.
U can hear how she influenced a LOT of older white artists who I'm sure probably never mentioned her. I mean Patsy Cline has her entire vocal stylings & was always praised for her voice & style. If I didn't know any better I'd think this WAS Patsy she copied it so much
What a brilliant lady. Im glad that she left the entertainment industry due to the many sad endings in Hollywood.
WOW!!!

😎
Wow....
Ladies some people don't know how to pay a compliment when it comes to people of color. Don't forget the Times.
perfect♥
🎵🎶🎵♥️
Is she still living?
Yes.
Love
They copied her style like the original Betty Boop,da sisters did it first, denied they're beauty and sex appeal,to play mammi degrading roles...no Black sex symbols allowed 🤐
sultry
Every black artist has to be named after a white person even though we're the originators of most if not ALL American music... SMDH
What does she have to do with Marilyn Monroe? She is Joyce Bryant period. They looked nothing alike, and Marilyn Monroe did not have Miss Bryant's singing abilities.[ She was an actress, not a singer.] She should not have been know as "Bronze Blonde Bombshell". either. She should be known as Joyce Bryant. No white singer has ever been referred to as "The White Billie Holiday, Or Ella Fitzgerald, or Sarah Vaughan. No white actress has ever been referred to as " The White Dorothy Dandridge. Billy Eckstein was referred to as the Sepia Sinatra. They looked and sounded nothing alike. Mr. Eckstein was bass-baritone, closer to an operatic voice.
@@wpickard9307 This is true. She was often featured in both magazines and very glamorous, beautiful, and talented, in my opinion. I hold a plethora of Accolades and admiration for her. She turned 93 last October. I also think highly of Baby Washington. Of course, she is 13 years younger than Miss Bryant and her Genre of music was different. Miss Washington was more rhythm and blues. I admire both artists.
